  1. ‘Appel, though, said she modified her sailboat, called the Sea Nymph, by adding six tons of fibreglass to the hull to make it thicker and heavier’ From stuff /AP article. Anyone with some boat building knowledge want to comment on that? Even at 15m (boat length) that’s 400kg/m of extra fibreglass. What?!?!? Why? How?
  2. I did wonder what on earth they were in about there Mark, I mean, sounds like Luna Rossa are fairly keen for a start.... Fish ???? ‘And if you won’t let me have the ball I’ll get another, ‘better’ ball and start my own game at the same time as yours so everyone comes to play with me not you!’
  3. Wonder how he will bias the rules to make sure he wins this one, seen as his best effort didn’t come close in Bermuda. https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-sports/98003060/oracle-owner-poised-to-announce-world-series-of-sailing--report

    12 volts?

12.4 while running a tillerpilot for some time is likely still quite good. As erice said, a 12v (wet lead acid) battery will sit at about 12.7 fully charged at rest. The 'at rest' part is why voltage is a bad reference, if you have just charged it might read high, if you have just had / do have a draw it will read lower than it's resting voltage. You need to stop all current draws and let the battery sit, for a length of time depending on the size of recent current draws, for the voltage to stabilise through the battery, then take a reading. Not so easy while sailing on AP. Get a battery monit

    Gas Detector

Do you mean LPG sensor or co? Either way, definitely the house bank.
  6. It can be melted with MEK solvent, can't vouch for what might happen to the paint underneath though, maybe try on a small patch carefully before going alll out.....
  7. Because it is designed to be that way, with a tube from the outlet into the high point of the tank. Normal LPG cylinders are designed to be upright - no tube.
  8. I'm not sure it's a great idea. I shake the one for the home BBQ when it's nearly empty, puts liquid out through the reg instead of gas, which boils off in the hose giving higher pressure = bigger flame, wasn't too out of control with just the odd splash of gas, not sure having a full tank on its side, particularly on a hot day would be a good idea. Also there is something about the burst disk needing to be at the top so it vents gas not liquid if it bursts too. Imagine that in a boat fire, a fountain of liquid LPG being sprayed around, I'm sure a hillbilly has filmed that happening and put it
  9. Looks like he hasn't made any effort to change the designer / launch date mistake. Perhaps the correct info is that, in 1990, it had a custom new keel built, which was designed by Farr and built by Franklins, and the seller has confused that with the boats launch date and designer. 2.8m is a deep keel.
  10. Not sure I follow your thoughts there wheels. Are you saying if you take an alloy framed 1000w solar panel (assuming 100% efficient) say 30mm thick, an eqivilant volume of fuel has 13 times more energy? What if you left the panel in the sun for 13 hours? And yes, panels are not and likely will not soon be 100% efficient, so it might be more like 30 hours say, but I'd imagine most boats looking at deck storing fuel wouldn't be using that fuel for a week or two until they have used their main tanks anyway. What happens when the solar panel is in the sun for 7, or for that matter 30 days?
  11. Looks like the chrome finish is coming off? I doubt having them re chromed would be worth it, I'd say replace them is the best option if that is the case.
  12. I know a Ross 830 top sides paint job done on the mainland a couple of months ago cost 6.5k odd, including all prep, removing the old paint completely, fairing etc. and removing and refitting the boarding platform. If KM was including painting the decks, including sorting out non skid areas and all the fairing that would be required on the decks of a race boat etc, that would take substantially longer, plus antifoul, it could come to that sort of money, especially done at Auckland prices....
  13. I don't disagree with your point Frank, you would need to find quite a good deal offshore for it to work out, and a boat in good nick that has been regularly used also, if your only aim is a profit. But I do wonder how quoting the illiterate rantings of the banished 'OC' help make your point? I never could, and apparently still can't, string 4 words together to make even part of a useable sentence.
  14. YNZ have been approached, although I think it should be proven that the inspector was right in taking them. Might call EPA tomorrow and ask. Their site repeats, 'if you have any questions, contact us', so why not....
  15. Well you did better than I did, I expected there to be a list, but couldn't find it, I'd happily spend a little time going through it if I could find the damn thing. I agree, the permit application form should be easy to find, and I suspect the f it was there intention to have so many boats / ships / planes fill it in, it would be very easy to find, and total common knowledge. I'm sure this inspector must have it wrong too.
  16. Beat me to it. Not declare them, but arrange, in advance, from the EPA, a permit to bring them in. At least according to these particular customs guys. Every cruising boat, every ship, every plane arriving into the country should be doing this you think?
  17. From: http://www.customs.govt.nz/features/prohibited/imports/Pages/default.aspx Purpose of prohibition: New Zealand has strict controls on the importation of explosives. Import permits for all explosives, including fireworks, are issued by the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and must be presented to Customs. The range of explosives includes items such as: Fireworks. Detonators. Gunpowder. Smokeless powders. TNT. Propellants. Igniters. Safety fuses. Flares. Model rocket engines. Solar regulators

I'm not sure you follow why one would shut down. The reg with the highest voltage set point wins, not the highest amp output. For example, say you have a 20w panel with a reg set at 14.6v, and a bank of 400w panels with a reg set at 14.4. As soon as the 20 watt panels' reg hits voltage higher than 14.4, the 400 watt banks' reg will turn off. You will only be getting max of 20 watts of charge, even though you have another 400 watts sitting there in full sun.
  19. I have seen a couple of masts where people have tried similar ideas, with varying levels of non succsessful results. I'm not sure about the 'ignore the wires' part. They should be in a conduit, if so, you will be lucky if the bog mix seals completely around the conduit (normally an approximately 1"od alloy tube riveted to the inside of the mast). If you don't have a conduit for the wires, again you would be lucky if the bog seals around each wire, but secondly, you will be condemning yourself to pulling the mast out and removing the whole mess you you need to run a new wire in the mast. If yo
  20. Maybe on a nice day, not so much in the conditions you are likely to need it. I had a 7.5m 600kg sport boat with very low windage, a 5hp 2 stroke pushed it at 6+ knots easy in light wind, motoring into 30 knots of wind it would be lucky to do 2 knots in flat water with no tide, I imagine in a heavy 30 foot scooner with relativly high windage you would be luck to make headway into 20 knots with flat sea.
  21. We would all like no greater responsibility than pointlessly sailing around all day, we all have a love of sailing, what makes you a worthy cause for people to delay their ambitions to go to work so they can give you money? Also, reading your other thread, I would think you should not use your motor until you fix the diesel pump issue and do an oil change.

    Fender Material

Buy / Aquire an old inflatable dinghy with the floor ripped out. Remove the transom and floor completely and your done? I'm assuming you mean so you can take the zephyr as a dinghy behind a keeler, but don't want the zephyr to bump the keeler when it's not being sailed?

    Rigid vangs

I just brought a r830 with one the like SD linked to. Will be a few weeks u til I can use it in anger to report on it, but previous owner seemed happy with it, he installed one on his last 2 boats, both 830's.
  24. I watched a doco on a couple of young Norwegian guys a few years ago called North of the sun. They spent a winter living on a beach in the arctic circle, in dark and freezing conditions. The spent their time snowboarding on the hill behind the beach, and surfing (wearing thick dive wetsuits). When they got there, you could hardly see any sand. Currents made it a natural dumping ground for anything floating in the ocean. They made quite a sofiaticated hut out of debris that washed up. Over winter, made a wheelbarrow of sorts out of rubbish, and gathered 3 tonne of rubbish, then had it helicopte
