  1. I stupidly didn't take a photo of it while there yesterday, but found a photo online of the same motor. Leak is where the red arrow is pointing - from under the base of the oval plate that the "olive" sits on top of. Doesn't appear to be coming from the line itself. The oval plate is held on by a bolt either side of the olive with a 5 sided head (not the usual 6) meaning it needs a special socket to get it off. Thanks
  2. One minor point of note, have realised the engine is actually an md2040, not a d2-40 as I'd said above. Gave it a good clean and went leak hunting on the weekend. On the outside of the injection pump there are 3 pipes that head off to the injectors. These each go through a pair of locknuts, then each goes through a small oval plate that boots on to the casting that is the outside of the pump. The fuel appears to be leaking out from between one of the oval plates and the casting. Is it reasonable to try and remove theses plates and reseal? Or is taking them off effectively opening t

Elliott Marine do a good job of keeping track of their ones... https://www.elliott-marine.com/elliott-library/
  4. Not certain on this but my understanding is that sniper was the first one and the plug for the mould. If that's so then I don't think you'll have a choice between timber or glass if sniper is gone. That'll mean it's sniper or a glass one.
  5. Interesting article https://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/2019/01/10/splice-failure-linked-fatality/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=facebook Would love to know if the experts here agree on those strength reduction percentages? I havent read the actual report. But my view is blaming preventer failure for anything is always a bit tenuous. Sure a preventer may help prevent an uncontrolled gybe in big breeze, but once that uncontrolled gybe has actually happened and the breeze has fully backed the main then something's bound to let go sooner or later, whether it's the preventer or some
  6. Thanks all. Jon, it runs fine so you might be on the money. I will get some degreaser and have a good look for leaks coming from the high pressure side. CH the bleed pump is a separate unit.
  7. Hi all, My engine is leaking fuel from around the injection pump. It varies from none at idle to a steady drip under load at cruising rpm. A quick look at the injection pump tells me it's bolted on using unusual bolts with 5 sided heads. I presume this is Volvo's way of trying to tell me I shouldn't pull it off myself. Does anyone have experience with these? Are there likely causes? If I can locate a 5 sided socket in the right size and remove it is this likely to reveal anything, or is it normal to have to replace the pump? Cheers

    Race week

Should be plenty of options for places to anchor in the BOI if you get there early. I'd start with pipi bay (awaawaroa) on moturua for breezes from the northern half of the compass and opunga or waipiro for anything southish. All have more than enough depth for your draft. One place I would steer clear of is otehei bay on urupukapuka. Chart shows 3.3m in there, and good shelter in almost any direction, but the entrance is shallow so while you might get in there in the top half of the tide you might have to wait for the next one to get out.
  9. What you've heard is possibly true. Few things to consider when looking offshore in general. Unless you get very lucky and find a boat that's perfect and ready to go, you'll likely have to spend a fair chunk getting it ready to sail many thousands of miles across the Pacific. Even a well kept boat will need things. The cost and time (which in a lot of places means more exorbitant berthage) this takes can quickly add up to more than you'd expect to pay at home. To some extent this depends on your situation - whether you have time available and ability to do work yourself. It also depend
  10. Looks like oats have got it. At barrier and having some trouble with signal, but I can see a tracker updated 6 minutes ago showing oats with .3nm to go a mile or two ahead of Comanche and blackjack.
  11. https://gis.ee/sh/ Good tracker
  12. Looking forward to watching that! Hopefully a pretty close competitive fleet looking at those entries.
  13. Based on trademe usernames I'd guess the boat is now going to be a regular in the ssanz races
  14. Pretty sure the leopard seal has jumping on docks etc covered already
  15. Have to admit I've not followed the ggr super closely. But from what I have seen in the media, the retirements for the ggr have not been mental/loneliness issues. They've been boats getting caught in bad weather and having breakages. Just like the route du rhum. Certainly doesn't say that "these modern lightweight flyers can't stand up to a storm like the heavy slow classics"
  16. Are the weights people are talking here pounds or kgs?
  17. Not sure whether that's a serious comment? Best I can tell from the ggr tracker there seem to be 8 boats left of the 20 or so that started. Those old classics have failed at a higher rate than the route du rhum fleet... And they're not done yet!
  18. Strange local media has picked this up and are running with it now? Happened weeks ago?
  19. Update, it tapped out with a small cold chisel quite happily.
  20. So having got it all off the seals appear to be contained in the bearing carrier by a face that's pressed in and will take a press to get out. Any idea of another way without a press? Thinking of trying a cold chisel but worrying about damaging it.

I forget who was leading on the water? Had it in my head it was outrageous. Of the monohulls. I remember catching Vodafone and 888 after Rodney on the way north.

It was a fun race, but another one where most of us were still out there at the time of the scheduled prize giving. If only we could have shaken that little boat behind us with the big purple kite...
