  1. I think pricing is alot about what the locality will stand. Welsford is always 8-10c/l checper than Warkworth. Lincoln Rd stations can be up to 20c cheaper than eastern subs and North Shore somewhere in between. When travelling south always found the Mobil station at Waharoa has the best price in the area, even better than Gull in Matamata. One thing about Gull, I was told when I bought latest motorbike not to use their 95 because it has quite a high ethanol content, which some vehicles are not engineered for.
  2. I know that the existing inventory is the easy excuse when oil price drops (and it is not an unreasonable argument), but the same never seems to apply when petrol/diesel prices go up immediately following an oil price increase. In Australia 91 ULP is currently 1.05 in Brisbane, 1.20 in Sydney (with 4 cents difference in exchange rate), compared to around 1.95 in Auckland. Alot of difference in the excise taxes between the 2 countries
  3. enough horsesh*t, coming back to fuel I was surprised on emerging from level 4 that fuel prices had not dropped further. Comparing Dubai oil pricing (from https://oilprice.com/oil-price-charts), as we know the price of oil has fallen off the cliff and currently sits in the low $20's compared to $65 in February, ie a ~67% drop yet when you look at local fuel prices for both Petrol and Diesel, there has only been an ~ 25% drop and we all know the price of fuel goes up about 1 nano second after there is an increase in international oil prices but always reluc
  4. The Carboline enamels from Altex are good, single pot easy to finish and are quite durable
  5. you said "No horse registration is compulsory with sever consequences for falsifying the data / information" (by the way it looks like you missed a comma after "No" and the correct spelling is "severe"). Show me the law/regulation that requires this compulsory registration.
  6. so where is the single register for all horses in NZ held - please provide the link? If you are correct it should include the likes of old hacks for riding around the farm.
  7. I think if you check you will find horse registration in NZ is voluntary, unlike say dogs for which registration is compulsory. I answered your proviso re registration.
  8. Sadly that was the case with Essence, they were in shorts and Tee shirts the day before they came to grief. That being said I was a bit surprised when they left Fiji because the outlook was not great for their arrival off the NZ coast.
  9. I do not see bicycles or horses registered (just to pick 2 examples) and there are far more injuries and deaths associated with these than pleasure boats. Rehab, you know as well as anyone that these sort of taxes, after the large bureaucratic cost is deducted, never finish up where they were originally intended. Road taxes are supposed to be used to develop roads but they are being diverted to all sorts of other transport expenditure with road development and upgrades taking a back seat. https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/105249934/how-your-rising-fuel-taxes-will-be-spent
  10. Dashew is/was a glider pilot and not short of a $$ so the sitting harness probably came from the aviation world
  11. Getting chucked across the cabin is a major risk and the current breed of wide European boats are a problem in this respect. Re the query about seat belts, never seen them on yachts but interestingly Dashew fitted both sitting and bunk harnesses to his FPB series powerboats
  12. This storm was very concentrated and boats outside approx 100NM circle did not see more than gale conditions. A mate of mine was on a Cav 45, they were just in front of the storm and had a tremendous sail to Tonga under poled out genoa. I would be a bit doubtful about the "sailed right through this" sounds more like they were in front of the storm. Steve Dashew has made all his books available for free download here https://setsail.com/free-books/ in the "Mariner's Weather guide" there is a very comprehensive review of this storm. There is a discussion about rescue of the crews
  13. Biggest lesson reading the book was the deep fatigue everyone experienced. We are fortunate now to have much better weather information but even that does not make us bullet proof. The Monowai rolled beyond it's official limit of stability, good job the Naval Architects left a bit of fudge factor in the design. Ramtha, the Aussie cat, drifted around for a couple of weeks and was then spotted and towed in relatively unscathed. Makes you think that the best strategy in a cat in this weather state is to get the sail off early and go into "raft" mode either on a drogue/para anchor or jus
  14. BK, I think you are being a bit unkind to Gib Stoppers there, most of them take some pride in their work. Really feel for anyone stuck with one of those cats, absolutely disgraceful what went on!
  15. the wind surfers in Shoal Bay sure were having a blast when I drove past early this afternoon 😃
  16. I was talking to Barry Jones today (we are marina neighbours) about edging on plywood (I have a plywood locker door that has sucked up some moisture as it does not have edging on the end grain) , he said that treated timbers can still go soft over time if they are in a damp/wet environment. He said heart kauri was an exception and as we know even it can be susceptible to dry rot if fresh water gets in its end grain. Des produced very good designs but he did not supervise the construction of boats built by others. There are plenty of Twilights (and other wooden boats from that era) around
  17. I will just repeat my closing comment to Dan_Ger in a PM - Caveat Emptor. In the case of Balvenie a prospective buyer needs to have the survey undertaken by a surveyor very experienced in this type of construction.
  18. depends what timber was used in the construction of the hull
  19. HT, ref different coloured fuels I think you mean the UK which the EU Stasi used to get really upset about https://www.crownoil.co.uk/guides/dyed-diesel-fuel-guide/ I never saw diesel with different colours in Australia, when I had my launch there I had an off road users certificate which I had to show the marina where I fuelled up. Please do not suggest boat registration, also lived with that in Australia, it was just another tax.
  20. that Townson unfortunately has some problems which is reflected in its price. It is being advertised as built by Barry Jones, this is not strictly correct, Barry finished it off - the hull was built by others, all as described in Brian Peet's book about Des.
  21. if I remember correctly there were originally 1, 2 and 3 t rates. Then I think it was Cullen who zapped the 2 t rate pushing most into the 3 t rate and then under Nats it was changed to the current all paying the 3.5t rate.
  22. we never seem to hear much from these guys https://ayba.org.nz/ but I know they do quite alot of lobbying in the background, particularly when the council comes up with another brain fart
  23. when you see the header on their newsletters "Dave's Desk" it just sums up their arrogance. The worst thing is they are competing with their own members, notwithstanding the fact that Akarana had their (recently completed) expansion on the books for years, they have still tried to push through their own facility at Takapuna
  24. 1. Visiting back of the Barrier in January 2. Trip up the Mahurangi River to Robertsons for haulout!
