  1. Thats the thing with a lot of motorcycle chain lubes, they are designed not to be sticky otherwise all the road dust would stick to the chain which leads to premature wear on the chain and sprockets. They dry to a waxy finish so as not to attract the dust.
  2. That makes sense. What is the policy following extensive modifications but same boat and crew?
  3. Pretty sure you don't need to do the qualifier, unless you are in a different boat than last time?
  4. Clear as clear stuff thanks. Will be looking at the longhaul for us.
  5. Is this correct or just a typo? 8.1 The following flags will be flown for each division: A Longhaul Division– Green Flag -- Greater than 0.720 PHRF B Shorthaul Division -- White Flag – Less than .0820 PHRF
  6. If I wasn't married the house would be sold and I'd be there.
  7. Was certainly a mentally taxing race, the second of many park ups off the end of Kauwau was the worst. Managed to hook in to a land breeze off Bream tail which finally got me in to the finish after 4 a.m. panicked a bit going into the harbour and dropped the kite to early which cost me about half an hour. The Hospitality after the race was the best I ever. A big effort to organise a marina berth for every boat not to mention the gear bag with a bottle of Mt Gay for every boat.
  8. Any of the fully crewed boats need an experienced foredeck person or rail meat
  9. Maybe they just got the year wrong there is something in the vicinity in 2008 don't remember any ships going down then.
  10. Still looking for a car going up to the finish, if anyone hears of anything please let me know it's going to be a long solo delivery back to Tauranga otherwise.
  11. Berenice entered, looks like i'm coming up. Hope the cyclones stay away.
  12. Sounds great. Anyone know of a car going up to Marsden Cove with room for a passenger?
  13. By the looks of the entry list here http://richmondyc.org.nz/racing/info/route66-coastal-race/ Josh is doing it single handed. Still trying to get my Ducks in a row. As far as berthage at the cove goes do we need to contact the marina ourselves or is it all taken care of.
  14. Haven't we all got rocks in our heads, I am in the process of a keel update on a larger boat myself, doesn't make any sense except that it's fun. It does pay to go into these things your eyes wide open, plenty of people have started a project and then realized it was to hard or expensive or both and sold the mess at a loss. Was playing devils advocate. You are a long time in the ground so why not. As for the pull down test you wont need one, just talk to Mr BBW he can do a calc for you and you will probably find the boat will pass quite easily for cat3 and with the new deep keel i
  15. Awesome like the Party at Smokehouse idea.

    RNI 2016

I think it was optimised for the ior rule, lots of weird bumps and very low righting moment so it rated as a quarter tonner.

    RNI 2016

On this day in 1770 James Cook completed the first RNI. http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/james-cook-completes-circumnavigation-of-north-island
  18. I would jump on that offer from the Meister there are plenty of Guys around Tga who could do the fabrication for you but all the cut files and fairing boards are invaluable. As for spraying I know someone who has a pressure pot and compressor you could probably borrow for a box of Beer or two, It is the one I used for Rocky I sprayed it myself and am pretty happy with the finish it's the second boat I have sprayed the first being a trailer yacht, good prep is the key. We got some cheap paint left over from another job for the topcoats so that wasn't that expensive but all the undercoats\
  19. I use satin bathroom paint on the ceiling in the berths and other potentially damp areas, results in zero mildew or mould even after long stints aboard. The rest of the boat is marine gloss.
  20. One that also got me was when I forgot to turn the handheld vhf off and it would always go flat and start beeping about 2 in the morning.
  21. Conrad Colman, good on him. More here http://www.vendeeglobe.org/en/news/article/15085/conrad-colman-the-first-new-zealander-to-take-part-in-the-vendee-globe.html

    Coastguard

We travelled a lot between Tauranga and the Bay of Islands over the last 3 weeks and used the coastguard app extensively, I was surprised how good the cellphone coverage is now, apart from a small black hole near Cape Colville it was pretty much available the whole time. The predict wind observations are also great for tracking the trend of wind speed and direction. I tuned into the now casting on the VHF a couple of times but was a pain in the arse compared to using the app.
  23. Have had various TV setups over the years but ended up reverting to the trusty laptop, as long as they have decent speakers or can Bluetooth to the stereo it's all we need for those rainy days and don't suck much power. I have 5gb of data on my phone plan and have 4g in most of the places we go so have been watching a lot of netflix over the holidays. Just have to make sure your turn down the quality as HD sucks a lot of data and the low quality still looks very good. DVD's are a good backup for out of the way places.
