  1. May be of interest.... this week's video from Mads at Sail Life shows a full CC application...
  2. Google Translate refers to a "broken bar" and I wasn't sure whether to interpret that as the tiller or boom. It turns out it was the tiller: https://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2018/08/11/golden-globe-disaster-philippe-peche/. He has elected to drop out of the race. I thought this was an interesting comment (again via Google Translate):

Wow that is super-impressive. Menzies 13yo won Opti Nationals last year / McGlashan, 15, won Tanner and Tauranga Cups last year.

Also I believe Bruce Kendall coached GBR's 4th placed women's competitor... at least he was seen greeting her with a hug as she came ashore after the medal race. Would be interesting to know if there are other Kiwis coaching abroad.

Yeah another case in point was the 49erFX medal race where the Austrians were heading for gold with an 11 point lead, capsized on the last upwind in a big right shift autotack, finished the race last and dropped to silver overall behind the Dutch. Still, if you listen to the commentary in the period leading up to it, they were predicting exactly the shift that occurred, so you can argue it still comes down to skill... https://youtu.be/786GQMOIFzc?list=PL0yLg4wYxxpd3wUyEnHV3N36bMB3YCG55&t=3605

  7. Speaking of the Aero, I notice pretty healthy numbers at their Worlds currently -underway https://www.sailwave.com/results/WPNSA/2018_RS_Aero_Worlds/2018WorldResults.htm Aero 5 - 60 entries Aero 7 - 103 entries Aero 9 - 43 entries Sorry for the thread drift. Carry on.
  8. Anyone know how the Aero is selling in NZ? Certainly looks like a cool boat at a pretty reasonable price.

Others will likely have more insight into rigs on boats the size of yours, but at least in smaller boats, leeward sag would be expected upwind, yes? What makes you feel it's excessive? Downwind, what are you doing with your mainsheet? This acts as your backstay. Again I can really only speak for smaller cats but it's extremely important to have enough tension there to avoid risking the integrity of your mast. If you're relying on dinghy experience you may be letting the main out further than you should. Chris "Toothdigger" Blake and "Fast Eddie" Hansen, F16 USA233, on Lake Winnebago at O
  10. According to their website - sailfish.charters@xtra.co.nz
  11. Might be worth pinning this thread to encourage newcomers to contribute.
  12. I'm curious why so many NZ boats are built with cedar core. Everyone I speak to seems leery of them because of the potential for water absorption in the event of skin penetration. Thoughts?

    It works!

    Holy moly. It's a start.
  16. Some more details from the club commodore at a press conference this morning... he was moving toward the stern to make a routine sail adjustment when "a large wave hit the boat causing him to slip into the water". He was wearing an inflatable PFD but the crew have reported that it failed to inflate. Flotation devices were thrown "in very close proximity" to him but he was unable to reach them and was seen to slip below the water. https://wgntv.com/2018/07/22/sailor-that-went-overboard-during-race-to-mackinac-idd/
  17. Seems a little pessimistic that the CYC statement is already talking about him in the past tense... http://www.cycracetomackinac.com/search-suspended-for-man-overboard-in-chicago-yacht-club-race-to-mackinac/

Doesn't look good, though at least it's not cold. Incident reportedly happened about 5 miles out.

Again showing what a phenomenon he is, he's just taken the A-class Europeans with 4 bullets and a third, 10 points ahead of 2nd - https://northsails.com/sailing/en/2018/07/ashby-wins-another-with-north-sails Fortunately he still seems to be on the ETNZ payroll.

In case anyone's interested, there's a live tracker for the Nacra's active right now... http://nacra.sailracer.org/eventsites/tracking-mobile3.asp?eventid=212355&templ=mobiletracking3 I think they may be in the starting sequence for the second race of the day right now. BTW, it's not obvious but you have to click the menu icon at the bottom of the page to get the race selection menu.

Negative. Google tells me he's at the Governor's Cup match racing in Newport Beach, CA, crewing for WA's Will Boulden. http://www.govcupracing.com/
