Why have new vessels gone to such complex systems when a simple Wheel and Trottle control does the job simply and more robustly. And these new systems are not just found on Navy vessels. All the new Ships seem to have this kind of helm station now. OK, so they don't actually need a wheel or throttle as such, but a track ball to steer a ship?? And the need to have to switch over various tasks to different Consoles?? IMO of course, there should never be any need for sophisticated training to helm a Navy Vessel. They are not thinking far enough ahead for a situation of if the vessel is hit and those trained to helm it are taken out. Why can, if you try to steer from a "non active" helm station, the system simply prompt you with "helm station not active. Station XX is active. Would you like to take helm control?" A basic Navico AP does this on a multi station setup, like a fly bridge launch. Surely a Naval vessel could, and should, be made this simple?? Quote Link to post Share on other sites

I was actually reading about USS Vincennes last night in Robert Fisk's book 'The Great War for Civilization'. Combine trigger happy morons (Captain Will Rogers III) with poor training and "failing to reset his signaling equipment" and trying 23 times while pressing the wrong button (Scott Lustig) you either kill people, get yourselves killed or start wars.
