They lynch mob bagging coutts and butterworth for going to alinghi even though tnz had told them they weren't worth the money they were getting. Has anyone ever been so wrong?
led by Murray deaker who can be forgiven because....Murray deaker....
but also a few yachting industry leaders, sailors that I won't name because it's an embarrassment on their good deeds elsewhere for yachting
My understanding is the reason Alinghi took the cup to Valencia aside from financial gain was that the Deed states the racing must be held "on the sea, on the arm of the sea, or one which combines both". Just sayin. Switzerland did not meet the criteria. Just sayin.
You can be sure that when they declined the $99m they did so knowing they could do better elsewhere - it wouldn’t be a blind decision.
But if they can’t get enough extra funding overseas then they might be forced to rethink and stay at home with a scaled-down plan after all. But that’s probably Plan C or D right now.
And I have some sympathy for that. After all, there are many many flaws with a free-market model the likes of which we are seeing play out here. But nobidy said it would be clean & perfect.
And the argument about “halo effect for NZ” is simply a reasonable negotiating tactic for TNZ (or any other team) negotiating a fee. The govt / donor of that fee can choose to believe it or disregard it. We’re talking big boys’ & girls’ games here.
And of course the reality is that when we are talking about multi-million dollar games like this there are no such things as “implied contracts
That would be a great idea - if it was 2001.
If you want to see TP52s go and watch their World Champs or Super Series.
But don’t try to put the AC genie back into the bottle.
