  1. so many lawyer and billionaire jokes come to mind, but still a bit early I think...
  2. these are journalists. They went through the arts stream at school, not the science stream.
  3. Yeah, I couldn't get over that. I'm no big time sailor, but I would have got away from a lee shore ( preferably go to the other side of the island), find a spot away from every other boat swinging in a rope, put out as much ground tackle as I could get my hands on, lash everything down, and then decamp to a bar onshore and view events from a comfortable seat.
  4. cool range of "opinions". Thanks CD for the detailed description. On SO we have lead/acid (one wet, one AGM) so I'm not going to spring for a B2B system, and the VSR is staying (hey, it has been using a heavy relay triggered off the alternator warning light... VSR is high tech by my standards). No shore power. Thanks Matt for the contra-opinion. Your "simple yacht" statement aligns. Both have helped me clarify the needs and so the plan.

  6. interested on thoughts on this as well. As I am mid-rewiring on SO, should I: have the start battery as the primary ie all charging sources attach there, or; have the alternator only to the start and secondary charging (solar, shore) to the house, or; all charging sources to the house? Assume a VSR between the batteries. FWIW, I would intuatively choose option 2, but I'm not wedded to that. Supplimentary question should the charging sources be connected to the switched or unswitched side of the relevant isolator? FWIW, I would intuatively
  7. And since we are updating the solar, a new main distribution board is being built as well. Volt/ammeter and fuse for each solar panel and separate Volt/ammeters for house and start batteries. 20A circuit breaker protects the house supply to the switchboard. Space at the bottom right is for the capstain breaker.
  8. If it's paye you are an employee. Employees have an employment agreement. The employment agreement is a negotiated document. Feel free to make reasonable prosals to change it before agreeing to it. 😁Pragmatic employment advice given for free to crew members. Several satisfied customers so far.
  9. Also today, trial fitting a solar panel off the pushpit rails. We have a 120w panel in front of the dodger, but it spends most of its time half shaded. Two 60w panels off the back will up the electricity game on board.
  10. Control lines at the base of the mast had gone from grey to green. It was time for a wash. 15 minutes and a medium spin should do it. VID_20240804_143754.mp4
  11. Probably something to do with EU and wider privacy laws. While your old email address may have b een given with implicit consent ("by following this link you accept our marketing sh*t for the rest of your life and possibly into your next life unless you opt out through our byzentine and archane opt out process") that consent now has to be explicit and opt in.

I get the feeling razor wire wouldn't work in these cases. https://youtu.be/5WukKFYe6Jg?si=ID8m3TEqWeBB2XNb

  14. Limited, it's pretty technical and subject to case law. Not an area of the ACC operations manual I have had to familiarise myself with fortunately.
  15. His commercial insurer won't pay as there is no legal ability to insure against compensation liability. However, his business will very likely have increased ACC levies as a result of the very high claims cost following the event.
  16. Unfortch, suicide is not deemed accidental under the act, but I get your drift
  17. You can always believe me.

  19. It is a little known thing about ACC. IMO, they should talk more about it.
  20. Paid by ACC (you and me in other words). Accidental death whatever the cause and setting results in up to 5 years' income of the deceased paid to the estate. https://www.acc.co.nz/im-injured/financial-support/financial-support-after-death
  21. More often than you might think. That's the justice system at work. The evidence falls where it falls, the judge or jury assess on what they hear and see in the courtroom. This was a trial requiring " beyond reasonable doubt". That's a very high bar for a prosecution to hurdle, and rightly so. The judge had doubts, so the outcome was a foregone conclusion.
