  1. This has been mentioned before but there is no coordinated policy to control biofouling. If the govt wants less poisonous leaching from underwater coatings then failing a breakthrough in technology (let's face it, despite millions spent on R&D there's nothing but vague promises and aspirations) there needs to be concomitant policies that enable boat owners to clean their vessels easily, regularly and economically. Instead we have the removal of hardstands, grids, poles etc, the increase in fees to use existing facilities and an acknowledged decreasing effectiveness of coatings. Now so
  2. I dont think this is an economical or practical repair in the long term even in the best case scenario, that said you could go down the quick and dirty route and just get it welded as is. File and sand to an acceptable finish while you find a secondhand winch.
  3. Yet for the entire history of yacht batteries in NZ they are in wooden boxes under a bunk with no outside vents fuming away under the squab usually. Number of FLA incidents compared to boating hours is infestiminal.
  4. Definitely one for an engineer to deal with. I am not sure of the best method but probably grind the crack to a vee shape clamp the drum to make it tight against the gear then spot weld to hold it together. Remove the gear and complete the weld. The next step may be to put it in a lathe to clean it up, then refit the gear... Allow a couple of hours.
  5. quite a crack!, step one is drilling a 3mm hole at the end stop it getting worse. Try taking it to an engineer but I am doubtful an adequate repair can be made, heating changes the temper of alloy and there are teeth inside the drum that will be softened in the process leading to failure, probably at a highly loaded moment
  6. It appears the success of CC depends very much on how its applied and where the vessel lives, also on expectations as some people have no idea that all antifouls coatings require at least some cleaning between haulouts.
  7. I doubt that a battery box is going to help much to prevent fire, as the heat has to go somewhere but anyway I went down the rabbit hole of trying to find out what the legislation says with regard to lithium installations. My conclusion is that they really don't want you to know! How about $186 for a copy of the standard https://www.standards.govt.nz/shop/asnzs-3004-22014
  8. Worth a try, a lot depends on the type of aluminium, have you got a picture?
  9. Copper coat is the modern version but there is a reason it hasn't taken the world by storm
  10. I met Drew Smith while he was in Westhaven getting his 34 ft boat ready for the leg from AK to Rapa-iti, a trip of about 2500 miles. Here's his website https://farotherside.com/ His route is something like this He said he needed to head south to catch the westerlies before going north, he cleared customs on Easter Sunday. The weather eased for a few days before the next system came through, here is the next system He sent me message saying all is well, and while we are all tucked up and warm I can't help but spare a thought for Drew out there on his own
  11. Things change, one of the underlying assumptions when we view the natural world is that its "in balance" except for us pesky humans who are not part of nature but somehow outside the environment 🤣 The reality is that the world is always changing, Kauri forests grow up, get burnt down, dinosaurs existed then poof they are gone, the earth rises and sinks, earthquakes, floods, volcanos, ice ages and now caulerpa in NZ. How did it get here? One can only guess. Can we manage it? maybe, perhaps technology is the answer but what is certain is the environment that supports it is going to change eventu
  12. Ok, here's the mpi resource https://www.mpi.govt.nz/biosecurity/exotic-pests-and-diseases-in-new-zealand/active-biosecurity-responses-to-pests-and-diseases/exotic-caulerpa-seaweeds-caulerpa-brachypus-and-caulerpa-parvifolia-in-new-zealand/science-and-technical-advice-and-work-of-the-exotic-caulerpa-national-advisory-group/#techA2 lots to wade through but the short version is it's going to take a miracle to eradicate it fully.
  13. After reading that article, it's a lost cause and the minister is basically doing performance art. 150 tons washed up on one beach? I think the best strategy right now is hope because unless something happens in the marine environment i.e. a predator or some other controlling factor then we are in the hands of fate. Suction dredge and one tiny fragment turning into a football field in three months? 6 1/2 million so far to try and solve the problem with a dredge, my only comment is that it sounds like great work if you can get it.
  14. Pretty sure vivid is a different paint chemistry, whereas warpaint and no 5 are solvent based ablatives so mostly likely compatible.
  15. We were out at Barrier a month ago and it was parked up behind the mussel farm just outside Fitzroy, but this Easter trip we noticed it was gone. Pretty hard boat (and owner) to miss, someone must have seen it around.
  16. It's not a great time of year to be going up the west coast, about now the big 960 lows start rolling by every 7-10 days in the Southern Ocean. So you'll need to pick a window then drop everything and go. I presume from asking on here you are probably not that experienced, so another vote for boat haulage. As an aside, if this is about looking to buy a boat in Wellington and taking it North then you are probably better to buy one up here since they are very cheap at the moment.

Thanks for that K4309, people make mistakes most people getting into sailing are genuine, somewhat inexperienced and starry eyed. Its a story as old as yachting https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/couple-trade-havelock-north-home-to-sail-the-world-adam-and-vickis-travels/YU4FRSLQZRFNXFULAIHBNF7OFU/
  20. The secret with desmodur is to clean the container threads with acetone and store it in the freezer. Still goes off though eventually
  21. its probably worth trying, its tenacious to say the least. The TDS does not say it wont work on PVC but it does say to test on plastics. The main thing would be not moving the joint while it goes off, that and use plenty of masking tape as it truly is the devils creation
