  1. Philstar, that's an awesome vid. really took me there. I just got told off for calling calling out "pole on".
  2. old BBQs that are chucked on the side of the road at inorganic time are a treasure trove of useful hardwood ....
  3. So, I'm going to buy some peelply. Haven't used it before, but figured might as well get some practice. Can get two different weights, 83gsm and 62gsm, price is pretty much the same - slightly more (+5%) for the 62gsm. Will use it in hand layup when strengthening various small pieces, sheathing dagger boards rudders etc. May or may not use vacuum, both glass and carbon. But also will use it when sheathing a 40ft hull, again, may or may not use vacuum. Want to take advantage of combined shipping and just buy a big roll (100m) ... once, also taking advantage of discount for the
  4. Yeah, I think the panels are getting more efficient, but true the efficiency is not great. The advantage I think is that you can use the same panel to deliver two things, flexibility etc. Hot water and electricity.. Need more power? then the space that would otherwise be keeping your hot water cylinder hot goes to your batteries. Batteries full? All that area of your PV now goes into your HWC. The PV is an easier and cheaper install than the solar water, and requires fewer permits etc. (at least for us in Northland).
  5. It was suggested to me that instead of going solar hot water, to just put extra PV panels on the roof and go electric hot water, this might be the future actually, fewer moving parts etc... standard plumbing setup...etc etc
  6. So, our place up the BOI is off the grid, and although we have bugger all draw at this point, we sized the charging etc. for later expansion up to 4.75kW of panels (currently 1.5kW) - which should cut it for a normal energy efficient household. Currently running a small 24v battery bank (4x 6V) that we will upgrade to 48 volts when we expand I have two Victron c 24/1600 inverters. They will work in parallel to deliver 3200 continuously (6kW peak for ~30s). I say will because I let the smoke out of one early on and that's why I've now got two... The original one is being repaired in German
  7. Tracking was globally weird using Chrome. Through Safari it made much more sense... Div 2 rounding Jaco Island off the eastern most tip of Timor I also saw them there....
  8. One father is dead. One mother is a surgeon...
  9. I think it's good to be aware of what constitutes misogyny. Just as it's good to be aware of what constitutes racism. Inadvertent unconscious misogyny (and racism) is alive and well in our and many other societies. Being more aware that some of the phrases we speak habitually every day are derogatory, can only be a good thing. None of us are too old to learn and make ourselves better people. Even things such as the manner in which you refer to your wife when she's not around, can tell others a lot about who you are. Eg. the following sentences: The Wife won't like that. My Wife w
  10. How come I "don't have permission" to view Dambo's images in larger format??
  11. Thanks for your update, Chris, I agree with your concern regarding impounding a vessel that has not officially broken a legal requirement, however I'd be concerned about making a stink in case regulations were suddenly added to provide teeth... Beholden to no one, rules may appear out of thin air...
  12. Interesting, they're pics from google photos. I see them fine. using chrome.
  13. Hired a RIB, Explored the Amalfi Coast... One way to keep the kids happy while cruising... And a sailing vessel... the "Wind Surf"
  14. One point, the drone has a viewing advantage in that its camera looks down through the water. We see, from its perspective, a very different view. How much can the skippers of the boats see? Not defending anyone, but rather judge not lest you find yourselves in this situation.
  15. Reporting's a bit vague, but was he actually lost? Seems like a few people on shore freaked out. Doesn't seem like he gave a concrete plan and those who knew him were concerned. Dunno if that's good or bad...
  16. John, Do you have some photos of that setup?
  17. That's a great idea. It's bloody useful to have a source for those odd times you need a little. Did you stockpile it?
  18. Fair enough. But for what reasons can you then refuse to buy? You find that the boat is not close winded enough for your tastes, or sluggish etc. kind of a subjective decision.
  19. So you're not allowed to go sailing until you buy the thing? OR you mean some other kind of contract? If it's the former, I'd walk away, and not think twice.
  20. Yup, I've a login on that group. Was quite a busy weekend. Christina was scarfing 10x20 batons all weekend to use as ribands. Hopefully, we'll get the hull to below expected weight... All modification undertaken at my own risk, of course.
  21. Sorry it's in german and the music is crap. Little bit of excitement here. Was a large street party here this weekend (400,000 people) apparently someone had a little too much and went over the side while trying to get home.
