  2. Had a similar thing with my son. Went from the Opti one season, half the next season in a P, then on to the Laser Radial as I figured he would be putting on height & weight too fast to come up to speed with the Starling & I'd probably be looking at a Laser after a season anyway. Problem was that after a year & having just turned 15 he was 6'1" & too heavy for the Radial. He had a disastrous light weather nationals so moved on to the full rig but despite doing well lost interest in sailing with a bunch of old men rather than his friends many of whom were still in Optis. I'd

    Laptop charging

You have to be careful you have a good quality inverter. I once tried with one I'd bought from Dick Smith - problem I guess is that it is not quite a sine wave & the switch-mode power supply on the laptop whined like a jet engine for a few seconds before going pop.

    Flares

To be fair Wheels, it does say "LED Road Flare" on the packaging & shows a picture of a car having a tyre changed. You'd have to be fairly "uneducated" to make the leap to a marine flare.

  8. Maybe because you advocate sailing within a few 100m of the coast.
  9. Once heard a TR being lodged for someone leaving Issie Bay, bound for Motuihe Island.
  10. Hi Marshy, I've got a laminated wooden centreboard & rudder blade for a Starling. Unfinished, bought them years ago with the intent of glassing them. No rudder stock. You can have them if you want I'll never do anything with them now. JK
  11. The phones/tablets use a mixture of Cell Tower triangulation, what WiFi networks it can see, and GPS. Some devices do not have a GPS chip (iPADs with no GPRS functionality for instance) & rely on the first two, the others would use whatever mix is available with you would hope a preference for GPS. At least with iPhones/iPADs they upload a list of GPS coordinates & visible WiFi networks so via a data connection a device can figure out where it is in the absence of GPS. Recently we moved house, WiFi moved with us with the same ID, then looking on "Find your iPhone" one or two de

  13. "Is it to far to motor the dinghy??" Not if you stay within 200m of the shore and go ashore to camp each night.
  14. Got to hand it to the navigation skills. http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11561151 Bad reporting, was actually off Mangawhai Heads, or the whole of Bream Bay away from where he said. Coastguard concerned that he was not wearing a lifejacket, although he had managed to get into a dinghy & at one stage was actually ashore walking along the sand dunes.

  16. For removing the old silicone, after the Stanley knife part, I used Selleys Silicone Remover from Bunnings/Mitre 10 or similar. Apply the gel with a cheap brush, leave for an hour or so & then it pretty much wiped off, then wiped over with a rag soaked in thinners.
  17. Here's a pic of the top of the T750 keel:
  18. Hi Nigel, on the T750 it was also loaded up from the bottom but then had UHWMPE wedges screwed on that located the top of the keel when down - mated up with similar wedges on the inside of the case. Originally had a plate & four wingnuts to lock down, but this had ended up with a dyneema lashing. I'll see if I can find a photo.
  19. Awesome reporting - "more than three times the daily recreational limit". At a daily limit of 150/pp then 10,548 is actually 17.58x the daily limit for 4 people. Maybe the reporter ran out of fingers.
  20. A path down which multiple electrical signals travel. Like a "Bus Bar" on a power distribution panel it is where multiple devices can be connected to gain access to common signals.

  22. After the 2nd day of the World Champs NZ in 1st, 3rd, 13th, 32nd, 75th. 4 wins for James Wilson/Oscar Gunn 3 wins and a second for Tam Lindsay/William McKenzie http://www.sailwave.com/results/29er/2015Worlds/q-series.htm
  23. Light winds on the last day re-ordering the positions, but still 1/3/4/25 for NZ in Gold Fleet & 4th in Silver. Measuring for the World Champs tomorrow.
  24. Doing exceptionally well with 1st, 2nd, 4th, 27th in Gold & 1st in Silver with one day to go! http://www.29er.org.uk/results_reports/14_RESULTS_GOLD.HTM http://www.29er.org.uk/results_reports/14_RESULTS_SILVER.HTM
