US warship tech causes collision

Recommended Posts

"This unplanned shift caused confusion in the watch team, and inadvertently led to steering control transferring to the Lee Helm Station without the knowledge of the watch team," the report found. "The CO had only ordered speed control shifted. Because he did not know that steering had been transferred to the Lee Helm, the Helmsman perceived a loss of steering."

At this point, everyone on the bridge thought there had been a loss of steering. In the commotion that ensued, the commanding officer and bridge crew lost track of what was going on around them. Sanchez ordered the engines slowed, but the lee helmsman only slowed the port (left) throttle, because the throttle controls on-screen were not "ganged" (linked) at the time as the result of the switch-over of control. The ship continued to turn uncontrolled to port—putting the ship on a collision course with the Liberian-flagged chemical carrier Alnic MC.

all those people on the bridge

watching the complex clusterBuck unfold

due to their inability to

- do what they're told

- understand what they're doing

- understand the complexities of the system

seems they need the apple software team

to redesign their systems controls

for simplicity and a better graphic interface

swipe right - go right?

I think it also shows the stupidity in making systems to "techy". Why have new vessels gone to such complex systems when a simple Wheel and Trottle control does the job simply and more robustly. And these new systems are not just found on Navy vessels. All the new Ships seem to have this kind of helm station now. OK, so they don't actually need a wheel or throttle as such, but a track ball to steer a ship?? And the need to have to switch over various tasks to different Consoles??
IMO of course, there should never be any need for sophisticated training to helm a Navy Vessel. They are not thinking far enough ahead for a situation of if the vessel is hit and those trained to helm it are taken out. Anybody needs to be able to control the ship.

Training AND systems issue. Why can, if you try to steer from a "non active" helm station, the system simply prompt you with "helm station not active. Station XX is active. Would you like to take helm control?"

A basic Navico AP does this on a multi station setup, like a fly bridge launch. Surely a Naval vessel could, and should, be made this simple??

They crashed their ship and killed there mates cause someone pushed the wrong button in a software interface...

Think there might be some learnings in that somewhere.

Wonder if the US navy will learn them.

Speaking of will they learn, seems not. I was actually reading about USS Vincennes last night in Robert Fisk's book 'The Great War for Civilization'.

Combine trigger happy morons (Captain Will Rogers III) with poor training and "failing to reset his signaling equipment" and trying 23 times while pressing the wrong button (Scott Lustig) you either kill people, get yourselves killed or start wars.

Best solution is mutual disarmament and agreed inspections.

erice the beloved leader has offered unconditional talks. The other beloved leader has refused. Don't believe everything you read in the Murdoch dominated news. Speaking of rogue states, my guess is the the US Empire has flouted many many more UN resolutions than probably any other nation on earth. That would be a nice little research project for someone.

which part of

"we will never give up our nuclear weapons"

is unconditional?

North Korea says it won’t give up nuclear weapons and that entire U.S. mainland is within firing range

According to reports from Amnesty International and Committee from Human Rights, by 2017 an estimated 200,000 prisoners[4] are incarcerated in camps that are dedicated to political crimes, and they are also subjected to forced labor, physical abuse, and execution.[5]

Beloved leaders of all types say stupid things before they sit down and talk. The job of people like me when I was in the game was to get them talking. The job of people generally is to stay calm, well-informed and strive for objectivity and truth.

so we should sit by idly

- why they starve + slaughter their own population

i don't know

if you've got a link to a respected news source where they discuss american atrocities against north koreans please share it

the country is basically a brainwashed basketcase

it took 10? years for west germany to reasonably successfully repair the damage communism had caused to people + infrastructure in the east after it collapsed

estimates in cost + time for south korea to do the same with far more impoverished, mentally + materially, north korea are apparently so much higher (entire generations) that containment is the only viable option until they internally collapse as well
