  1. Looks like a fairly old fashioned cut to me but more knowledgeable guys are around, perhaps PM Booboo. If it were me I'd save my pennies and put it towards something more suitable if I wanted to sail hotter angles, keep an eye on sail brokers they come up from time to time.
  2. Nice boat, probably more likely a cruising chute rather than a gannaker, it should be fine running off the pole, especially if you want to soak off downwind with it.
  3. My bad just realized it's a furling main Was wondering why nothing made sense. Can you not just up size the line most winches should handle a size smaller if the load isn't to high.
  4. So you never go downwind because the main touches the spreaders?
  5. Yes downwind if it's breezy takes the load off better than flogging the sail. just be sure to keep adequate tension on the sheet to get a nice furl.
  6. You don't really want to be winching a furling line unless the boat is huge. Should be able to just turn away downwind and pull it in by hand. Apart from that you could get a larger line but then it would fill up the drum quicker or you could splice a larger cover on the section that goes into the winch.
  7. Those Vikings must have been tough buggers, very cool
  8. Thanks hopefully she will go to a good home.
  9. TM listing http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1143161704&ed=true
  10. Interior, spartan but tidy.
  11. They look pretty expensive to me. For sailing more than a few days the big pack works best for me. Don't have to mess with chargers. That said most devices I have are lithium Iron these days the AA and AAA's are mainly for back up and things like strobes. Where rechargeable are not much good as they slowly go flat whether they are used or not.
  12. You probably dont want to hear, but I tried the rechargeable thing for a while but relented and go with the 40 pack from Bunnings now, about the same cost but way more convenient. If they go flat no scrambling for a charger just grab another set, not very green mind you.
  13. The boat is on the local hardstand now. Looks like a tough little boat with the only apparent damage from the rock on the beach. With the right preparation and in the right hands it would be capable of making the voyage.
  14. It was blowing from the southwest so he wouldn't have been making much headway which is why he perhaps should have turned around. He should have been in close to the coast in flat water. All down to inexperience i'm sure shame someone didn't talk sense to him before he left. Yes Southeast Bay on Mayor Island would have been good shelter but it can get pretty nasty in close to the Island .if you don't know the area it would be very intimidating.
  15. Don't agree sorry. Who on earth heads off from akl to Dunedin in the middle of winter without a very well sorted boat and a fair idea of what you are doing? At least he should have had a contingency plan if the weather turned to poo. Turning around when the forecast turned could would have been a good idea. He may have made a good call for himself but can't help think that someone abandoning a boat that is in no immediate danger reflects badly on us all.
  16. We found it quite easily just headed for Orakei wharf and it popped up on the AIS. That said there is a lot of background light from the port etc. Have always found it quite dis orientating coming in there at night because of that. The AIS is a godsend for tired sailor's.
  17. Hard to see how the steering was playing up with a tiller steered transom hung rudder. http://sunlive.co.nz/news/132887-abandoned-yacht-on-waihi-beach.html
  18. That's a different windsong. That one is still in it's berth saw it there today.
  19. Agreed Scottie, sounds like the worst get rich scheme ever to maintain a database of yachts for grumpy old curmudgeons. It is entirely possible that someone changed the name of the boat in the register between 1976 and today, either way if a $55 one off fee is going to blow the budget maybe boat ownership isn't for you.
  20. You can get off the shelf bushes which can be shaved down to suit. http://www.ronstan.com.au/marine5/product.asp?ProdNo=PNP167
  21. Tonight's racing here (BT sport1) at 11:45, make sure you have a popup blocker. http://www.crichd.co/bt-sport-1-live-stream-ukhd.php
  22. Why re invent the wheel? have a look at the setup of similar boats, better yet the same design and see what they have.
  23. Well done Josh, bit jealous looks like some nice conditions.
  24. We did the sportboat division on Rocky year before last, old sails, no prod, A sails or code zeros but still had some good close racing don't be put off by not having shiny stuff.
