  1. Was actually a great day out. Hard work in the new boat, everything is pretty far away from everything else, and I saw between 7 and 27 knots of breeze so had a bit going on at times, but a very enjoyable experience overall. Have been meaning to post here and say thanks to the bbyc team for putting the day on for us. Sorry for not coming up the river but a beat back up the harbour on my own in 20 knots looked hard enough already without having a few beers and then having to push the tide as well.
  2. I see this morning they're saying Hugo boss has hit something and has foil damage. Sound alike he's fine to continue for now, but will be interesting to see how he's affected if he can't foil on one side.
  3. Guess we'll come as an Elliott then...
  4. just had a look and it's an spx5. But assume it'll still be L & B who look after them.
  5. I've a raymarine ap with a ram that works well but has started making a chattering noise when it's fully extended. Anyone know were to get it looked at?
  6. Does bear thinking about if you own a cored boat though... Not a good idea to make holes without sealing.
  7. I recently bought a duracore (balsa with veneer) cored glass boat from 1990 and had it surveyed by a good boatbuilder. He went over it with a fine tooth comb and found it to be in very good shape 26 years on. One little piece of rot near a gunnel where a fitting had been carelessly attached. Good as new below the waterline. Saying foam melts when solvents are poured on them or squashes when stood on when the core makes up only a portion of the system is a bit like saying plywood is no good because if you took one layer of a piece of ply and jumped on it it would break.
  8. The split is explained in section 7 of the nor. All done on phrf passages handicaps. 1a is .96 ND above, 1b is .87-.9599
  9. Agree with Sparky, well done Matt. Do not envy you having to go up the mast while solo with the kite stuck up. Saw JJ having trouble getting his Gennaker down at one stage too so you weren't the only single hander with a bit on! Tazzy Devil had a good sail, really enjoyable conditions all the way to Brett. Managed to use most of the wardrobe at various times and had some good surfs, particularly just after the hen and chicks when a squall of 30ish came through with fractional spinnaker up hitting 15s. Lack of time on the boat meant we struggled to get her going really well on the wind
  10. Some boats seem to have jumped divisions overnight... am I correct in assuming that the division allocation is based on the splits in the nor, and the handicaps used are your phrf passage handicap? The nor says handicaps are "based on phrf" which I assume gives the organisers licence to alter if they see a need, but with the entry list not showing handicaps and the divisions changing I'd like to be sure I'm starting at the right time...
  11. Seems like the fundamentals of this are pretty interesting, but this particular situation appears to have been really badly handled. It's common to allow divisions for gender/weight/ability or other things across many sports. But generally (as in this case) as long as the person entering isn't at an unfair advantage then what does it hurt to allow them to compete? If a 60kg kid wants to play rugby in the 80kg division, or a Paralympic swimmer wants to compete against able bodied swimmers, most reasonable people would be ok with it as long as it's safe for everyone. The justification
  12. My experience has been that buying a tidy boat that has been used regularly is a much better option than one that needs things doing and hasn't been used much in a few years. It's amazing how starting to use a boat that has sat leads to breakages on stuff that's got stuck/corroded/rotten while sitting around. And one that has obvious maintenance jobs that haven't been done will also have less obvious things that are harder to spot also needing doing. Also, 48 feet of old teak decks would frighten me. If they need replacing it's a big and very expensive job.
  13. Is there going to be such a list produced? Would be pretty good to know who you have to beat, and topyacht doesn't seem to be showing handicaps...
  14. If it makes you feel any better Ken it looks like we'll all be getting a good dose of rain on Sunday during the race home...
  15. I think so, but I have nmea0183 data to send, so as long as iregatta will interpret it then that seems like a solution. Although actually I've realised that my ais unit does nmea0183-2k multiplexing as well so I can output either...
  16. Does anyone have a rough idea of what the WiFi imux costs? Brookhouse website isn't very friendly...
  17. I have a similar question. Have a b and g hydra setup from the 90s. Wondering if I can use a go free to send data to an iPad to run Iregatta? The hydra system provides output in nmea 0183
  18. It might be 2 years rather than one. Haven't had the requirement arise before. Certainly The cat 3 cert is for 2 years so having had them serviced I'm good for 2 years. The service cost from safety at sea is plus parts so if they're replacing cylinder it'll be $65 ish, which makes just buying new ones look even more tempting.
  19. So my inspector for cat 3 has suggested they would like to see proof of life jacket servicing in the last 12 months. I have 8 life jackets. At about $45 each at safety at sea this is going to be quite expensive. I can imagine others must be in this position, is anyone aware of alternatives such as an option to self service somehow? @ $45 each for a service I'm tempted to buy new ones and sell my old ones on Trade me - I suspect the difference will be less than $45 and I'll at least end up with shiney new ones. Any ideas?
  20. Surely baby seat not required for single handed race?
  21. The piles at westhaven are good for the price, bit more jobbly than the actual marina berths but fine for a month. The only catch is they don't like you sleeping aboard out there so if you're planning on staying aboard for the month it's probably no good for you.
  22. stranger things have happened...
  23. Still figuring that out... hence why there's no entry in yet. Guess I'll have to decide pretty soon, it's not far away
  24. I've sailed on a young 11 that had this. Handy for keeping the pole out of the way, and didn't seem to be any issues with it being on a larger scale, other than as the bowman pulls it forwards once it's out of the bracket it's easy to drop the back of it and bang the cabin top, which is pretty easy to avoid if you're careful.
