The new maps on Metvuw show the next depression running straight over the North Island next Tuesday/Wednesday. Lots of rain and a barometric pressure of only 984. I can't see the point in heading out into that.
With the forecasted rain and wind it wasn't worth us staying out with young kids onboard! So we have just made the trip back from Te Kouma to Gulf Harbour in 3 hours 40 minutes, was pretty wild out there but thankfully we were going with the wind! Top speed of 14knots and average of almost 9knots, boat felt like a heavy tug boat as we were provisioned for another 10days on the water.
We may head out again for a few days if this weather clears up!
To get really good AP responses, really you want a 10hz heading, preferred corrected for roll, pitch and yaw. Nmea0183 can't do that, it's not fast enough. However, that is a good converter. For best results, use the minimum number of nmea 0183 sentences possible to control the pilot.
Looking at Metvuw, I don't know why you would bother heading away on Wednesday. Only a small window then the next system arrives and it's a real humdinger.
