  1. Found this AIS map on anarchy.... Also what is meant by “it was not on the entire race”? Off the entire race or off some of the time?

  4. Looking forward to this race, last year was a blast (literally) shortened course due to a pretty decent amount of wind. Heaps of boats and social around the bbq after.
  5. I guess if it’s a class race and they are all racing as “sports boats” then it’s a fair race. But if a TS16 is in a mixed fleet and they are hiking out, even two well built sailors on a high pie diet are not likely to get line honours. Surely the advantage wouldn’t be worth not having a handicap? I’m new to racing, just trying to get my head around all the rules, I appreciate the replies.
  6. Thanks Mattm, but how does 14.2 not stop that? Unless they are racing as a “sports boat” then as I understand it they are not racing with a handicap?

  9. Is it legal to sit on the rail with legs dangling over the side in a category C race trailer yacht race? The safety rules say nothing outside of lifelines,unless complying with RR49.2 which says a competitor siting facing outwards with his waist inside the lower lifeline may lean out over the top lifeline. What does that mean for your legs?
  10. I emailed the coastguard and asked if they have DSC on board the boats, and if so will they respond to a DSC emergency alert? The response: “To the best of our knowledge, most Coastguard Rescue Vessels VHF radios do have DSC. So if a CG Vessel received an alert from another vessel, they would advise the Operations Centre, who would then respond accordingly.” I know they don’t officially monitor and so it can’t be relied on, but the extra safety net a DSC gives is most definitely worth it.
  11. That’s really cool. I have a Garmin echo map 50dv, I didn’t know it was possible to do that. It’s not a 2000 but I didn’t know about 183. Cheers I.T I will order the bits and add to the winter maintenance list.

I have to do it on my Lowrance every time I turn it on. I would like to connect a gps input one day but on my little trailer yacht it is a lower priority. Hopefully my Garmin can do the Nmea thing, looks the easiest way. In saying that the more of us that do have full functioning DSC the better our safety net will be. That’s why I don’t like

  14. Im no radio tech, but it’s pretty basic simple to to turn off that beeping, just go into menu and select the gps simulate function. They are not dangerous, only the un-educated operator makes it dangerous.

  18. My fore beam goes into glassed tubes. I had to replace it because the rivets had reacted with the Ali under the seagull striker (they used stainless rivets and also no separation)
  19. I moved my GBE to whangamata yesterday and saw twisted sisters. It made me curious, I knew it was a Tennant design but didn’t know the model. Sadly it’s still in poor condition, it didn’t seem to have much of a mussel farm but instead the owner has diversified into lichen farming. The whole things covered in it. It looks like an awesome boat, shame it’s being left to die.

The passengers of the car are able to recognise the level of risk and can influence the driver, where as the boat passengers or air craft passengers for example may not be aware of the risk and assume the skipper or pilot know what they are doing. Hence I think that skippers and pilots for that matter, have more responsibility than a driver of a car and legislation should reflect that. But yes I also agree that the size of the fines don’t appear to be consistent or fair.

  22. Sourced a beam from Sparloft industries. Then Me and crew replaced the beam a few weeks ago. Was super easy, kept the boat floating at the beach, slid out the old and in with the new. Looking forward to putting up a bit more sail and having some fun!

  25. I live in Hamilton, have a GBE and would like to bring it around from Tauranga. I don’t want to pay for a marina berth. What and where are the mooring options? South end of Auckland so I can avoid most of the traffic. I’m familiar with Clevedon river option, and know of the Kawakawa bay moorings but I think they are a bit exposed.
