  1. So, Pork Chop has 7 x 12mm halyards. What do you reckon the weight saving would be is you did us a tranche of these laminated replacement? P measurement is about 14m
  2. That’s because the boats are even but have different traits. LRPP are more manoevreable ETNZ have slight straight line speed. When it gets close it will be interesting. Match racing is like that. a worse outcome is that one is clearly superior to the other and that becomes a procession. So I’m grateful that there is some tension, if only at the starts.
  3. It’s only the media that is doing that. It’s impossible to tell until they are racing. Both of them look fast but: KZ 7 was fast and got taken out in the challenger final NzL something was fast in 2007 and lost the final 5-2 the Sanfran challenge was fast and was up 8-1 and we all know how that ended
  4. Another great video revealing details you can’t get from the commentators: what are the grinders doing, aiming for etc.
  5. Essentially describes SA generally. I Generally avoid SA for that reason. It makes even the most vitriolic comments on crew look like a girl guide convention.
  6. Really? I’ll be disappointed. For some reason I seem to like a good sailing regatta. I’m surprised that this site isn’t filled with discussion, analysis, conspiracy that goes with having a world premier sailing event on our door step. this is a sailing forum after all. One has to go to YouTube to get good discussion and it’s mostly with Poms (who are not bleating to much from having been eliminated).
  7. He was in Bermuda for AC 35. I was just listening to him commentate on the challenger final last night. I’m watching it all over again to make the thrill last longer. the coverage was definitely better there.
  8. This YouTube reveals a lot about what is going on under the deck of Prada with its hidden boom.
  9. We were at the Mercs over January and the Westpac helicopter come over and buzzed the bay. Listening to ch16 revealed a boat had set its epirb off but merely thought it was a low battery warning. yep, numpties abound.
  10. IT, I trust your opinion but not enough to visit the TAB with your prognostications.
  11. I’m not a conspiracy theorist normally but it does make you wonder, given how easily Prada outpointed INEOS in the last race yesterday but didn’t on Saturday.
  12. The best tech analysis I’ve found is on this channel: https://youtube.com/c/MozzySails lots of good stuff analyzing the design rule. the most interesting one is on main sails, where ETNZ just might have a big advantage.
  13. I wouldn’t think any of them are blogs merely websites.
  14. We all use VMG as a proxy for VmC in the same way we use gas as a proxy for petrol even though it is a liquid. over time language adapts based on convenience or laziness not accuracy. until about 10 minutes ago I’d never heard of VMC.
  15. Not sure what I mean. I should have said “I sometimes wonder whether there should be more...” and I suppose that does mean enforcement. I’m not advocating for anything to happen was just musing out loud. I sometimes wonder about the desirability of anyone getting in a boat without any ideas and heading out and causing “issues.” There are a lot of threads on here of people wanting to know how to get started in yachting but a lot more buy a boat of some description and just go. Also a fair few people get prosecuted when it goes badly wrong. I just hate being on the wron
  16. Oh. That’s surprising but sort of makes sense. Was there notice issued to that effect (that I missed)?
  17. It’s not just jet skis. I had two situations in the Gulf during the last week. One was a launch and the other an enormous sailing cat (which did a beautiful gybe of their Code 0 after we bore away to let them past, so clearly are experienced). Also saw another showing no interest in giving way to Prada so Prada had to bear away and go around them. I’m becoming a proponent of more regulation out there.

    New to sailing

The old kiwi mentality of getting out and doing it counts for a lot. But there is a lot that can go wrong and mistakes that get made. So I always recommend for late starter newbies to also join a boat that races regularly, as crew. It’s always about time on the water observing what is happening in different conditions. This also helps build knowledge about what features of a boat would suit you. And then read read read. There is so much to be gained from reading about other people’s experiences.
  19. Cheers for that. Everyone. I didn’t realize there were so many options. I’m confident I can make something work now.
  20. I’ll give it a go and let you know so that we can establish a new practice.
  21. Do you mean between the old store takeaways and the general store? And you can get ashore (and back again obviously)? Sounds like a good option.
  22. Cheers for this. Probably didn’t make it clear that main thing is being able to get alongside somewhere as the girls will have, well, a LOT of stuff and our tender is a Takacat which is a bit damp for ferrying sleeping bags etc. I’ll get in touch with the yacht club I didn’t know about this.
  23. I have to pick up the family and reprovision, water etc on 13th January. what’s the best way to do this? The marina says they’re fully booked. Is there a temporary berth/wharf nearby? Perhaps someone has a 10 or 12 m berth I could borrow for an afternoon at Opua on 13th January? Pork Chop draws 2.5m ta
  24. Total downer. Similar thing happened to me straight after our White Island race. Was having a snooze at 5am when a clown with a old wooden trawler clunked into our prod. It’s probably stronger than yours as no damage and he couldn’t give a toss as he was more interested in getting out fishing.
