  2. Have you seen the website for wooden boats in NZ? https://waitematawoodys.com/
  3. I'm Storm Fantasy, that's public knowledge, unlike some anon here. I've got nothing to hide. He was certainly going more than 5 knots. There were no boats to leeward. It wasn't in the harbour. There were no other boats within 1 nm or more. Accuracy on the GPS coordinates comes from putting the cursor in google maps and copy and pasting.
  4. Roughly -36.5875555,174.7893479 Expecting people whose skill level you don't know to hold their course could put you both in danger.
  5. Sailing back to Auckland from Mahurangi yesterday morning we were overtaken by a centre cockpit SV XXXXXXX (I estimate 50 foot or above). He came alongside within three metres and then cut over our bow leaving 3-5 metres. I would have had no trouble with his behaviour if it was a race, but it wasn't. And he had no idea of my skill, or lack of it, in keeping a straight course or taking evasive action. I'm surprised he didn't call for me to luff up and tack away. If anything had gone wrong it would have been a mess.
  6. I hear what you're saying Bogan and can see that a small light boat might get away with a shorter scope. However the potential is definitely there for bumps and fouling of my marker if they anchor inside my scope. If they foul my marker they are that much closer to fouling my anchor. It happened to me a couple of years ago when someone anchored too close to me. Great big fat stupid launch it was. BTW how many people use an anchor alarm on the GPS?
  7. I hear what you're saying about non-weld marine grade sheet. But my Parkercraft has welds and rivets. ??
  8. A mil is a measurement that equals one-thousandth of an inch, or 0.001 inch. Most human hair is One-thousandth of inch, or 0.001 inch. The most common size in the thickness rating for plastic sheeting is 6 mil. This is 6-thousandths of an inch, or 0.006 inch.
  9. I've been meaning to rig an anchor marker too. I'll make it a RULE (/Joke). It would make crowded anchorages much easier and safer for everyone. Don't forget to put your name on the float.
  10. Depending on the size of the problem, superglue works very well. There are different superglues, some more runny than others these days. The problem is the flexing which occurs which will eventually rip off the superglue. Best is a good aluminium welder, but they are few and far between.
  11. Knot Me... maybe You might want to talk to your lawyer about your responsibilities under NZ OSH legislation. I think you misunderstand OSH. Unfortunately OSH is such a popular whipping boy that there's lots of misinformation around.
  12. I have a heavy anchor and put down plenty of chain. If I get it wrong I hope someone would save my boat.
  13. MPI is pretty much a tool of the industry these days. Unfortunately in modern NZ "regulatory capture" is a feature of our system.
  14. I'm not aware of recreational fishers trawling the depths (yes for the shallows with scallap dredging). I'm with ChrisC, I'd be happy to see a complete ban while stocks recover, or expanded protected areas.

  16. I'd move. And for the safety of their boat I'd go aboard and let out more chain and warp. I'd document what I'd done in my log. If anything later went wrong and they tried to sue, I could point to my log and show I'd acted in a seaman-like, public spirited and responsible manner - the same way as if it had been a good friend's boat.
  17. Cut in half and with a lid they make wonderful compost bins. If you have the balance of dry/wet right and turn compost with a garden fork they make the best compost bins ever.
  18. Joanna and I were bending on our genoa with refurbished UV strips to the roller furling foil. Very grateful for the lack of breeze. Cost us $417
  19. I blame Haines Hunter. Have you seen their latest TV ad with a boat crossing the wake of another?
  20. Single rope would be fine if rigged correctly. Headsail sheet may have caught on something. We all take risks.
  21. My overseas boat licence required me to sit an exam. It did a lot to reduce my ignorance. You should see the exam you have to sit in Japan!!
  22. The primary question being: why doesn't NZ have boat licences? Demerits for idiots like these and the fools hooning through diving area would make them learn. On Saturday in Auckland Harbour a plea to slow down came over Channel 16 from the authorities to idiots hooning around the harbour. Some of them came too bloody close to me too. And the week before, some idiot decided the best way to avoid a collision was to stand on the gas and hoon a few metres in front of my bow.
  23. It's fine to express yourself Clipper, but use of that language is unacceptable and demeans you and readers.
  24. https://www.yit.nz/anchorages Very sheltered from all but east quadrant winds. Anchor in 3-5 metres off the beach in the middle of the bay, good holding on sandy bottom.
