  1. Visual watch refers to keeping a proper lookout eyes/radar. what does vhf see?? The problem with vhf at this time of the year,is all the B/S clutter when a cellphone call will do to your mate.
  2. IT ,I think you are incorrect regarding law to keep listening watch on recreational vessels, please show where it is stated for vesels under 20m.
  3. I very rarely had the vhf on unless making a long passage or wanted the weather. In my experience of listening to a mayday call one vessel had no idea where they were and spent time describing to c/g the surrounding area, bet that is not a one off Reminds me of the lady who lost her diver off tuts,if she wasnt waving a tea towel so frantically we would never of turned around,no idea how to use a flare or vhf.
  4. Funny thing this diesel additive, never remembered the old man putting it his launch,300 gallons in the 70s nor when he had his yacht for 8 yrs and he was a marine engineer,so why are we putting it in?to tight to fill tank?

    MNZ on VHF

Over the last week or so. MNZ has been pushing the use of vhf to save lives. They maybe correct to a certain degree."You may not see a vessel but your call on ch16 will be heard" Now the advert shows a upside down dinghy,so presuming MNZ are pushing that they should of had a handheld water proof vhf? www.maritimenz.govt.nz/recreational/safety/communications/vhf Once in the position of the video,I would suggest too late due to height above water unless close inshore? I would of thought a flare be of far more use in that situation? Thoughts.
  6. Where did he buy his diesel from?? additives should be compatible with each other, replace filler cap. We have had water in fuel in some of our trucks that have filled up z truck stops, tanker been later getting to station and pump is suppose to switch off when tank reaches 1000lts due to water table,
  7. More fun to sit and empty a bottle She who must be obeyed, have you got everything??Yes dear,Ok then wheres the meat n vege?luckly only gone gone 1/2 way down river and car keys still in drivers door On return trip ,a week later, asked junior to put rubbish in bin and washing in car,got home to find we had the rubbish.Grr
  8. Am I missing something here, you can sail off around NZ anywhere anytime with most insurance companies you are covered out to the 200 mile zone,nz waters? Could if keen go as far south south as Campbell islands or north of 3 kings, which I suspect would encounter more weather bombs and wave height situations than one sailing up to the islands. So why is cat1 so important to ynz/mnz?? Why do you have to prove offshore experience? If it purely an exercise to save search n rescue costs to the tax payer. why not have an insurance scheme that one needs to take out before venturing offshore??
  9. Ha Ha blue light distracts elephant seals, really! When the elephant seal dives it eye turns the water blue,as blue penetrates deeper in to the water than any other colour helping it to see.
  10. The old Child catcher, evil bugger but there is a use for him today

  15. What a waste, stuff the AC ,our heritage needs to come first,NZ does not make sfa from hosting such events, what is spent to host outways income.
  16. The qms will only or may work when those who own the quota are actively fishing it no sub leasing ie you must own the vessel and be on-board to fish quota
  17. Commercial tip buckets of money in to government until that changes there will be no change.peter goodfelliw Nat president and which major fish Co has he involvement Sanfords
  18. Never mind there will be no fish left shortly /www.newshub.co.nz/home/new-zealand/2018/12/no-prosecutions-yet-from-new-mpi-fishing-boat-camera-trials.html?fbclid=IwAR2jDmWh9BfI2HXdnK8w5koliihJvpY22uTAWaf0bngTLVDPdoa7smgQuLk%20
  19. we jail a poacher but not this guy for manslaughter, doesnt add up. All for catching poachers as they are stealing from all kiwis in an act of selfishness. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=12172600
  20. just top tank up when cleaned out,6 yrs trouble free as tank always over 3/4 full and every 20lts added biocide 10ml,glass bowl always looked clean, never drained it.
  21. The microbes have a very short life but before they die they multiply and produce waste deposits, both of which descend to the bottom of the fuel tank. One bacteria microbe can reproduce more than 7 million microbes in 24 hours. Due to the rate of reproduction and their short lives, the build-up of dead microbes can be quite fast. Any fuel tank with an air pocket will produce condensation when the temperature falls far enough, and is therefore likely to attract these tiny microbes. After a day out on the road, the remaining diesel is warm from the heat of the engine and as the temperature c

  23. Funny you should mention sailing with oldies,1976 Dad teamed up on a yacht and even though were at the backdoor, what I learnt away from the old boy was/is valuable experience.being only 16 at the time put on the foredeck and first experience was changing a terelene sail, socking wet and hank on another. And went back the following weekend for more punishment
  24. The issue is not so much Children not wanting to sail but when they have outgrown the Starling PT Laser etc why they are not progressing in to keelboat crew. Sure there is that keen element on keelboat or trailer sailors like the 5.9 etc for a better word want to be prima donnas but where has joe average gone too??Once finished Kohi, glendowie etc where do they dissapear too?
