  1. Glass verses wood Wood, easy to fix Easy to see damage Needs fixing asap, if left will get worse Painted so will need reprinting at some point Glass More robust Only needs a cut and polish every few years Damage can be hard to find and fix depending on where it is Once you paint a gelcoat boat it will be no better than a wooden boat in that respect Hard to beat a well built and maintained wooden boat Lots of people under maintain glass boats as they generally get away with it but you can't do that with wood so you will soon know when you go and look, if it a 20+ yr old woode
  2. Joker There's a 6.7 that's too small for a family of 4 but they sail really well. And a 8.2 that would be ideal as they are water ballasted so light to tow but twice your budget is what's being asked and more Don't be afraid to offer 25% less than asking price, most TY are hard to sell and getting quite old You should settle between 10 to 15% under asking price or your wife will fall in love with one and you will just buy it.
  3. Trojans are similar if not slightly slower than a Noelex 25 but with a higher SRI (self righting index) Very family friendly as far as TY go If you want performance then get a Ross 780 Here's something to use as a base for comparison http://www.nztya.nz/uploads/113077/files/Rating_Current_from_August_2016_-_Listed_by_Rating.pdf

  5. So looking like you'll make the last SSANZ race then
  6. Harbour regs Vessels to be identified (1) A person must not use a vessel on navigable waters unless it displays a name, consisting of letters the Roman alphabet or numbers that are not the vessel’s brand, make or model, and that is distinct to that vessel. (2) Subject to clause (3), this clause does not apply to: (a) non-mechanically powered vessels of less than six metres in length; and ( power driven vessels of less than four metres in length. (3) Non-mechanically powered vessels and power driven vessels referred to in subclause (2) must be marked with the current owner’s name and co
  7. Doing the cruising Div in the Coastal with family and going offshore agains as soon as I sort work out Will sus the harbourmaster etc, funny how you can sail 15000nm over halfway around the world and now you want to do something in your own country you now have to jump through hoops.
  8. All I can find in the safety regs is must be at least 50mm in height preferably 100mm, Thinking name on stern and sail numbers on each side of bow plus name on boom. Have Signcorp coming to look at boat tomorrow will try Stanley Signs if need a second option Dan from Boat Coat is overseas at present, thanks Herdy
  9. I'm lifting Ma'ara in a few weeks to do the antifoul and wanting to replace the stripe above the waterline, it was damaged by the anchor chain up in the Med before we bought her. Also want to redo the name etc plus we need sail numbers on the hull. Who can you recommend team ? Boat will be at Pier 21. Also thinking of putting name on both sides of the boom as its a leisure Furl boom and then only having the name on the stern, does this comply with YNZ requirements ?
  10. Once you've used AIS you'll never go back
  11. A few said they had trouble seeing us, the orange light was working all night, but it all depends on what traffic is on the waterfront behind and how many street sweepers with orange lights as well. We always anchor about 200m off the end of the wharf, we had our race tracker on and we run AIS. We will be a lot easier to see in Isslington bay for the last race plus if you finish the last and shortest race after dark you may have to take your own time as we could be busy.
  12. Do you think you get all or enough of the old oil out going down the dipstick tube, I really like taking the bung out of the sump and leaving it whilst I change the filter, sometimes I'll also pour a cup of clean oil through just to make me feel better. I can do this with my genset as it has a hose off the sump, but there isn't enough depth in the bilge under the main engine to do this, so seriously thinking of getting a hose made up to attach to sump bung then attach the other end to a small plunger pump Probably just being anal but it always makes you feel good after a good oil change an
  13. Thanks Winter, will do the same when I'm ready most likely
  14. Where did you end up getting your pump Winter ? Something I've got on the to-do list and I'm sick of the stupid little hand pumps that the hose comes off and drip oil Last three oil changes were as follows Fiji Panama Spain
  15. We have a C02 extinguisher with a head activated head on it in the engine bay as opening the door to extinguish a fire is going to fuel the fire Like this https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR1rx4Hd2MUltvVMJVrh9iZfYr48jtRhc55ujKUz2n4sLyANO4_I3RmMbxK0g
  16. The raft up in Issy bay is taking shape as well
  17. The big question is Will Smithy make the cut for race three It's going to be the big one what with the shortest course and finish in Issy Bay
  18. It's amusing how BPs attitude to NZ registration has changed seeing he will be legally residing in NZ in a NZ registered vessel offshore $1000 doesn't seem too higher price compared to losing your pension ? Not having a go at BP here but just interesting how people's perception can vary greatly depending on where we are standing at the time Don't get me wrong $800 that I paid two years ago or over a K now is daylight robbery but if I needed NZ support in what ever form whilst sailing around the Pacific/world then it's cheap support / insurance and I've never been anywhere that NZ regi
  19. Bought a Highfield rib nearly a year ago and am very pleased with it
  20. Sighted heading for the Tamiki river from Issy bay direction early arvo yesterday
  21. Yes it was the male that was the wrong person It's often the case that "assumption is the mother of all fuckups"
  22. Yes I know of a major brokerage who missed a very large sale by only talking to the wrong person recently. It happens all the time And just remember flash cars and suits often equal DEBT
  23. I think what the doomsayers are missing is the only ones hurting are the ones exiting boat ownership It's all about the difference between selling and buying, If your in boating for investment then your dreaming mate We listed our boat for less than I thought it was worth and definatly less than it owed us but it sold in 4 days ( probably lucky ) but we can buy a lot cheaper also in this market IMHO there are people out there that aren't meeting the market, some because they don't really wish to sell and others because their dreaming, but there are always options in any market.
  24. It's a generational thing Tim, our gen can't resist a bargain even if they cost twice what they are worth ! But the coming gen's what it new and now, so what your saying will happen it will just take a couple of natural disasters and time But I can see a opening for a boat dismatler to setup and buy for a $1 on trademe to scrap them I get very surprised every time I walk around marinas at some of the boats that have weed longer than the rigging and can't believe that someone is paying the fees. Wtf
  25. Craig there is no way you will own it in 15 years, I'll put money on it. The best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour
