  3. Used my fleming in 50 knots this year no worrys thats what they are for,Used another fleming on a delivery down wind storm jib only old heavy steel boat got knocked down and main hatch blown in by a wave vane just kept on going, would have been dangerous to be outside hand steering. Were surfing at up to 14 knots. Not sure how an autopilot would have handled it only use mine for motoring
  4. Im a huge bruce fan sat down stewart island for 3 days once blew like stink chain was bar tight for the whole time, took some getting out,I do have a manson supreme 25 as a back up works really well too.Have dragged a plough around enough anchorages to not really trust them.worst i have seen was a chromed plough on a flash launch, wouldnt grab no matter what they did.
  5. Hydrovane far to big for a chico,i have a late model fleming lovely light unit, saying that any boat with a stern hung rudder can have a small light trim tab fitted, which is as simple as it gets. And is basicly bulletproof.

    Sea kayak

Ive had 2 brilliant boats had one snap in half in a storm, not boats fault big dumpimg surf across Te Waiwai bay, about a mile offshore. They feel tender for a start but the rougher it gets the more the sharp v at bow and stern bite in.Boat only snapped as I had a super light hull and decks and had a compass recessed into deck in front of cockpit,it was a weak point, the two guys I was with both had rudders torn off and boats racked at cockpit at the same time.We did the trip the following year to Dunedin, now im older and wiser I wouldnt do it for a million bucks.

In my crazy youth a mate and i kayaked from fiordland to dunedin i think a rudder is a necessity, especially in a strong crosswind and will give you much longer surfs.paul caffin definitely rates them. Its also a safety issue if your getting blown offshore you cant muck around with steering strokes and for surf landing they are very helpfull,i bent mine sideways coming into st kilda just pulled it straight again big breaking surf too rough for the local surfers. If your just mucking round sheltered bays may not need one, they make paddling so much more enjoyable though imho

  19. Port hutt is a good anchorage just be aware of holding pots in the bay they are under small buoys, dropping your anchor on one wouldnt go down too well.Kevin Clark owns most of the bay he has the wharf with the sunken boat on it,I introduced myself and was made most welcome very nice bloke.Waitangi now has a breakwater so fairly safe anchorage now also.Floyd Pendergast is the hotel manager nice bloke too pays to call in and see him too for any local info.

  21. Took me a while to get to nelson strong northerlys wouldnt let me into cook straight ended up going via Lyttelton, left boat there for a week until had good conditions to get up coast.Big lagoon in centre of island is too shallow to navigate in.I tried to get to pitt island but weather pushed me back ended up in port hutt great spot there pinned there for a week by strong sw winds, had to come home after that.ended up building the paua diver a new ensuite as i was using his mooring,There is a very shallow reef in front of pub be aware of that, tide rise is only about a metre which makes the divin
