  1. And TL - I went everywhere trying to find a plastic one but nothing fitted the space(s) I wanted to use - without remodelling the forard 1/3 of the yacht.................. AndDtwo - trust me - at my age I know a thing or 2 about bowels and how they (sometimes don't) work!! Sigh. LATERAL - thought about that but decided against it as I haven't a bloody clue how to do it - I understand plywood much better...............
  2. Thanks KM - that's what I was planning on doing but wondered if there was, literally, a gasket material of some sort out there. Decision made!! Yay. However, several have raised the 'flowcoat' finish. I've read lots of stuff that says 4 to 6 coats of epoxy is fine as the protection and as the finish. Why use flowcoat on a holding tank? And does it need a finish over itself in a holding tank?
  3. Hi all, while we're discussing holding tank hoses....... I'm building a sewage holding tank out of glassed, epoxy on ply. Half way through it - b&$ch of a job - why can't boat designers make at least some sections in straight lines with right angles??? Anyway, I'm thinking of making the top piece of ply removable - but that means I need a gasket to seal the top well to the box - for obvious reasons. Any thoughts on what material to use as a gasket???
  4. Seriously!!! $5200 is all this idiot gets??? We confiscate boats for undersized fish and over quota recreational fishing. But this guy gets fek all??? guy should have lost the boat at the very least.
  5. She sailed past us a week and a half ago on the outside of Rakino - she had all the sails up. Spectacular. And can she move!! My mate got some good photos - but I was helming at the time. Not sure why she was out - she headed back in later in the day.

    Fizboats

I'm with you FISH, have a party but think about everyone else on the water. I'm lucky that I can avoid going away in the xmas period because i can go away lots of other times. So I/we can go to quiet bays, and when I/we want to party, I/we go downstairs, close the hatch (or at least keep the stereo to a level that hurts our ears but no-one elses), and party without the rest of the bay having to listen to us. The arrogance of arseholes who decide in a crowded bay at xmas (or any other time) that the stereo on the back of the boat after midnight at full bore is fab, are, well, arsehole
  7. Also, when attempting to get the boat to go in reverse (when not in the dock, i.e. if you stern in to your berth), it pays to start the attempt with the boat stern into the wind. If you're side on or facing into the wind (especially if it's blowing a bit and you have a light/smallish yacht), the nose tends to get blown away before you get traction in reverse. So you end up going in a half circle before you get traction - and in a narrow lane that can mean you're aiming at the nearest boat when you finally get traction - and end up ramming into forward in a hurry and starting the whole cock up

    Lashings

Thanks Willow, it's been so long since I added a pic I'd forgotten how!

    Lashings

Clearly I've forgotten how to add images and can't see any info on the site about how to do it so y'all better imagine what a wondrous thing it was.........

    Lashings

Just to finish this thread ....... here's a pic of the memorial with the rope work done by a crew.org man of good standing! I'm never sure whether to name people on these forums - privacy and all that - but the people concerned were very grateful - added a nice touch to it. Not sure how to add pics so hopefully this worked..........
  11. I'm with smithy - I'm seriously thinking of selling as well - a major (but not the only) reason being marina costs. At Westhaven we now pay for power & water on top of the fees which used to cover these. And the fees have increased - albeit slightly for mine. I looked at going back to a trailer sailor - had one I left rigged on the hard at Westhaven before I bought the keeler. But Westhaven doesn't have that option any more. And then I looked at both marinas closer to Waiheke (would suit a trailer sailor not bashing up the Waitemata against the sou'wester) to see what costs are for a t
  12. MY - it was Frank & Margaret Dye who did those remarkable voyages in the Wayfarer. I've got 1 of their books. Closer to home Dave Perillo spent 6 months in the Yasawas living on a John Welsford Navigator (15 feet open boat). And he did some pretty awesome stuff in the Hauraki Gulf as well. Great stories - but not for me - at my age I like my comfort to much
  13. So Wheels, what Biocide do you use, where do you get it from? I always thought that (with my usual extremely limited knowledge of anything mechanical) there was little I could do to prevent the bug other than keep water out and keep tanks as full as possible......... But if a Biocide works, is cheapish and easy to use - then I'd be keen.

    Lashings

Not the "lashings will continue until morale improves" kinda lashings Long story, but does anyone know someone who could do permanent lashings that 'look' seaman like on something similar to this exterior structure? Like most things, it's not my area of expertise............. The lashings are to hide the blue steel bracing that you can see in the connecting cross pieces (roughly the size you'd expect in a kid's playground swing set). It's meant to look like it's actually holding the structure together when in fact it's the steel doing the holding. The structure is going to be part o
  16. Is our (and I'm a newbie to marina berths - only rented at westhaven for 5 years now) attitude a case of older guys and girls remembering that berth holders had either ownership or a very real say in the marinas? How they were run etc. That's not so true now - it's a corporate/large council thing now. Sign of the times? Bad times maybe? I have to say that even at an age that's not far from retirement (read - OLD), I'm thinking of going back to a trailer sailer. I can play with her, (the boat) without the berth costs. I can launch wherever. I can walk into the back yard and fall in love with
  17. Hi all, got my monthly email from Westhaven. Berth charges have gone up. My fingerless 10m berth went up 18%. Wish I could put those sort of increases to my clients..............
  18. I joined when the 'new' club was first mooted/saved. Don't go up there myself much. But it's a piece of our gulf heritage that if we lose it, will never be replaced. Don't know where you get the idea Harrytom that you were ripped off on diesel: 1. Club charges 20c extra to non club members, not $1 extra as you said. Go look at the club website - they explain the cost difference. 2. Even at $1 extra; you put 10L in and had to pay $10 extra - that's not okay? Even though there's nowhere else to get fuel, even though people like me and many other crew.org people subsidise the club via our a
  19. Google Mahurangi regatta 2017 and you'll (eventually) get the website - the regatta is a small part of the Mahurangi teams efforts. So you'll find all sorts of stuff about the Mahurangi - and about all the stuff they do.
  20. Well done - she looks a lovely wee ship, enjoy the trailer sailer scene. I had a trailer sailer for 6 years - loved it (but thought keeler would be better soooooo sold her and bought a small keeler.....), have had the keeler for the last 5 years - seriously thinking of going back to trailer yachting. Nothing against keelers, but several things (including cost) making me second guess the decision to go to keelers. Keep up the blog!!!!
  21. Maybe pick a decade - eg 60's or 70's? Or do another letter one like T as done previously - it gives a lot of latitude to come up with something original (and not to costly) plus you're guaranteed to have a big variety of costumes - which is always a laugh. Or pick a colour as a theme? Xmas theme? Music? Wild West? Olympics - come dressed in your fav sport costume? Dress as a Beatles song (Yellow sub, Walrus, Eleanor Rigby etc)
  22. Haha, didn't see that And thanks for the thoughts - I'll have a little play - I've got some leftover non-skid from a previous job so I'll see what that works out like.
  23. After scanning all the replies from everyone - I've had a closer look at the areas that are non-slip. And that much neglected, ill-used part of me called 'the brain' tells me the non-slip is indeed part of the mould. The highest part of the nonslip areas are at the same level as the rest of the deck area - so it's obviously (tho' not to me at first ) part of the mould. Soooo, next question for you to ignore : What sort of pain should I paint it with - given that it doesn't need non-slip as such?
  24. Gidday experts, I was going to re coat the non-slip on a couple of areas on my whiting 29 that are discoloured. But when I started to sand the old non slip, it very quickly became white (the non stick colour is light grey). But the non stick pattern is still very apparent, and just as non slip as when it was grey, just not grey any more. Could the non slip have originally been embedded in the grp? I'm specifically talking about the sugar scoop stern which was added after original boat manufacture. But the pattern is identical across all the non slip areas on the boat. Don't want to
  25. If you go the Wet & Forget way, go to TARGET CLEANING SUPPLIES in Onehunga, 49 Victoria Road. They have the same product for WAY, I mean WAY less than Wet & Forget. I've been using it on paths etc for a few years now. as always, check contents etc, don't take my word on it. They don't do delivery though so it's helpful for Aklers only.
