  1. seems to have lost its furling jib/genoa
  2. well done! LiveSailDie can also confirm that at least one of the fugitive’s police were seeking has been found to be onboard. this seems to suggest it was the helicopter grifter and partner http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/65986490/Couple-on-the-run-may-have-stolen-yacht http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11269769

  4. if your budget is 30-40k all up you may be better spending 15-20k on your first keeler and holding the rest for expenses this wouldn't be enough for a good cav32 but there are plenty of other 20-30' keelers that will do everything but offshore easier, less stressful + cheaper to get you soloing around the gulf right now http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-847412384.htm http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-846852982.htm or maybe this with a brand new engine http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yach

  8. from sa Unlike most here I have been around diamond shoals in January in 20' seas and 35 knots of wind. Should we have been there? Probably not but in a 80' maxi downwind really not that big of a deal. In a 55' cat f*ck that. I cant even imagine the pure luck and driving skill needed to keep from flipping that beast. 20' seas in the gulfstream is no laughing matter even downhill. Sometimes the waves are so steep they just break right on top of you other times off you go a 20 knots trying not to pearl dive into the wave in front. Great fun in a maxi other than the ones that break into the c

  12. the last few days have been plumbing the new craftsman cm2.16, (mitsubishi 2LE) back where the vetus 2.06 (mitsubishi 2LE) used to be the vetus had the optional zf10m gearbox with 2.72:1 reduction ratio the craftsman (cheap new/old stock) came with the standard zf10m with 2:1 reduction ratio so to avoid changing the propellor the plan was always to keep the vetus box also had decided to try and use the still good, 2006, vetus; engine mounts, starter motor, control panel + looms...but the vetus loom's relay box didn't fit the holes on the slightly different craftsman bell housi

  18. engine now here and sitting in the back of the car hoping to get it onto the boat this month but the recent mission has been to set up an old windows xp netbook on the boat as better, faster plotter than the clunky, slow 20yo furuno opencpn software is on the computer and have loaded it with digital versions of all the nz charts released by linz BUT, have not been able to get NMEA data from the GPS to computer via serial to usb converter - NMEA is good as it supplies gps position to the DSC VHF - serial to usb converter driver installed, device manager shows it com6, b

  22. After an exceptional career and just a few hours after shattering the solo trans-Atlantic and 24 hour records, the trimaran IDEC was wrecked on rocks. After crossing the line at the Lizard, Francis had headed down the Four channel, passed the Raz de Sein in the evening and then, because he had a morning rendezvous at La Trinité, decided to slow the boat down by reducing canvas and sailing before the wind. His heading was to leave Penmac'h about 30° to the right, but, because he hadn't slept for a long time, he fell into a deep sleep. He was on autopilot and thinks it must have g
