    What is this for?

I don't have a real high performance boat its an early 80's IOR special from South Africa. I have an old furling 140% Genoa that I plan to replace with a 100 - 120% depending on who is giving me the advice and either a Symmetric or an Asymmetric. Currently, I sail wing on wing downwind or just take an as best angle as I can. I could still somewhat pole out an Asymmetric for downwind?
  3. I am keen to see how you plan to use it → https://www.drench.co.nz/catalog/Drench-37/Cattle-39/Noromectin-Pour-on-for-Cattle---Ivermectin-125.html

    What is this for?

Thank you, everyone, for your replies. So if I am going cruising and I currently have no spinnaker [on the purchase list] would I be best to purchase an asymmetric and or is there still a valid reason for an symmetric spinnaker and keeping the jockey/whisker pole? I would learn to use it, so not worried about that aspect and I plan to cruise to the tropics and likely a downwind route until I run out of cash.
  5. The newest ones are good, don't get an older second hand one. But get the sports version for cruising, the LX is not much easier to get into if you are free diving or scuba. The sports version is a drier ride and both are surprisingly a dry ride....even when it's choppy
  6. Interesting, NOTAM's only work if Plane drivers take notice...I have been at Bridge Pa airfield and Tokaroa airfields while a NOTAM has been in place and plane drivers have landed or done touch and go's...There was a drag racing meeting on at Tokaroa and two separate planes attempted to land and one touched and went...luckily for him/her

    What is this for?

Okay, the boat came with a spinnaker pole. I know what that is/does/can be used for....but I have another pole that came with the boat, that I have no idea what it is for? See pictures of the ends below....a hook and pulley at one ends and a normal pole attachment at the other. Any ideas?
  8. A lot of car companies in Europe use water cooled alternators. These run off the vehicles cooling system and are quite high current for there size. I'm looking at using one for a Renault Megane. Its about 150 amps. https://www.ebay.com/itm/ALTERNATOR-COOLING-WATER-RENAULT-ESPACE-MEGANE-SCENIC-GRAND-SCENIC-155AH/312211524893?hash=item48b141cd1d:g:AQQAAOSwYUlbbEhF:rk:23:pf:0

    NRC on fan worm

I had a call from NRC [Northland Regional Coucil] on Friday about my boat. They had conducted a dive on all the boats on the mooring field in the area [just off Onerahi] and my boat is classified as a 5 out of a maximum of 5 for growth. It was antifouled about 13 months ago with Altex NO.5, there is minimal slime on the water line. I am out at the boat twice a weekend at least every second if not every weekend weather permitting. I have only given the water line a scrap once. There are a lot of barnacles on her and its planned for her some come out late next autumn. Anyway, I wrote bullet poi

    Dyneema Rigging

Can I get you to clarify this a little further, please? I just got lost when the mental images happened?!

    Dyneema Rigging

At replacement time, are people replacing their wire rigging with Dyneema type rigging? Would you? What are the cons and pros? On paper, it seems like a no brainer.
  14. Technically, is this still the case if sailing to Australia on an NZ passport?
  15. Does anyone have any updates on more convenient flags of registry?
  16. I now have two main sheets. I have three points of attachment. One in the middle of the cockpit and two close to each toe rail. I often just use one mainsheet attached to the point of attachment that is required. Sometimes two. But, I am so glad I got rid of the traveller and do not miss it one bit!
  17. I would be cautious of this battery chemistry due to its constant current requirements during charging. This is too variable with solar and wind Imho. Lead carbon would be a safer bet.
  18. I would ask Mainfreight, they are generally really good to deal with and happily quote.
  19. What do you think of the Airmar & Maretron compass/heading sensors?

    Alloy mast

If it is not anodized. Wipe clean it with Acetone and it will remove the oxidised layer.
  21. Okay...So keeping the Vang and having a Pad eye near the toe rail on port and starboard and in the centre of the cockpit, to attach my twin mainsheets to. Is a traveller still worth being a major cockpit obstruction for cruising?
  22. What are peoples thoughts on a double mainsheet vs a traveller? For cruising, not racing purposes. With a double main sheet, you have some accidental jibe prevention. Do you need a vang? More cockpit space? What are the practical downsides?
  23. Can you recall his name or company name?
  24. Yes. I wonder if it is being dumped or it sold?
