Battleship 100
A 79-year-old sailor is attempting to sail solo from Kerry to New Zealand in a boat he has built himself. The Swedish sailor and writer, known as Yrvind, departed from the Blasket Islands this morning and hopes to complete the epic voyage in just over 300 days. | https://bit.ly/2H6tAxc
Island Time 1,235
Well, yes. But he knows what hes getting himself into. Average speed 1.24 knots so far - he needs to double that or he'll run out of food. eccentric, for sure.
MarkMT 68
A decent number of well-known companies sponsoring him... http://www.yrvind.com/sponsors.html
Battleship 100
Certainly makes Swirly World look like a luxury liner, I think he might struggle.
Island Time 1,235
I must admit it doesn't look seaworthy to me. Is it even self righting???
erice 732
Yrvind plans to spend most of his time below deck in a 3ft x 10ft x 2ft water-tight cabin. The unique vessel will be propelled by 4sqm of sail and will be steered by rope-operated twin rudders
philstar 61
The good thing is that he won't get past the north sea. He won't be our SAR problem.
waikiore 399
As I mentioned it makes swirly look great, I believe Sven will get sick of not being able to go for a walk, this will give stir crazy a whole new meaning, he was still jogging recently and the diet and no exercise will take its toll. Black Panther 1,589
He has also designed the coolest sextant I've come across
Priscilla II 392
Never trust a man with a clean workshop. The yellow submarine could well turn out to be a self euthanising machine.
Battleship 100
The rudders are huge. He's done a sh*t load more than most of us so who am I to judge.
philstar 61
There's a good chance he'll die of old age before he gets down here. It does make Swirly look rather racy and seaworthy though doesn't it.
Priscilla II 392
Crikey she is a bit of a tip truck.
Fish 0
Hasn't he forgotten the keel? Or is there a second yellow submarine and he's going to strap them together to make a cat? He's got all the stability of a kayak at the moment. Wobbling around and heeling over on a flat lake. Is he planning on drifting to Dunedin?
waikiore 399
Yes his plan is a controlled drift, of course for the price of the (donated) materials in her he could have purchased two reactors and be sailing in the Bay of Islands already. But no one would come to a lecture about that. I will buy him a drink if he makes it, I fear stability will become the issue.
Fish 0
I will buy him a drink if he makes it, I fear stability will become the issue. Absolutely, I'd buy that man a beer, if he makes it. Its important to let people chase their dreams, even if they are doomed to failure. When you say you fear stability will become the issue, are you referring to righting moment stability, or mental stability....?
erice 732
some of his other boats seem to have relied on a dropdown centreboard in the bow https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=Yrvind&safe=off&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=FmTZFcMqvaSw_M%253A%252COE5TesCi7zNFpM%252C_&usg=__2N9laiGvZ11icRLxk1oWvl1MNe8%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjH2Nro-LDbAhUIO7wKHUejB-kQ_h0IjQEwDA#imgrc=M6afX4VxV-1_ZM: his website http://www.yrvind.com/photos/
philstar 61
The Bris boats actually look vaguely ok. I think he's lost it Exlex is going to be his coffin
Black Panther 1,589
This boat has chine runners invented by Matt Leyden.
