  1. Yeah, I saw that too. It is reminiscent of most of my interactions with the council on various submissions I have made. Like the articles yesterday about Auckland Rate increases and Goff still running the 2.5% line. When people heard that during the elections I don't think individuals realise they are talking on average. Plus the areas most likely impacted in a relative sense with the fuel tax also got the largest rate increases. So in general I would not trust much that any of them say.
  2. Damn, I never thought of using a socket!!!!
  3. Worst one I have done relates to an awkwardly located pipe clamp that I needed to detach and replace. I determined that if I slipped with the screwdriver there was a high probability I would stab myself. Thought about grabbing some vicegrips, but I was semi-wedged in. Proceeded without vice grips, making sure I had my other hand clear. Subconsciously moved the free hand in to help, slipped the screwdriver and stabbed myself between my thumb and first finger to the bone at the bottom of my thumb. Dragged myself out onto the deck and lay down as I was about to pass-out. Had an operation a
  4. Quite cool, but pretty limited usability for a normal person. I see the ad says it has lifting points and mentions putting on a super yacht. Seems a more likely home unless you are collector or have many $$$.
  5. Come on I hate waiting, whats the big news? Its going to be free, we are all being kicked out, our boats are not allowed to touch the water, they are going to build a shopping centre over the top with a 100m air gap
  6. They are a CCO. They have a Board. The Board makes the decisions, but they work "closely" with Auckland Council to deliver the Auckland Plan.
  7. You are exactly right it is about market definition. The argument I would make is that it is not just one market, "mooring boats", but multiple markets that are subject to quite restrictive geographical and commercial barriers. For example, we have trailer boats, boats that can fit on a drystack, boats that cant fit on a drystack etc. Then we have swing moorings, pole moorings and marinas. Added to this is that a marina in Tauranga is not a substitute for a marina in Auckland if you are Auckland based. So the geographic area of the market could be defined as say travel in a car within 30
  8. Island time, they look like excellent prices. Dont have kid (I have a young adult ). When we next need some I will be heading there.
  9. It is not cheap and it always pays to ask around
  10. Okay I know most of you do it yourself or say to do it yourself, but I have other priorities. So the boat is up for a new coating etc. I am based in Westhaven. The last lot was well done and I have only compliments for them (I wont say who though) and already have a quote from them to do it again. Looking for recommendations in the Auckland area. Its 40ft. Many thanks.
  11. We should all make representations to the Commerce Commission. At the moment I suspect that he is okay. I do wonder about the marina operator's meetings that we hear about. I work in an industry where we have an industry association and I am on its Board. We have an independent Chair and prior to each meeting reaffirm our understanding of and compliance with the Commerce Act. If necessary we have a partner from a law firm sit in. It is amazing how many people I come across who have no understanding of their legal obligations with respect to competition laws in NZ.
  12. The documents for the marina extension can be found here: https://www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/have-your-say/have-your-say-notified-resource-consent/notified-resource-consent-applications-open-submissions/Pages/ResourceConsentApplication.aspx?itemId=204&applNum=BUN60318129 Or try here and follow the link: http://www.westhaven.co.nz/westhaven/the-forum/the-westhaven-plan/pile-mooring-redevelopment/ I hope that worked!
  13. You talking about the cost of the boat or the marina. They are both holes in the water that you throw money at. I agree that the constant cranking up of costs is OTT. People are astounded when I tell them what it costs just to park. That is why trailer boats are so popular (power boats) free parking on your property or the council curb. Rich pricks must pay, so they say.
  14. massive job for Vector, big respect for the teams that will be working their arses off to get the power back on day and night. I think his will be their largest outage ever .
  15. Just went down to Westhaven, horizontal spray under the bridge, tree debris everywhere, power out. West Auckland is black. Power boat around the corner is is now parked perpendicular to the road!
  16. Was just checking the rules and noticed I did a quick bit of illegal grinding recently at my berth. Next time I will do it at the loading dock as that is not my berth
  17. For me the pricing is the biggest issue. I'm in a 12m fortunately I rent privately so I don't pay the outrageous Westhaven price. I am definitely paying for convenience as we were at Bayswater but could not handle the commute. If I ever (I guess it just when it happens) have to pay the marina posted price that will be it for me. I will have to downsize or sell my wife
  18. Wish I was requested to fill in a survey, I only pay to keep my boat there........... If they are going to live up to the green marina status will they clean all the water nasties off the docks that we are not allowed on our boat hulls

    Dogs

We pick our dogs crap up on the Westhaven piers. Don't often see much around from others. We pick the crap up more regularly than the pile moorings people take the trolleys back! (rant drift)
  20. interesting comment about the Barrier. we were holed up out here for the big blow. No drifting launches where we were. Two cats that had problems anchoring and drifting, one late yacht arrival who anchored a bit close to a big Riviera that when the wind shift actually touched them. The Riv was anchored 24 hours before the yacht arrived and tucked itself in! We were in 5m of water with 50m of chain and a massive Excel anchor knotme kindly sold me last year. Stuck so well I was worried it wouldnt come back out!
  21. As I have stated before I am a launch owning ex-yachty who still enjoys sailing. I was at Kawau over the long weekend and I am afraid I saw and provided special hand signals to three launches. One who cut across my bow at almost 20 knots and within about 20m of me and to my starboard side and two others who overtook me in front of the Mansion house at close to 15knots and within 10 to 15 meters. I also witnessed a yacht going through Westhaven at close to its full motoring speed i.e. definitely not 5 knots and creating a wake. As per usual no Westhaven staff/boat to be seen. None of
  22. We have used Canopy and Squab in Westhaven. They maybe who made you fall over, but they do good work and are very fast.

    Fizboats

There are rules, but they are of little value if they are not policed. For example, Westhaven will give you tickets for parking, notices for your electrical connection and tell you about all of the stuff you cant do, but they do not police the 5 knot speed in the marina. Of all the stupid rules they have, the 5 knots, no or minimal wake rule is there for a sound reason. Case in point yesterday a large launch came in at sufficient speed to have it wake break over the end pontoons where the pole mooring dinghies sit. And it is not just launches. We are the last berth on one of the piers and
  24. CCO's and their assets generally can not be sold without the Councils approval. http://governance.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/11-council-controlled-organisations/auckland-council-cos-and-ccos/
  25. I feel sorry for all involved and especially the man's family. As a yacht, speed boat and launch owner (not all at once) I can say that it takes a huge amount of concentration to spot even a kayak on a slightly bumpy day. I always take my hat off to the ferry captains who thread their way on busy days (well many do). We all know how hard it is to spot a dolphin or shark let alone a similar sized human.
