  1. They register your boat in their ships register, it is called standerschien , apparently it is accepted for inwards clearance almost everywhere, but it is not the same as german registration and so does not require residency. And your home port is still where you keep the boat , no lies required. One of the things you need to send is proof of ownership, so it is not just a ownership certificate nor is it a virtual club, I am giving it a try anyway.
  2. trans ocean a german club does 4 years reg for 18 euro plus 40 e a year membership, I am going through the process at the moment. No survey required.
  3. When we lived aboard in Aus our dog was great never weed on board. But one time during really bad weather in Moreton Bay we coudn,t get ashore for 2 days, the dog hung on, finally the wind dropped and we moved to Tangalooma to anchor and go ashore. as I was on the foredeck setting the anchor I felt something warm on my foot, he was quietly weeing on my leg! When we did get ashore he cocked his leg and rested it on a log and weed constantly for what seemed like 2 minutes.
  4. looking for a smaller gennaker or possibly spinnaker to buy only for cruising so doesn,t need to be brand new, upto around 12m luff but smaller is ok for a 38ft wharram cat, thanks..dave
  5. Out from the haulout area , around 2 metre depth at high tide , dries from half tide or so. Annual fees to council 67$ , and you maintain your own lines and anchor system, Has had a 46 ft cat on it before, tied fore and aft facing to the south. Very convenient to the city. I no longer use it so will sell for 700 or rent by negotiation dave 0210764371
  6. pretty sure that some nz citizens own foreign reg yachts and depart nz perhaps they are not then technically a nz owned ship in part 6 2 c of the rules because they are registered in another country
  7. a 23 ft wharram cat [similar to the one that crossed the tasman recently] was and perhaps still is the smallest cat to circumnavigate,, smaller boat , smaller problems particularly when sailing solo.
  8. I wouldn,t own a boat if a marina unless super cheap was the only option but if it was as cheap and as well located as my pole mooring then a marina would be ok.
  9. Looks like a very hefty premium to me. I have read of owners of electric drive boats that have gone back to diesel after finding that the lack of range was too limiting.
  10. You would hope so, but what I mean is you could drop your boat off at a boat builders and say just fix everything that needs fixing and come back when they have finished, or you could just use the boat for a few years worth of holidays and gradually tidy it up along the way. It also depends on the boat , an expensive production boat deserves a professional quality paint job and anything less would devalue it, where a plywood Wharram catamaran can be painted on a beach with a roller and look just fine.
  11. Boating can be cheap or expensive, you can repaint yourself with a brush or pay 30 k for a fancy sprayjob.... I have had over 20 multis since 1981 and my annual cost of ownership including the cost of the boat I have now are still less than zero ....... and I have never paid to haul a boat out of the water yet, although I will have to pay next time..... There is a big production cat recently listed on TM for under 200k , a couple of years ago it would have been 300 plus ,,, Still there is a good chance that that sort of thing will be even less in the next few years, and the 200 left in
  12. The reality is that you can buy a boat for around 30 k or less that is fine to cruise the Gulf or even further afield if you are a little more adventurous or less risk adverse and prepared to avoid cat one rules. Not too many workers that are able to spend 250 k on what is an unnecessary liability with ongoing expenses. If it was just me sailing I could go out and buy a little trailer sailer for 3k that would take me to great barrier easily enough and cost very little to own, or a bit more for a GRt Barrier Express that would be a blast to sail but miserable to sleep inside of. And wh
  13. we went swimming in a hot water creek between rotorua and taupo today , started snowing while we were soaking in the hot water,,, awesome...no I,m not making this up even though I don't have photos
  14. sailing from bundaberg to nz I put a ring of way points around middleton reef about 50 miles off , that is the only obstacle but plenty of boats have hit it and if you don,t zoom in on your charts they will show nothing often
  15. now averaging 9 t0 10 so should be go
  16. a possibility of delays or postponement due to light winds
  17. a seawater washdown pump and hose in or near the cockpit is a good thing if you have a fire in your cabin. If the cabin is full of smoke you don't really want to go in there . To get close enough to use an extinquisher may not be possible because of thick smoke . With a hose you have a chance of fighting the fire from a safe position in fresh air by directing water through any hatches etc. Be prepared to abandon ship if necessary. An auto extinquisher in the engine room is an excellent idea as KM has said. Plus if you sleep on your boat you should have at least 1 smoke alarm in each
  18. I just lashed it every 600mm or so drilled small holes in the gunnel and used thin cord, adds a lot of bouyancy if the dinghy should get swamped too. Hose was free , valve was free so total cost was not much at all. sealed it by simply folding and clamping the ends with ally and 2 bolts.
  19. i used 70mm red fire hose to make a fender for my dinghy , folded the ends and put a car valve in and inflated to about 3 psi , no leaks and a 5m long fender
  20. If you are thinking of going through Torres strait in the next 3 months the boat will need to be good at punching to windward, south of Aus may be the be better option or wait until later in the season. We went the opposite direction in May and turning around and going back would have been very difficult. We had fairly constant east or SE at 20 to 25 knots.
  21. interesting [good], that races are shortened to fit the time slots this time, if that had been the case last time we would have been defending not challenging now? iirc one of the races was stopped when we were well ahead in light winds as it was going to take too long to finish, and then we lost from 8 1 to 8 9
  22. yep packaging is a big problem , especially if you live on a boat or in a place without anywhere to dispose of it. We built a small house recently and managed to use some of the polystyrene packaging from the kitchen etc as extra insulation in some of the walls. In a lot of places it is just burnt.
  23. or maybe some of the big mining or oil companys like shell or bp would like be seen doing their bit for saving the planet, isn,t most of the plastic hydro carbon based after all?
  24. greenpeace needs to convince the japanese government, that to win friends and influence people they should announce that they will no longer hunt and kill whales for scientific or any other purposes but instead will convert their whaling factory ships into plastic recycling ships with the harpoon boats collecting all the rubbish , rubbish goes in one end and toyota and yamaha parts come out the other. and if the japanese don,t want to do it then greenpeace should raise money and set up one boat to do it,as an example, i,m sure they would get a lot of support and volunteers prepared to a
  25. looks like a good place for a spot of beachcombing
