  1. Did you try super cheap. I am surprised Repco didn't have one. These things are as common as chips.
  2. Thanks for clarifying that grantmc
  3. I have a good friend that has his Boat in a Marina in Turkey. It's cheap to do so an he has a local that looks after it for him. He goes there each year and Sails the Med. Food in Turkey and Greece and in between is dirt cheap. Of course there will be some Med Countries that will be astronomically expense as well I am sure.
  4. No nothing to worry about. Today it is just one of our common flu's that rounds our planet each year. Th H1N1 virus. The death/infection toll is what it took for the World back then to gain "Herd Immunity". And even with Herd Immunity, that did not mean that in the years after 1920 (when the pandemic officially ended) People no longer died from it. In fact it still kills the old and frail today.
  5. Not the only one to be wiped out. The Spanish Flu killed (officially) over 50 million people around the World. Unofficially, it is thought that the toll was closer to 70million. Some Historians even stretch that out to 100million. At minimum, over 500 million were infected. At a time when the World population was only around 1.8 Billion. Just imagine that percentage being applied to today's World population of around 7 Billion. And the idiots argue that it is against their Human rights to have to endure a few weeks of lockdown, or wear a mask in Public.
  6. the Zatara crew are a good example of the latter. It does not look like Australia or NZ is likely to let them in so their only bail out option if they want to leave the cyclone region is to head north to Palau or Guam, ie US territories(sort of in the case of Palau) Errrr, surely unless they were already cleared to go, they would not have been able to. Who would have cleared them? If they did get cleared after lock down, then that is a Gvt stuff up. I can certainly understand that if a Vessel was ready to go and had clearance, it would be far better to get going. In fact Customs w
  7. It is pure and simple poor communication and management of the situation by the Gvt. They are, very sadly, demonstrating this same level of bad communication and management in many situations. So Super Yachts have been given the clearance to head to NZ. The smaller Yachts that are asking to be let in have had no reply via direct communication from the Gvt at all. They found out there was a "No" to them coming here only by reading the Gvt Website. That is very poor.
  8. A real big difference is cost. It is much cheaper to cruise Greek waters and moor up at night and eat out there than it is here in NZ. To hire a yacht here costs a fortune and then eating out at any of those places in the Sounds also costs a fortune. It was once a common thing here in the Sound. Today it is very rare and all those places have either gone or struggling to survive.

There always has to be one that makes a mockery of us Nerds 😁 I was talking to a Boaty once about all the nerdy stuff about Batteries and Charging and getting the most out if them and he too replied with, well I just have a simple start battery and it gets abused daily and yet it is now well over 10yrs old and still performing just fine. Kind of blows my discussion out of the water when that happens.
  10. Wow, that is shocking. I had no idea so many vessels were lost each year. But then, these large Ships are designed to give only 30yrs of service before being scrapped and yet many are still operated well beyond that time. I once worked for a guy that was a retired Master of the large Oil tankers. He retired simply because he said the industry had become too dangerous. The Ships were still in service when rust of significant structural areas was a major problem. Plus he was Captaining during the time when the Crews were being replaced with cheap labor. He said it was time to get out before he

Actually Super Capacitor is a not actually what they are. A true Super or Ultra Capacitor is something quite different. Commonly found in Computers. But also used as regenerative storage devices. They cannot be used for the kind of battery we need, simply because their Voltage is linear to Capacity. In other words, as you charge it, the Voltage increases and discharge, voltage decreases in a linear way. Also they self discharge far too fast for long term energy storage. The Super Capacitor battery is still a Lead Acid battery, but they use part of the technology that is used in a super capac

Great points D2. And that 125A till full makes a huge difference to shortening the charging time. Unlike Lead Acids where it takes hrs and hrs to get those last few amps of capacity in.

    Lithium v AGM

Im not sure what that means ? AGM s do not require any physical (apart from electrical) maintenance. They can be installed upside down quite happily. I think what D2 is meaning is that it is not always Convenient to keep a battery bank fully charged when living on the boat 24/7. And in most instances, no you won't get 20yrs from a AGM. But nor will you from any LA battery type. The life of any battery us simply the number of cycles it can provide. The number of cycles is summed by the depth of discharge. Longevity between Gel/AGM/FLA is a very difficult one to judge. It is depende

This is misunderstood by so many. It relates to the internal connection between the plates and the ability to withstand corrosion. This is never explained by any manufacturer and the figure is very misleading. If the battery is never ever cycled, then it should last 20yrs before the internal inter-plate connections are not longer viable. The more expensive names tend to use very good corrosion resistant materials. However, cheaper manufacturers now also use similar materials and use this figure of longevity as a false positive feature in their claims. In fact I have come across several people
  15. It's full name is Alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (ADBAC). Benzalkonium chloride (BZK, BKC, BAK, BAC) is the more common name.Trade name is Zephiran, It is a organic salt. It is one of the most commonly used products on the Planet. It is used as a Germicide and is the active ingredient of Dettol. Also used as a spermicide, mouthwash, antibacterial throat lozenge, eye washes, Antibacterial soaps. The list is huge. It is also a Positively charged Cationic Surfactant and thus also used in a non germ related way as a fabric softener and Hair conditioner.
  16. This is the last comment I am going to make on this as many are getting testy about it not be relevant to the topic. But you are wrong. In regards to the discussed individual, he was/is part of the number of refugees we are taking in from that Oz Island group. We are taking a certain number each year(1500 was it?). So you could call that a Cue of sorts. And they were supposed to be vetted to ensure a possible terrorist was not using the situation to sneak through. It has nothing to do with Migrants, illegal or otherwise. These people have refugee status without being on our shores by the
  17. You are looking for any product that has the active ingredient called Benzalkonium Chloride. Spray and Walk away. It is not a bleach and is safe on Sails and Paint etc Products like Gone in 30secs is a Chlorine Bleach and bad for such surfaces.
  18. My comment was only in support of KM's understanding of how it all took place. While I am all for refugees coming here, I do think there needs to be a certain process that needs to be adhered to. I mean by this, we will take in x number if refugees for the year. This guy managed to jump the cue so to speak. That means that some other person that was more toward the front of the que has now possibly missed out. If it did work out that way, I don't think that is exactly fair.
  19. Firstly, that is a bit harsh Prascilla. KM is darn close to being spot on. Also, he did not make any statement opposing the guy becoming a refugee here, but he was alluding to the process and errr, lets call it "creativeness" of those in the background involved in getting him refugee status here. The laws do not work this way and this actually makes it unfair for those waiting on seeking refugee status. This guy is no more special than anyone else in those Refugee camps waiting.
  20. Does anyone know enough about what the NW passage is like this time of the year?? Will it be clear Ocean, or is it still mostly ice with the chance of a path through it or something like that?
  21. Kevin, I read all sorts of Research everyday. I am not on Websites that I have to apply BS Filters to. You should know that of me by now surely. Although yes there has been a lot of BS posted on this concept and easy to find with a quick google search. It can also be found on sites like Snopes. However, my story is different. This is actual research by a company that has released their findings. As CD has stated just above and the company themselves have said, it is not new. NASA has used a similar process before. However, what NASA has done is not in anyway something that can be used
  22. Imagine the Energiser Bunny lasting hundreds or maybe even thousands of years on just one battery without ever needing recharging. Or how about a Boat Battery Bank that could power your boat, without recharging, for ruffly 50yrs. Sound impossible????? Well maybe not anymore. OK, so not just yet. A Firm in the US have just discovered a way of making it possible. In fact on a very tiny scale, they have actually done it. Although I guess the longevity is going to be a hard one to prove. They actually believe they can produce a Battery that could power someones Pacemaker for about 28000yrs. (no
  23. I am not commenting on whether Peter is right our wrong. I just simply want to clarify why the no boating rule exits. Firstly, it depends on the Country as to whether you can sail in their Waters or not during the C19 crises. For those Countries that are banning Boating, it is simply for one reason. If anything should go wrong for the Sailor and they need rescuing, that Sailor is causing the Rescue People to have to come together and risk a possible spread of the Virus between them. Simple as that. Although Peter has sailed all over the World, is very experienced and highly unlikely to eve
  24. Oh I didn't realize you were so far away from the boat. And of course, we still don't know if the fault has been cured yet. So we can't celebrate yet.
