  1. "Some" papers does not sound very convincing and while anything is possible, Ive never had a dolphin hang around for more than a few miles if that. The peel off from a pod, play then disappear again. This seems an overkill, and impossible to police. In all seriousness who is going to drop a kite and slow to a few kts to rid themselves of dolphins?
  2. Can anyone school me on the reason for these dolphin rules with regard to yachts, everyone has had countless dolphin encounters with zero contact. They seek us out for a play if anything. Are we "bycatch" in an effort to solve a problem caused by other water users?
  3. We know because it was the thing to do in the 80's- head around to a mates place where a few people would gather to watch RWP. So much incredible music every week. Good times, Karen Hay has a slot on National these days.
  4. Turned up in the marina recently, very small indeed Makes the 930 look like Ross 40 Auckland Islands you say? Very practical and sorted Happy is the man who is content with what he has, why go bigger? https://boatingnz.co.nz/swirly-waves/

It's mint, huge areas of sheltered water, just avoid getting sucked out the entrance if theres no wind great place for a sailing dinghy, plenty of rivers and places to explore, adventure time!
  7. Actually its pretty simple; an invasive species has been found in a few bays on GB there is a moratorium on anchoring etc until a long term response is developed. Bit of an inconvenience but we will survive.
  8. You are suggesting this is a political rather than scientific decision. To clarify since all decisons are political- this is not backed up with scientific data, reasoning at this point? Maybe, if its been there 10 year and hasnt spread more than a few bays then that is good news as 10 years of boats travelling all over the island "should" have spread it everywhere. If ocean currents then why not everywhere all at once along that coast? MPI do not know, so really this is speculation not fact "How did this pest get to New Zealand? It is not known how long this pest
  9. I think the best case scenario is that the spread is slowed. Maybe they are just monitoring the growth rates to see how much of an issue it's going to be, perhaps avoiding anchoring those areas may stop it spreading all around the island in holiday season so what may have taken 20 years or more to reach the other side might be done in a few months with the holiday makers if left unchecked. just thinking out loud, As I'm pretty sure you cannot get rid of it unless doing it manually, you can't mow it and you can't poison it
  10. To be fair the first reaction is caution until they know what they are dealing with and yes it needs to be better publicised. Fish may well be right that its endemic and I cant really see how you can stop a marine pest spreading but I am not a scientist
  11. Hang on a minute fish, Im on the phone to MPI now theres a team of oceanographers and marine biologists who have just thrown out all their research and are checking the comments section on Crew for guidance
  12. I disagree, it is not mad. Its an effort to contain an invasive species. Now that I know I will cruise elsewhere. Maybe the cat is out is the bag but Barrier deserves a chance.

    Xmas cruise

Its going to be mint! were getting the bad weather now
  14. pretty much, LH deserved the win but the officials made a pretty suspect call that allowed Max right back in touch.
  15. Thanks for the info, its apparent that drop ins are not quite ready for prime time, Ill probably go with carbon foam as it seems the best LA tech and pretty good value for money in the long term.
  16. Max is on pole, https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.verstappen-snatches-pole-from-hamilton-in-thrilling-abu-dhabi-grand-prix.0BrCED36Vqok2dkZRKsMR.html It is going to be an epic battle 0300 Monday
  17. If your' not deep cycling it then a car battery should be fine, the load on a starting battery is actually pretty small as long as it has the CCA you need. When you think about it you start the engine, maybe 10-15 seconds max even with glow preheating and maybe run the windlass for a few minutes.
  18. Crashstappen or the Hamburgler for the win?
  19. Be great to see Petrux on one instead of the KTM
