  1. Fish, you've been warned before about personal attacks. The fact that I object to racism and misogyny is irrelevant to the science of sea level rise. During the last deglaciation sea level rose by 20 m in 200 years. ie 1 m each 10 years, 10 cm per year!!! That's what the science tells us. The science also tells us that this time the change is happening more rapidly than last time. Here's how I use the word "science":
  2. Wheels. Do you not accept the science that the sea level is rising?
  3. Something colourful to think about and brighten up our lives.
  4. It makes the world a better place when people care Chris.
  5. So now we're dissing people whose accents are different. Sounds racist to me.
  6. Muzza, how would you do your prop in those days? Now?
  7. I support the trial. It's aimed at cultural change which is what we need. Imagine the outcome if all the energy you guys are expending here went into lobbying for a proper set of rules which defined various PFDs, so that when you actually needed a LIFE JACKET it would save your life. http://kmccready.wordpress.com/2014/01/15/lifejackets-lifejackets-and-sissies/
  8. I always contact the Harbour Master and they'll pass on the message to the owner. Harbourmaster@AKLcouncil.govt.nz Phone 362 0397
  9. Alan should be able to calculate the AVS or be able to help.
  10. It's time to bring back public grids and allow a wipe down. The policy of dismantling them and discouraging their use was always misguided in my opinion.
  11. I think it's pretty clear it's not an OSH reaction. It's a political reaction due to the publicity. Those in power can always find a bit of legislation to support what they want. Or they find compliant legal advice from a friendly Crown Solicitor which all other lawyers would tell you is crap. Or they just act illegally. I wouldn't be reluctant to keep pushing them and defending our rights.
  12. I've sailed with 4 guys on a 40 to cross an ocean. Plenty of room and 4 was a good number for watchkeeping on a long voyage. I'd want to know the AVS too!!
  13. For land navigation anywhere in the world I use an offline app called maps.me In their last update they switched to defaulting to google services for location. Not much use for an offline app. I was able to disable the google services from within the maps.me app. Now it just talks to the satellites. Wondering if a similar thing is happening with OpenCPN.
  14. On the Spirit of NZ, it's the morning job of the cadet under supervision of the Third Mate to calculate daily tidal flows for where the ship will be. I'm sure they'd be happy to share the recipe and adjustments they may make for deviations from predictions. And I'm sure you know about the occasional tidal flow notations on the paper charts. I'm assuming ECDIS systems have the same?
  15. I know John. And when the electronics go down??
  16. Paper charts if not updated are not fit for purpose. Buoys and beacons change and so does positioning of lights and cables and and and. If you ended up in court you'd be mincemeat trying to prove you were a competent skipper with that attitude. Sorry to be blunt but I think it needs saying.
  17. I pop them (not just inflate), then leave the under a box of books overnight.
  18. It's a pain in the butt but make sure you keep your paper charts updated as you've probably been taught.
  19. I test and service my own and fail to see, as long as you demonstrate your methods to the surveyor, why that shouldn't suffice. Come to think of it though, what's their lifetime, does anyone know? How many cycles of inflation are they designed for?
  20. I didn't use the word Government. But when I do I mean the politicians who have a parliamentary majority which allows them to change laws. They (in this case the National Party and its mates who they governed with) passed a law relaxing the building code to such a ridiculous level that we ended up with leaky buildings. They were warned at the time (we'd already seen it in South Africa from memory). So I don't think we can blame the public service for leaky buildings or the inspectors who were forced to work with the shonky code. The buck stops with the Government.
  21. Check your facts. Leaky homes is a direct result of Building Act 1991 introduced by Nationals I do believe. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leaky_homes_crisis
  22. I imagine the builder pays for council inspections? Why wouldn't the industry offer to pay for more inspectors to meet their marginal cost of waiting? I must say I was horrified by the recommendations of the Rules Reduction Taskforce saying builders should sign off their own work.
  23. Speaking of building supplies prices, did you hear the RNZ report a couple of days ago? Lots of anti-competitive practices make our stuff three times the price it should be. Some people import windows from Germany because it's cheaper, then the supply companies blackball them. My guess is that the government has deliberately run down the part of the public service that used to be responsible for bringing these cowboys to book.
  24. 3 points 1. I said it first, nah nah re irrelevant posts. My posts were in response to the irrelevancies. 2. Apologies to Coastguard re my membership voting rights. Members can vote at the regional level which then appoints people to the national level 3. I take your point Steve about the horizontal, but eye level is metres above that and dolphins were also clearly breaking the surface. Do you think you would have seen them?
  25. Isn't "would not have seen" in this context equal to not keeping a proper lookout? When I'm out on the water I see heaps of stuff and I'm pretty sure I would have seen a massive pod of dolphins crossing in front of me.
