  1. When I read your post Ed, my first thought was rig leaning over or possibly not actually on center ( I had to put an adjustable rig in a 5o5 for a customer who only went fast on one tack. Turned out the mast gate at deck level was built off centre. We measured from the chainplates and all seemed well, as the chainplates were offset too!). I also thought about foils etc, much as suggested earlier. One other possibility could be a curved rudder blade. Not likely, but possible. I remember leaving my starling rigged with the rudder on and going to lunch when I was a kid - when I came back I ha
  2. Looking good! Nice and tidy without too much to trip over, exactly what I'm aiming toward! Seems I have something to look forward to - So far I haven't left single figures. Next weekend things should be all go. It's the last big karate event for the summer on Sunday, then I'm free to go sailing!
  3. We're out for squaddie weekend. Eldest daughter will be "triathloning" somewhere which means I'll be chauffeur, mechanic, support crew, and cheerleader. Between sailing, triathlons, and karate tournaments its no surprise the lawn swallows the cars between mowings! Ps next weekend we're both competing at the nz karate champs.
  4. Week nights are pretty unlikely as I don't get away early enough, although there may be a possibility once the christmas rush is over. 7 deg sounds pretty narrow, glad I asked as I thought it would be a bit wider.
  5. As alert readers will probably be aware Euphoria is undergoing a minor refit. Bits are being bought and/or built according to my layout plan. Can anyone tell me what the best sheeting angle is for a No.2 jib on a gbe or similar? I can suss the fore-and-aft (twist) myself, but don't want to attach bits in the wrong places to start with. So, roughly how far off centre do you position your leads? I know that ideally they get trimmed for every wave and gust, but gimme some idea for the lower end of the wind range please? I don't have a No.1 to worry about at this stage. Cheers
  6. Why not? There aren't many dinghy's faster than a fireball downhill in a breeze. At the GBR joint 'ball and 505 nationals, it was interesting to see the comparison with the top fireballs going past the top 505's even though they had like half the sail area.
  7. Mid March, good call! Is there an official category for this? I only ask because I'd love to join in, but am unlikely to be cat 3 and up to date by then. That said, a lot of the basic equipment will be onboard anyway, I'm just not very likely to have bought a new flare pack. We have flares, just recently expired ones.
  8. Am I missing something?? That link seems to have all the guff about the inaugural race, which was Jan 31 this year? Not to mention that (I think) that's anniversary weekend, which I also think has just been penned for Mahurangi/Kawau. Given the choice I'd rather stay close to shore at this stage, especially considering I'm still in development phase, haven't made it to "beta testing" thus far!
  9. Count me in. Sail up Friday arvo/evening, family stuff with MCC on the Saturday, race to Kawau and enjoy KYC hospitality Sunday, then sail/race home Monday. Tagging on to existing races would make it easier for all involved. Are there places one could pitch a tent for the night, or would we have to sleep onboard? As yet I haven't got as far as the interior, I'm still working on the sailing setup.
  10. A couple of random ideas... (1) In my PT days there was a regatta held in Bream Bay every year. It was a two day event titled something like "Upper North Island Paper Tiger Challenge" and the idea was that Northland boats could race without the journey down country, and the Auckland boats got to travel north. It was open to all small cats, and run, IIRC, jointly by the NZPTOA and Marsden YC. Not certain, but I think even TC may have attended a few of these. Maybe something similar could be organised for bigger boats? Plan it for a 3day weekend, and visitors could take friday of
  11. I only saw the end bit of the race SD, looked like you were handling things just fine. I would have liked to have been able to see more, but would rather have been out there! When I saw you beating up past the tank farm I could see boats coming downhill under kite up past the bridge, so hoped to see you do the same, then I guess you crossed the line dropped the jib and went home. Maybe you were a wee bit ahead of the other boats (or a totally different race perhaps). Ponsonby scow looked awesome from the dockside near north wharf. Not too long now and Euphoria will be getting up c
  12. ...the big red schooner looking thing that was charging upwind under the bridge? Looked pretty tender, and pretty fast. At first glance I thought Black Panther, then realised it was red, and thought maybe S2, but then saw that sitting in its berth. Unfortunately I was taking part in the Auckland Sling Walk with the family, so not sailing, but got to watch a bit from the wynyard quarter lookout thingy. Saw Vodafone and Sundreamer, although didn't see either with a kite up. Also saw what I think was Dirty Deeds charging downhill under a red kite, which looked real fast from wher
  13. Wow! Impressive to see the tri up on foils, albeit briefly.
  14. I started a thread along these lines a few years back, and as a noob on the site, I was promptly shut down and told I was wrong. I asked why I could import blocks, cleats etc. from the UK for a third of the price of buying locally. There were some replies with guff about GST and other overheads, but to be fair, I was paying full retail from the UK, plus freight. I continue to import if I need more than a few items, and pocket the savings. Loyalty doesn't pay the bills, sadly. That said, it's not just the marine industry. When I first returned from nine years in Europe, I had been
  15. Now on trademe. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/multihull/auction-948119226.htm
  16. Jeez maybe I should add mine to this list. Euphoria - GBE - Aaron Lowe and Gina Whitfield. Moored Northcote. (Soon)
  17. Think I'll go with plan F. Or is it G? I'll set up a decent bridle similar to what Freeeeeedom (how many e's in that??) has, and purchase a fishing float with a stick on it. A snap clip on the float, and I have something high enough to reach from the tramp without having to lie down. then hopefully I can... Motor up to the float, kill the motor, grab the stick, hook up the bridle, unclip the float thingy and stow it onboard somewhere. And do the reverse when I'm heading out. Which reminds me, I must pop into ullrich and grab a couple of bits of tube, one to go over the throttle
  18. I'm liking the look of those PWM buoys. Something like that would make it easier to find when the light isn't too good too, especially if fitted with a small flag, or perhaps a glowstick pressed in the top if I'm planning on getting back late.
  19. Thanks guys, really appreciate the input. KMM and freeedom, thanks again, probably saved me a fortune, since I won't waste money on a fergi or the dodgy black rope. Cheers guys.
  20. Can I use 16mm polyester 16plait for the bridal? Was bought for a mainsheet but never used. Eventually I'll get some of that really flash black stuff with the stretchy core.
  21. Yep, I expect so. Is that a buoy or grrrrl?
  22. I'm new at this whole moored boat thing, so wanting a little advice in how to secure my new toy to my new mooring. At present the mooring just has a small standard buoy, and for the next few months it's gonna stay that way, until I can afford a Fergie. What is the current thinking on attaching a cat to one of these? I'm assuming I can simply attach a bridle to the mooring riser? I need to give Anthony his mooring back soon, so want to make sure mine is right by then.
  23. OK, so, having spent the last half hour searching the web, including finding the page your link was meant to go to, there is still no word of a NZ cup boat sinking. One Australia sank in 1995. I was slightly mistaken, however, as that campaign was lead by Bertrand, not Murray.
  24. Dead link, and google drew a blank so I'm still no wiser. Sorry about that!
  25. Think I'll stick to the Cherry for a 16 foot weekender! 4 berths, light weight, semi-self-righting, and goes downwind like a rocketship in a blow. Gotta say, I'm liking the ketch rig idea tho!
