  1. Im fine with it really, too, I just dont want one guying buying up all the marinas and having a monopoly. I for the life of me do not understand how he is allowed to own three marinas. It is simply a effing rort that one guy can have such a monopoly.
  2. I watched it online the other day. Cost me 7 euro to rent. Well worth it. Hard core voyaging. Really enjoyed it. There is a segment of their ferro boat being built in NZ after they shipwrecked their wooden one up in the pacific islands.
  3. Pity I'm not a Pom. From the UK Small Ships Registration website: The UK Ship Register You can register your boat with the UK Ship Register for use at sea. Part III registrationRegister your boat on the Part III (Small Ships Register) if you want to prove the boat’s nationality when sailing outside UK waters. It costs £25 for 5 years. https://www.gov.uk/register-a-boat/the-uk-ship-register
  4. Good point Doctor, and didn't meant to hijack the thread! But yep, fully intend to do some serious coastal cruising, and a longer trip to Chatham Islands would be on the cards for sure, and is no mean undertaking requiring careful planning and a definite good test I would say.
  5. When I think of Panmure, I think of crime. That may be my own inbuilt prejudices surfacing. So, who does / has kept their on one of the pole moorings there near the Panmure Bridge? Was your boat ever broken into?
  6. Thanks ex TL. I haven't ruled out putting my boat on a cargo ship to some distant port to start from there due to the potential "show stopper" you mention. If I have to, I will.
  7. Well Dr Watson, for me a lot of it IS about Cat 1 or not Cat 1. I don't mind the epirb or life raft requirements, but some of the other rules are a "one size fits all" nature and have just not been thought through well enough. I've already mentioned the requirement that someone on board has done an ocean passage - that aint gonna work for me as a single-hander, and no, I don't want to go to a passage on someone elses boat first - I frankly, don't want to put my safety into someone elses hands. I am preparing my boat as best I can for the worst possible case scenarios - as much as one
  8. You need a lot more than just a tonnage cert. I know as I tried to register with Jersey last year. You will need Bill of Sale not only from the person you purchased boat off, but the person previous to that too. I could not produce the required bills of sale, so they would not register. All up, including the cost of registration plus the tonnage survey - it will cost about same as NZ cat 1, but without all the extra stuff you need to get a cat 1 cert in NZ. I then tried Dutch, but their basic certification is for EU waters only, and useless worldwide. They do have a worldwide cert, but
  9. Yes heavy, but sip much less fuel, and no mucking about working out your oil mixes, and is much less noisy than it's two stroke cousins. As usual in boating, their are always compromises and trade-offs.
  10. This may be a little cheeky to post this here when I already have posted details in classified section, but I know there are a bunch of you double and triple hull crew.orgers that visit here and post in this section, that have previously talked about powering your craft with an outboard motor. Scroll down to the classified section and see the deal I have going on a new 9.9hp four stroke with a high thrust prop.
  11. New Merc 9.9 'Command Thrust' four stroke outboard is available. Brand new in 2017. Please don't confuse the 'Command Thrust' with your standard cheaper new Merc 9.9 four strokes. This sucker has all the bells and whistles you can think of (except power tilt, but it's super easy to manually tilt so I declined on the extra cost and weight of adding power tilt), such as: **Electric Start AND Manual Start for ultimate start reliability **Gear shift AND throttle both on the tillers twist grip...no acrobats reaching off the stern to change gears **High thrust prop especially designed
  12. Whatever you guys are all smoking, I want some. Back to life rafts...so, I guess if a life raft could go KABOOM inside a plane, then it could go KABOOM inside your boat too. So, do I now need two life rafts? A life raft to save me if the other life raft goes KABOOM and blows a hole in my boat? A life raft to save me from my life raft. Confused? #metoo
  13. Accu Weather appear to be more accurate that Met Sometimes I look at Met and it looks like the next five days are hang yourself weather, but on Accu it will be just an odd shower in places and mostly sunny, which often proves to be the case. If Met are erring on the side of caution, then what happened to them missing the strength of that massive blow a month or so back? I'm with the OP...I think they are just a bit useless.
  14. Couple of query on price. $1650 cash (or bank deposit) First in best dressed. Cheers all
  15. Addendum: This WindPilot is brand new. Only reason selling is I have been gifted a couple auto pilots, which will do me fine for inshore sailing I am planning. The WindPilot is ideal for those wanting self steering for longer trips, and / or those who don't want to use electricity.
  16. For boats up to 5,500lb displacement, though I have heard it successfully being used on yachts up to 8,000lbs displacement with no issue. details here: http://windpilot.com/n/wind/en/prod/lite/ Pics and viewing available for serious inquiries Cheers
  17. You are continually asking "why" does he want to do this, he is asking himself "how" can he do this. You are a "why", he is a "how", and the twain will never meet. I think you either instinctively understand why someone would want to undertake such a venture, or you don't. Alberto Torroba, who successfully sailed a 15 foot dugout canoe alone across the Pacific without navigational instruments a couple decades ago, when continually asked "why did you undertake this voyage" finally threw up his hands to the journalist and said "Don't ask why!"
  18. Portland Pudgy anyone.
  19. Thanks Wheels. The mooring area I am looking at is more or less parallel between Beach Haven Wharf and the Yacht Club either side, i.e about 250M row from either side's wharf / landing area....though you seem to be saying a dink with outboard a better bet due to the water flow in this area.
  20. Anyone moor their boat in Hobsonville , specifically in the area near Hobsonville Yacht Club? If so, any issues in a big blow? Security / Thieves etc? Thanks
  21. This has come up before. How one guy is allowed to own three marina in the Auckland area is beyond belief. Anticompetitive with a capital A. Murdoch has a harder time trying to buy all the SKY UK media rights.
  22. I get it, I must have missed the "apartment" bit .
  23. Hold on/ No way you are paying that to rent. You must own the berth , which for a 15m berth would have been a massive outlay, and your yearly rate is opex. Surely...
