  2. Was a massive bang and shock wave when it went off just after 6.30pm last night. Shook the house so much both the wife and I thought something had hit us here in Greenhithe by the the shops. https://www.facebook.com/250259695088969/posts/1770086979772892/ https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/105835319/a-boat-fire-and-explosions-have-been-reported-in-auckland

    Boat wifi

Used a couple of these last week for an offsite meeting of 10 people (wanted to ensure secure wifi). Takes a data SIM card and supplies 4G speed. Powered by any 5V USB charger. Plan on taking one out on the boat over the holidays. https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/NETTPL7300/TP-Link-TL-M7300-LTE-Advanced-Mobile-Wi-Fi-Share-4

  8. Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing is coming up searching for dinghy minder so I'll take the thing apart and see what I'm dealing with.

    Bird deterents

    Slightly cheaper version https://www.amazon.com/Magnetic-Bird-Deterrant-by-Pest-B-GoneTM/dp/B071JX4C6D/ref=pd_sim_86_8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=1MHYS92TQXEE419BAHGN
  10. No, didn't think to grab one last time we were out. Its a plastic hub, like a car wheel without a tyre, mounted horizontally with the tow line looped around it and the line end going out through a hole in the transom. As the tow line is pulled out (by the dinghy when we're underway) it tensions up the internal spring so that it winds back in when we stop. Its like the internals of a retractable garden hose.
  11. After much goooogling, buggered if I can find the proper name of this thing. The spring loading inside the drum has given up and I'm looking for parts or replacement options. Anyone know? TIA.

  13. +1 on Force4. Picked up a really good condition (soft bottom) 2.6m off TradeMe for $500.
  14. From experience ... have a think about how you intend to stow it when sailing (tow vs foredeck). If its the foredeck make sure you get something that will fit easily up there and you are able to get around it when you need to.
  15. That also applies to boats but generally only those that will fit on a trailer. Anything bigger you have to be coming to NZ to live for the first time before you can get a no-GST exemption on it. http://www.customs.govt.nz/news/resources/factsheets/Documents/Fact%20Sheet%2029.pdf
  16. There's one at Matiatia on Waiheke, but don't know what the permissions for use are. Waiheke Mooring Holders Society Inc hold the resource consent for use.
  17. Not sure where you get the idea that I despise anyone from. I'm just saying the reality is it costs these days. I too sailed an old wooden Sabot out of Wakatere as a kid, and did all the work on it myself. I also rode my bike from Forrest Hill to Narrow Neck and back again after a days sailing. However I wouldn't send a 9 year old out on the roads like that these days, because things have changed, and the reality is sailing dinghies have changed as well. Anyway, those yacht storage facilities are still there at Wakatere, and I bet there is room for more there and at other existing sail
  18. All the North Shore schools have access to the Waterwise programme which have boats on the beach at Murrays Bay, Lake Pupuke and Wakatere. Murrays bay and Wakatere have private lockers too. St Joseph's actually go up to Murrays Bay, Takapuna Intermediate use Pupuke. I'm sure Takapuna primary could get to Pupuke and Taka Grammar to Wakatere if they don't already. Waterwise is a voluntary program for primary and intermediate. High schools are on their own. Waterwise sailing is limited to Optimists. So where do the high school kids sail? Answer they don't! Its all up to parents. And
  19. Yep, as it says a good learner/starter boat, however there aren't many wooden ones used even in green fleet these days. Depends what the motivation for getting involved was, my comment was with a view to being semi-competitive. Regardless it's not cheap overall when adding in subs, storage locker fees and/or trailer for transport, sailing gear etc.
  20. Looked at the price of a second hand opti lately, which is the starting point for kids now? Not much change from 2 grand for a setup if you don't want your kid to start off on the wrong foot, 4 grand plus to be competitive. That's way beyond what the average family can afford. 23. Damn, took the wrong boat out, thought I was in the SeaLegs.
  24. That was my submission; that and the fact that the boat ramp is already often full so where are all the "new" sailors going to park. Its not like they can bring the boat and gear using the fairly inadequate public transport. You really are taking the piss now aren't you... Now you don't like the proposal, because there isn't enough parking? No I'm not. In the summer its a nightmare already. How do you expect to fit in the extra patronage (+ trailers etc) with the new facility? There are already clubs along the coast with sufficient room to add to or share space with better access fo
