Not sure if I'm on board with the "no WOF" argument. The lack of an engineer had SWA to do with the boat running aground. Seems like a bit of excessive book throwing by MNZ - the young deckie, first trip out, was fined $1700. Good way to encourage locals to join the fishing industry - not.

A quick synopsis - boat goes fishing, young deckie does not follow instructions goes to sleep and boat runs aground. MNZ prosecute for not having an engineer on board. WTF? https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/300011815/boat-ran-into-mt-maunganui-as-skipper-and-deckhand-slept

    Bilge + Locker paint

The brushing gelcoat is a good hard-wearing surface, depends on what/how your lockers and bilge are though?
  4. Hmm, have had little or no reaction in Mahurangi/Scott's Landing. Have been asked twice by people walking on the beach - as we load up the dink with a sh*t ton of laundry and shopping - "heading out?". When we answer "nah, washing and shopping, back to the boat, been here 5 weeks", there has been nothing negative. Looking forward to leaving!
  5. My take is that hey were still working through those questions.
  6. Not really on topic but I'm bored. Here's a vid from February. Windy.mp4
  7. Yep, we just sit here and take it, we're 15 tons and it has to be over 30 before we really notice. SW 20-25 at the mo - but the tide just changed......8>(
  8. Where are you? I've got some on the boat - currently Mahurangi
  9. What's the plan for hurricane season? Insurance is a factor I believe? T&T?
  10. Spot on there DP. Anchored in about 30-40 knots, bit of tide too 8<(

  12. Scottie, 2 things: 1. It's an opinion piece, not a scientific paper. 2. It is basically lifted from NZ Geo magazine, so there may well be references in the mag that didn't get shown on the interweb thingy. I think we will all have to confront many issues like this over the coming years. Hopefully we can do it with the same constructive attitude we, as Kiwis, are famous for. Rather than how yacht handicaps are discussed.
  13. Agree. But how do you combat the fishing lobby when they are so invested in the National Party. We need a hero.
  14. We should feel fortunate that our police do their jobs like this
  15. Give Neil at Seafarer a call, he will very likely know the best option. https://www.seafarerinflatables.co.nz/ 021 570 505
  16. Interesting that they have harnesses only and not the current lifejacket/harness. What a difference 9 years makes....

I've gone pretty much of expensive gear. Going back a few years, Malta to Cyprus, raining hard the whole way. Full Musto kit. 20 minutes in the rain and I would be completely saturated. Fortunately my routine going off watch was to leave my Musto kit spread on the saloon floor above the engine room, jump in the shower fully clothed to warm up, strip clothes and put them in the dryer. Sleep. Rinse, repeat. 107' boat though....
  18. In all the interactions I have had with the Police in the last 5 weeks, I have been impressed with their professionalism and communication skills. We are fortunate to be here. Watching, listening and reading the media's output, not so much. My headline was tongue in cheek, FYI 8>)
  19. Seems like someone has taken the ultimate challenge https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/121245710/coronavirus-yachtie-sails-from-marlborough-sounds-to-wellington-during-covid19-lockdown
  20. To clarify that, the aim would be to encourage YNZ to do more than pay lipservice. When was the last time that YNZ asked you, as a member, what your views are on certain issues?
  21. What say the members of this forum construct either a petition or a survey to encourage YNZ to fulfill their natural role. The role that they have positioned themselves to be (and have never been) is a body that represents, and advocates for, all "boaters". This would include obviously their current "performance sailing", but expand to encompass cruising, fishing(?), marina berth holders, and ....(????). They should also have a voice to represent us regarding the environment (I'm thinking antifouling), marine farms and ???? I'd be happy to contribute a bit of time. If we knocked somet
  22. I'd like YNZ to take a more pro-active stance with Maritime NZ and ensure that MNZ receives effective feedback from a yachties point of view. I'd also like to see YNZ have an effective voice when dealing with councils, marina owners and their association, the insurance industry and everybody else that has power over decision making regarding our sport/pastime/passion/profession/livelihood. I'd also like to have Taylor Swift bring me breakfast in bed and I think I have just as much chance of that happening.
  23. I have to say Bailey's are on to it with communication. I got this back today and they quote the insurers: “Thanks for referring this through, Our position is that the clients cover continues but every claim will be assessed (when it can be assessed) in its own circumstances and with New Zealand Governments activity restrictions in mind. The client is covered for usual risks/perils if they were caught out there before the lock down or the vessel is their normal everyday accommodation, i.e. their bubble. We appreciate that the client has been caught in an unfortunate situa

    Turning off AIS

Interesting, I hadn't considered the remote surveillance angle, makes good sense. I'll stop muttering under my breath when around marinas from now on!
  25. Hmmm, I was actually more interested in trying to work out what the hell I'm insured for, but thanks for the response. I'd be keen to see any figures you have but I'm assuming you are just conceptualising? Try these completely opposite concepts: 1. Boat kept on marina and rarely used or maintained. Owner inexperienced, more $$ than sense, boat used solely for week holiday in summer. A disaster waiting to happen. 2. Owner-occupier living aboard. Experienced in all things marine from a lifetime spent on boats. Boat maintained to a high standard at all times. I would not a
