  1. The microbes have a very short life but before they die they multiply and produce waste deposits, both of which descend to the bottom of the fuel tank. One bacteria microbe can reproduce more than 7 million microbes in 24 hours. Due to the rate of reproduction and their short lives, the build-up of dead microbes can be quite fast. Any fuel tank with an air pocket will produce condensation when the temperature falls far enough, and is therefore likely to attract these tiny microbes. After a day out on the road, the remaining diesel is warm from the heat of the engine and as the temperature c

    Akarana 350

Apart from reading on crew.org about the Akarana 350,who in the public domain knew this event took place??I do not buy news papers, only watch tv1 or 3 news/sport cannot remember seeing anything,if I go back to the coastal who was the sponsor??the old days of lindauer etc it made on tv. No big names no interest??
  3. Funny you should mention sailing with oldies,1976 Dad teamed up on a yacht and even though were at the backdoor, what I learnt away from the old boy was/is valuable experience.being only 16 at the time put on the foredeck and first experience was changing a terelene sail, socking wet and hank on another. And went back the following weekend for more punishment
  4. The issue is not so much Children not wanting to sail but when they have outgrown the Starling PT Laser etc why they are not progressing in to keelboat crew. Sure there is that keen element on keelboat or trailer sailors like the 5.9 etc for a better word want to be prima donnas but where has joe average gone too??Once finished Kohi, glendowie etc where do they dissapear too?

  7. his magnificent solid silver trophy cup was first sailed for in 1921 after Otago issued a written challenge to Auckland announcing that their leading boat would come to Auckland and race the champion of the north in a beat of five series. On March 24th, 1921 on the Waitemata Harbour the “Iron Duke” owned and sailed by Governor General Lord Jellicoe, competed against “Heather” from Otago, sailed by W.J.P.McCullouch. “Heather” and her crew emerged victorious and the cup went south to Port Chalmers until the Aucklanders regained it a year later in “Desert Gold” skippered by Joe Patrick. 8. mullet boats, that will sort the boys from men or girls
  9. Membership is a catch 22 situation. Does a club rely on bar sales to keep club going?admin etc or do you raise membership fees to run the club and bar takings becomes the cream for the club? If a club relied on bar takings alone it would fold like many RSAs are doing, drink driving with such low limits(why would I drive for an hour each way for 2 beers?) Push membership up and those with limited funds due to high rents/mortgagees etc drop off Yes every club wants its own identity but maybe by combining clubs together, higher membership, possibly lower fees? Our local RSA has closed but m
  10. just maybe the media could pick up on "Youth in boats" 1/2hr segment form around the country and push the point its not just for those who want to be Olympic champions? Would need to a sponsor of course, once a week on tvnz.
  11. exactly "MarkMT"same I did back in 1972ish on Lake pupuke"not a flash "P" but got around the course, someone who shall remain naneless sailed there too, mummy would be on side of the lake barking out orders and daddy on the other side doing the same, yes that person achieved alot meanwhile his 2 siblings disappeared to where?? Brought my son a "P" 10yr ago, rigged it pushed him out he capsized, gave directions how to right it,no safety boat mid winter, got the hang of it after a few more capsizes,(kayak on standby) him and his brother just want to sail now,not interested in racing as went out f
  12. unfortunately the listing has gone from my trade me,but today a salthouse 25 1/4 tonner in reasonable condition sold for $4.5k is this the sign of things to come. From the photos looked tidy and ready to go,cheap cruising yacht.10hp bukh
  13. Interesting reading that a lot of clubs and you guys n girls are doing your bit but how do you get them from single hand/dinghy sailing to be interested in crewing on a trailer sailor/keel boat and retaining them. Apart from my 2 boys we use to take those who had out grown the "starling"etc ,the few we took only come out once maybe twice, there was no screaming from skipper, alcohol free vessel. Seems to be a general problem with people I know. Most of my age group are not agile on the bow anymore and few quick tacks notice the joints arent quite what they use to be. The thought is maybe take
  14. The Chatfield dripless has a water connection 6mm and a grease nipple which needs a shot every 100hrs ,I had a T on the water feed to engine, never had a leak and periodically check for heat, never had an issue,What I did like about the chatfield was if a issue developed you could loosen 2 nuts on a flange and install gland packing, had mine 3 yrs never had any trouble, proberly done 300 odd hours.

    Yanmar

Poor Bugger working for them,.We have all Yanmar fridge plants and even when alarming out high temp, push clear and they just keep going.
  16. "P" class on trade me range $52 to $1300 "opti" $300 to $3k is that part of the problem with youth must have the top boat?? The old man back in 72 paid $100 no recorded breaker but it was a start to learn to sail,if I didnt like sailing no biggie can sell for $100 KM can record the sunburst we sailed, heavy old sunbursts, but given the right day we manged to fluke a win or 2. It was a cheap way of getting in to racing.
  17. Following on from membership thread. 5 of us( 50+)Discussing this last night and looking back on our youth. Sunday was race race day at the lake in our "Ps" and every opportunity would drag them down the beach, after school, holidays just couldn't sail enough. The odd invite to sail on keel boat one day or weekend we jumped at it,brought our our own trailer sailers/small keelers and away when ever possible and raced different series either on own vessel or crewed depending on the event. Today you see under 16s away looking totally bored why?? we would be sailing the dinghy/rowing etc was it

    Yanmar

never had a major problem with yanmar except for exhaust elbow that let go at the wrong time,To be fair had I removed the cladding from elbow and saw the state of it would of replaced it,replacement was easy and we made our own for $20.00 out of galv. water pump was external belt driven ,white star pump, easy to remove but problem no one stocked impeller, had new impeller fail but you can get that with impeller, never used oil, changed every 100hrs + filter and fuel filter. No fuel pump as such as tank had a hand pump (like on a tote tank)so bleeding was easy as, 30 yr old motor 16hp,never failed
  19. In general club memberships are dropping due to things from my experience 1)old fossils who do not like change 2)Oh no we cannot justify that expense just to see if we can attract more members 3)have a look around clubs after a race how many crews go to the club?bet numbers have dropped off due to having 1 or 2 lemonades while sailing and wont risk driving just in case. 4)as someone stated and I have noticed, where are the young dinghy sailors 16/17 boys/girls gone too?why have they not stepped up?is it because we wont take a novice or maybe discovered girls/boys. 5)it was talk about at c
  20. Been thinking about this requirement. If there was 100 entries and say average crew of 5 thats 500 personal, what a time consuming job checking each crew member with the club they have put down to see if they are legit or not, what a waste of rayc resources. If this was to apply every race and every club in future you can kiss yacht race good bye. This is a start of a slippery slope and promotes Elite yachts/crews only, imo theres goes the coastal and any special event racing. That means even though I am confident of sailing a yacht around 350 mile course I wouldnt be eligible under the exp
  21. Hmm $100 for 2hrs?? Went out on the Soren Larson about 8 yrs ago $80 lunch included, 8.00am to 4.00pm around rakino and back
  22. pybc 380 members mixed launch/yacht maybe 200 vessels which strugle to get 4 entries thursday night winter sunday series maybe 6 away/cruising might get 4. Afraid sign of the times work cost etc
  23. We had free view on the cav with one of those round arials, worked fine if you can see the sky tower, just got tv1 and woody bay rakino, the rv ones I think are simular to skydish so vessels cannot turn,we settled for tv/dvd combo and that was fine.
  24. from fleets 12/15 down to 4 on a good night,time?drink driving??
  25. Join a club,Hmm. yes I can see merit but clubs need to get real on membership fees, most clubs have a period 6/12 months as associate then must become full members or not use the club. But with entry numbers down, you would think along as the yacht can race who cares if club members or not as money still crosses the bar. Being boat less at the moment I could not just justify membership fee as though a boat owner,so clubs need to have a crew membership which entitles to use bar on race days but not eligible to vote?
