  1. Of course it is entirely possible the unfortunate swimmer was deceased when struck by the vessel.
  2. Anyone used one of these? They look quite good, narrow to fit on the foredeck, might be a bit small on room for their length tho. http://www.trademe.co.nz/sports/kayaks-canoes/kayaks/multisport/auction-1302652341.htm
  3. I wonder how long before something like this becomes viable, http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2017/04/new-solar-powered-device-can-pull-water-straight-desert-air
  4. Best AKL to TGA weather for a long time very pleasant conditions out there. Looks a bit light inshore outside Mayor Island might be an option.

  8. Shame that's a tidy little boat. The old shitters that deserve to be on the beach don't seem to break off.
  9. 50 gusting 95 now. Looks like it is curving slightly west now.
  10. Yep looks like we will cop it in the Bay of Plenty, right in the the dangerous quadrant. One of the predictwind models showing 60 gusting 80 at 4p.m. At least the swell height has gone down from 8 to 6 meters. The high tide a 9 o'clock will make things interesting.
  11. Good idea, will finally be some good weather for this race with the Friday start. Should be a nice slide down the coast.

I think pretty much the entire Wairarapa coast can howl in a westerly, I've heard stories of boats getting hit with gravel miles out to sea.
  13. Hopefully most of this stuff is done but this is what I have just done. Tie down everything that can't be put away, fold down bimi covers and dodger unless it's sturdy, clip off halyards away from the mast, put a couple of extra ties around your sail cover. Double up lines put fenders on finger side of dock. Put some chafe protection on any lines subject to chafe. Put outboard away inside If you have a headsail on a furler I would be removing it. I am sure there is plenty more you can do a lot depends on how your boat is set up.
  14. Looks like a Friday start might be a better option.

Best to keep going to Napier not a nice place to get caught out.
  16. Iridium go is very good for out of mobile coverage but the data speed makes it unusable for most ordinary internet stuff. Speed is about ten times slower than a dial up modem. Wouldn't be without ours when further offshore though.
  17. Might be cheaper to just get a budget prepaid phone when you get there, some phones will not work on all networks as they are network locked, if your phone is locked you can get it unlocked through your provider but this is still no guarantee it will work everywhere.
  18. You may notice you can go pretty much anywhere in anything with care. Personally I go a bit bigger around 26ft at that size you start to get some headroom and the boat can look after itself a bit more. I'd forget about a trailer yacht loads of hassle going on and off the trailer for a day sail, did this myself for many years, a boat kept in the water is a lot easier to use and trailers can be costly to maintain so the difference in maintenance costs are not as large as you may think especially if you are prepared to get your hands dirty. One thing to remember though is if it's not fun for
  19. Regardless she is a long way south so hopefully stays safe and can effect a Jury rig of some sort to get the 900 odd miles to cape town, the french antarctic islands may be an easier way to go but is there anyone there at the moment I wonder.
  20. I don't see how a boat with runners could crash gybe and lose the rig, seems to be a common occurrence on the Vendee boats to end up pinned with the boom on the wrong side of the runners while they sort things out can't remember a case of it causing the rig to fail.
  21. Had a look wasn't a boom brake but a preventer line, never had much luck with these things myself as they seem to put a lot of load on things especially if the boom ends up in the water. Ultimately unnecessary if you have running backstays surely.
  22. Doesnt look like much of a backing pad under the washers for a 50 footer.
  23. Yes the First series (Like Outrageous Fortune) are proper sailing boats and as such command a higher price, other ones such as the Oceanis and Cyclades are more geared toward the Charter/Marina hopper market. The problem is if the thing doesn't sail very well you will probably end up not bothering to hoist the sails a lot of the time so why not just buy a launch. (sail well doesn't necessarily mean fast it just means comfortable and well balanced under sail and doesn't need 20 knots to get moving).
  24. A great read about the early days of Whaling in this country, some incredible photographs as well. https://www.nzgeo.com/stories/thar-she-blows-a-grisly-trade-in-bone-and-oil/
