  1. Not sure about his experience (or even sanity) but I don't see how the boat is any less safe than the Moore 24 Webb Chiles arrived here in.
  2. Yep, the funny coincidence is that the fractional genny that was on the boat when it came from Nelson is also off carbon, what are the chances of the 2 sails ending up together back in Tauranga. We'll be easy to spot if nothing else
  3. I.T, is a Zeus 7 touch, I think the last firmware update was about 6 months ago, really like the unit and it has proven solid after a RNI race as well as half a dozen other coastal races wouldn't like to be without it now.
  4. If anyone got seasick on this years race they should probably stick to tiddlywinks. Was lightish but the breeze hung in there for the bulk of the course with flat water. November would definitely be better weather but wouldn't want it too close to labor weekend which is a moving target.
  5. Started on the weekend but now soaking up my week. If you look closely you'll see a nice piece of tapered carbon tube.
  6. Looks like a nice unit and a bargain to boot. Not sure I agree with the touch only though. I have found the buttons and dial on our Zeus invaluable in heavy weather when it's difficult to be accurate with the touch interface.
  7. I have done it twice once for the initial cert and again to renew it, we were told we had to do the whole course again instead of a refresher as it had changed a lot over the 5 years, (it hadn't). In my opinion it isn't really advanced though does have some good info, most people who have done 2-3 years of racing would have no problem, probably 30% people on the course were newbies.
  8. I'd say the crew were probably a bit scared and wanted off, looks quite rough but as was said the boat seems to be handling it fine. They may have had the helo near by and were given the chance to get off so took it, the rescuers usually give them the option. If I were by myself or with a race crew there would be no question but to ride it out, If I had the responsibility for the family with small children the answer may well be different. Pretty easy to say from the comfort of the desk but different from out there. From memory after various training's and briefings with Helo Guys our
  9. Love or hate the personalities you gotta love the fact they have the balls to do what every other government should be doing.

    Solar Power

I found an 80 watt would keep up in ideal conditions so just bought two of them, often one of them isn't in an ideal location so works well. Occasionally in the winter I am having to top the batteries off if I am using a lot of power and not running the engine much.
  11. Get hold of the owner of NotNegotiable and have a look at the floors on that. (I have his number if you need it). That has a bulb keel.
  12. A lot of us probably need to tick Racing and Cruising but the option is on one or the other.
  13. Agree with a decent anchor, sounder and reliable engine. Could live without a plotter as, although real nice to have, you can get away with handheld gps or phone. Would rather get a decent autopilot first. A good dodger makes things so much more pleasant when bashing into a seaway, although you are cruising so there isn't really an excuse for going upwind. Good batteries and alternator often top my list, although I love our new solar panels. Also after years of stuffing around with engine run compressor fridges we bit the bullet and brought a self contained electric a couple of years
  14. Personally, if it were me unless I was going offshore in the next 2-3 years, I would be looking at something as an interim step more suited to coastal cruising and the odd race. Something like a y88 or Davidson 28 would be a lot more enjoyable to sail than a cav32 for 95% of weather conditions.
  15. Yes. By saying it is up to the insurers I was inferring it would cost more to repair and ship back than it is worth.
  16. Hard to tell from the shot but the entire forestay looks to be missing. Glad the boat has turned up and not on the bottom somewhere. I guess it's up to the insurers now.

    RNI 2016

Anyone who wants a taste of the RNI should be doing the Anzac 200, very similar just on a smaller scale. Interesting and possibly tough at times course, finishing in a cool place, surrounded by like minded people with ample opportunity to catch up and shoot the breeze because everyone doesn't just disappear home after the finish.
  18. Seems pretty much the same as the last one to me, never had an issue on multiple machines.

    Solar Power

Ours are running a self contained Fridge Freezer, similar to a Waeco, solar panels etc. are just a local chandlers. I looked up plenty of sites online with cheap panels but there wasn't much in it price wise so decided to support thr local guy.

    Solar Power

For what it's worth, I have recently purchased an 80 watt solar panel and morning star pwm controller. Nothing flash but solid enough. It has been running my compressor fridge 24/7 for the last week and the 220 amp hour battery bank is fully charged still. I have been so impressed I have ordered another panel for the holidays as normally I would be running the engine at least once a day to keep everything charged.
  21. This would be worth a look. Moderate displacement significantly newer than the other boats you are looking at. Not very common in NZ tho. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-403479524.htm Nothing to do with me just looks like a tidy boat.

    Nanni Diesels

Had a look at those engines probably go forever but way to heavy for most yachts. Would be like buying a marine diesel from the 70's 230kg for 27hp is way to heavy. http://www.hfpower.com.cn/products_detail/&productId=d9e86cf3-7af6-4a1b-a930-ccbe68e92fb5.html
  23. Funny thing is today the good pommie cars if looked after or restored are worth a lot of money, whereas the piece of crap rusting in the paddock is still worthless. I think calling most boats toys sort of understates it, I reckon they are a vital mental health tool and should be subsidised by the government Actually for a lot of us, they are a lot more than that, they can be our homes and are fantastic for cheap family holidays especially now that the Kiwi Bach is out of reach. And don't need to cost much more than a decent camper van.
