  2. Farr 38 mains are big so anything you can do to reduce friction and convert manpower to purchase is good, I would use 8mm Dyneema especially if racing. Its cheaper, runs free and easy to use. The only reason people use ships hawsers for mains is because that's how it was always done and rope wasnt strong. Best upgrade you can do for the main.

  3. A fray is a time-consuming repair and it is really tough to do on a used/tough rope. And like you say it will turn into disaster at the worst possible time if you don't repair/replace it. $2.30/m for a new 12mm double braid using the link above. And maybe you could go 10mm?

Personally having put my boat through cat 3 and now cat 2 with a highly respected boat builder and mentor as my inspector I have found it a really good exercise, they challenge you on details you may have missed and often help with practical solutions to achieving the certification and a safe vessel, I would really recommend anyone using their boat outside the gulf racing or cruising to put their vessel through cat 3 at least once. from reading Fagans books he has some quirky approaches to repairs and did mention in a previous book that he had re built the skeg himself. that said he

  7. It's still been one of the few offshore racers that an average sailor can afford a boat to compete in, although this is changing more recently. Performance wise, a modern smaller offshore racer is considerably faster than an old 45 ftr. Provided the whole race is not to weather!
