  1. When an electric boat sinks? Can you get electrocuted? My first thought is no, The battery will short between the terminals in salt water, fizz bang pop no battery. Experts?
  2. https://www.9news.com.au/national/nsw-boating-pwc-licence-to-have-massive-price-increase-on-july-1/0d77bb70-7160-48d7-b2da-6730b33f6aef
  3. Just a bit of bow down trim for its IOR rating.
  4. Depth sounder pretty useless as deep water right up to the coral. How far ahead can the forward scan "see".? Coral so very little above sea lever - breakers and some palm trees a mile or so inside the reef
  5. Sorry, been away. I based it on an actual passage so, tropics, zero visibility, never been there before. No right or wrong here, just interested what other people would consider acceptable.
  6. You are sailing in zero visibility. You need to pass a big outcrop of coral to port then turn 90 deg port. What navigation tools do you have and how close will you get and still be comfortable? Closer cuts time off your trip, farther off means less chance of hitting the coral.
  7. The question is will they stop us anchoring everywhere or let us anchor everywhere?
  8. Used to beat them regularly in a cav 32, by a lot. Whereas a D28 could nearly keep up, Chico 30 was faster than us. There's a Saraband on Tme at a good price.
  9. Just the Northland coast, Sept and Oct. Angela is visiting her (102yo) mum so I'm going sailing.
  10. Bliss. I've got 2 months coming up soon.
  11. Is the ocean race what became of whitbread/Volvo? Or is it something else?
  12. In Ks example zero slippage is an anchor, any slippage would be less force. Use your anchor cable and it's enough at maximum force which the same as being anchored. Done.
  13. Use whatever you use for your anchor. You are overthinking it.
  14. The good old days of paper charts. Notes 1 this island is 1.5 nm west of charted position 2 this rock is 4 nm west of the charted position. 3 this rock was observed in 1889 but hasn't been seen since 4 this chart needs to be moved 8nm east. Interesting most of the corrections were east/west. A guy with a sextant could determine north/south reasonably accurately but east/west not so much.
  15. I've never used way points, always seemed weird to me.
  16. What is their life expectancy? Painted or unpainted?
  17. Reminds me of this photo
  18. Most modern boats heave to better with no jib. The bow tries to fall off anyway.
  19. Never used one in anger. As CD pointed opportunities are few and far between and best avoided. But I remember the first time I read about them and thinking that's it. So I've only used my homemade ones in serious conditions (102kn recorded at north Cape but averages around what IT described), but were I heading somewhere like the southern ocean that would be my weapon of choice.
  20. Of course, that's exactly what you'd try first, then if it continued to deteriorate sea anchor or drogue. I've been known to heave to going to weather 25kn just while I cooked dinner. For anyone who hasn't tried it the sudden improvement in comfort is astounding.
  21. Do you charge it from the boat or plug into the grid somehow?
