  1. So, come July/August, we’ve got a week on a Pogo36 in Greece, and our boy will be 6 months old. Although he’s not likely to fall in while working the bow, or trimming from the low side, things can happen. What’s good and works and what doesn’t? And anyone got tips for dealing with tiny ones aboard?

MNZ also have the regs easily downloadable, https://www.maritimenz.govt.nz/rules/part-22/Part22-maritime-rule.pdf Specifically: 22.30 Anchored vessels and vessels aground (1) A vessel at anchor must exhibit where it can best be seen— (a) in the fore part, an all-round white light or one black ball; and (b ) another all-round white light at or near the stern at a lower level than the light in the fore part; BUT if the vessel is less than 50 metres in length it may exhibit an all-round white light where it can best be seen instead of the lights referred to in subparagraph
  3. Can’t edit on phone: This incident does beg the question if it is indeed wise to send a fleet of high performance racing boats into some of the world’s busiest and poorest waters where many boats will be wooden and unlit. It’s likely not considered prudent to be charging along at +20 knots in the pitch black. But the pressure of racing mean full steam ahead. So where do we go from here? Mandated speed reductions at night in some areas? Better radars? High powered headlights? Do Volvo race rules revert to int Colregs during hours of darkness?
  4. http://www.volvooceanrace.com/en/news/10854_Fatality-confirmed-of-fishing-vessel-crew-member.html Not good news...
  5. Hi Damien, do you have any photos? Pretty much anything made of wood can be repaired...
  6. Is this a possible model to help yacht clubs recruit new members and enthusiasm?
  7. Just going to ask here what people consider to constitute harassment, and what people consider to be sexual harassment? Defining what harassment is can be quite enlightening to many people, as can be defining what isn't harassment can also be enlightening. Additionally, when someone says they "feel" harassed, we have to look at why that is in the context of our definitions above. Harassment is about feeling (the receiver's perception) as much as it is about intent (the deliverer's perception). Many guys are scared that their genuine attempts at a compliment may be misconstr

If you run two sets, you can end up from some angles looking like a different thing. eg. You might end up showing red above red (not under command - even though there's 12m between the lights), or green above green (no idea what that would be but it would be confusing as hell). If steaming, from some angles you might look like vessel restricted in ability to manoeuvre (red white red) but with some lights missing and funny spacing, or a fishing vessel other than a trawler, or if seen as green white then green, maybe mistaken as a trawler under 50m loa (no masthead required) - would depend
  9. There might be a DVD/streaming(?) available soonish? That's all I know
  10. Well most of the fish in the sea are ingesting plastic anyway, seems natural that they move to eating rubber instead of actual tucker... Tried those softbait things by side with salted pilchards a couple of years back. Got a bucket full of good snapper and terakihi in about 30 min, and it wasn't the rubber doohickies the fish were going for... Mussels work well, too, if you can keep them on the hook.
  11. Is that an unbalanced torque effect or an angular momentum effect? Sounds scary either way...
  12. speaking of launching - we're getting close... here's the blocking for inside the 12 stave birdsmouth mast - this is at deck level. And one of the mast test...
  13. It's a long shot but if anyone knows someone in Europe who's looking for sheet winches I have the following available: 4x Andersen 40 ST FS 2x Andersen 52 ST FS All still in their original packaging, unused. 15 months old. Bought for our boat project but as we've changed tack, so to say, they're surplus to requirements. Retailing here in Europe (incl. tax) for around €2300 ea. for the 52s and €1100 ea. for the 40s. I'd take €7K for the lot. R
  14. Well, so long as nothing goes drastically wrong, he looks like he'll shave almost 8 days off the record... that's some 18-20% better.. He should finish in the next day and a half, meaning a time of 42 days or so? maybe just into 43?
  15. Now just to make sure he likes sailing in a land locked country with no wind...
  16. Not really a marine achievement, but I recruited new crew. Well, recruited is a bit incorrect. I had a kid.
  17. Faster, yes, but to sail around the globe non-stop? SS United States (Trans Atlantic liner) maxed out at 38 knts, but could she have carried enough fuel for the journey at that speed? Some of the fastest US Navy ships the Independence-class littoral combat ships, will pull 45 knts but max range is only some 4000 NM at 18knts. The nuclear powered carriers, maybe? Unlimited range and max speed around 35knts?
  18. Far too dangerous to get on and off a boat...
  19. The guy renting out the Nolexes in the BOI a few years back used to cable tie one of those cheapie solar garden lamps to the pushpit of each boat. always on.
  20. yeah, Christina goes "shopping" in the attic where she stores clothes she's forgotten about...
  21. Bugger me! I just looked up some polars for the Young 11 and compared to the Pogo 36... You buggers in Young 11s will be getting to the anchorages well before me if it's upwind and anything under 12 knts...
