  1. Thanks southernman. PM sent.
  2. Anyone got a bunch of world wide charts suitable for Open CPN that I can put on my hard drive? I have most of the pacific and some of the caribbean already but looking for more if anyone has anything. We fly out tomorrow night to France. Will be at the squaddy tomorrow evening for a few beers so can meet there or anywhere that suits.
  3. Short answer is yes the market has had a significant corection, especially with the older boats. Jon is in tonga right now but he did buy a boat up there and sailed it back. All went well for him but im sure he will reply at some stage. I juat brought a 2007 beneteau oceanis 50 in france and head up there with the family next week to slowly sail it home.
  4. Thanks for all the positive words guys! I just started a facebook page so you can go there to follow the adventure. https://www.facebook.com/ROGUE.sailing.family/
  5. Shits getting pretty real now, what started as a dream a few months ago has all happened seemingly very quickly now! House sold in 4 days, got a pre auction offer we couldn’t refuse then the auction got brought forward and went up a fair bit from there. This allowed us to start the boat buying process, I had a few lined up and wanted to start with some that were slightly out of the budget first to see what we could actually get. We had a good friend (marine engineer, superyacht skipper and surveyor) check out a Beneteau Oceanis 50 in the south of France and subsequently made an offer which w
  6. Yeah we had a lot of weed too. Had to clear the rudders at least 15 times. Overall it was a challenging day but once the wind filled in with the full moon it was lovely sailing-until the rain started... That will be my last race in NZ for a while- one way tickets booked to France for the 3rd August to jump on our new boat and go!
  7. Na I would go west coast and leave from durville island.
  8. You might need to tighten/shorten the luff cable. If the cable is set too loose you get that real whip loading but if the cable is taking the load then the luff should just hang off the cable and luff more like a headsail attached to a forestay. You should be able to adjust the cable length either at the tack or head with a lashing. They often require a fair bit of adjusting to get set just right. If in doubt make the cable shorter that you think.
  9. Yes Ken that's exactly what was discussed.
  10. Not sure if I ever put our RNI video up here. Its long- more of as documentary really but gives a good idea of the whole race and the conditions.
  11. We did offer to help them with a story and they said they were writing a price on ssanz and the RNI and didnt need anything so we left it at that. SSANZ article was great but I must say the RNI feature could have been a lot more detailed. I am guessing it was a bit of a marketing thing. Other than answering a few questions I didn't have much to do with it.
  12. For the first time in at least a decade I missed out on competing! About 3 weeks ago Damon and I had 2 boats to choose from, the Sunfast and Motorboat but they both sold the week before the race! So we decided to jump on the committee boat and help out (hinder) on the committee side of things for a change. It was a real push to get this race sorted straight after the round north island and guys like Jon Henry to name one, really have put in a huge effort. A volunteer that has pretty much been full time running yachting events so far this year. Anyway it sure was another epic weekend. The
  13. I guess we could look at another division for that if there was enough interest.
  14. Hobart is actually much harder if you are at the top end of the competitive racing fleet. Sitting on the rail for 3 days is not easy especially in a southerly buster. The level of competition is pretty damn high and its bloody hard work. Probably pretty easy if you are just doing it for the challenge and not pushing so hard. They are very different events, RNI really is an endurance event, you not only have to survive the sailing but also the stopovers.... And again its all about how hard you push (both on and off water activities). Some peoples perception of 'racing' is very different to
  15. 12nm to go to east cape for us. The wind lightened a bit for a while but now we are punching into 22kts again with a sharp chop. Been a challenging leg right from the start... Looking forward to bearing away in a few hours!
  16. Yup delayed start. Zero wind for us.
  17. The observations lied. There was no wind at kidnappers at all. 5 hour park up for us actually.... Good result for us though in the end.
  18. Jet broke the main halyard apparently. Pretty tough leg, mostly light winds for us and we missed out on the hammering the boats got yesterday afternoon. Lots of damage done around the fleet. Nothing for us luckily.
  19. Yeah its sure looking like a driftathon. Should be some sea breeze in the afternoon I hope before the light SW fills in. The sunfast is fully loaded and ready to go now. Been a big few weeks of race prep! Now looking forward to getting out there.
  20. You can get the windows off Keith from acrylic solutions. He's a boat owner too.
  21. Pm sent with bobs number.
  22. There is a good one in picton called KJL sails run by Kent Luxton. Maybe give him a call as he often goes down to Christchurch or you could send it up to him.
  23. Major job to change the boat to take running top mast back stays, it involves adding 2 winches to start with. Probably close to a 5K excersize for us. Not really worth it, 5k is better spent on sails! Topmast runners also make manoeuvres a fair bit more complicated when short handed.
  24. Yeah just trying to make it easier 2 handed and loose all the weight of the furler. We have found that we use the medium jib for pretty much everything, it has a reef point in it so covers 8-30kts easily. Thie reef is by far the best way to change gears, we could reef it and then unreef it in half the time and effort of anyone elses single jib change. The reef was pretty dodgy with the foil so the soft hanks will make it safe and easy. Code zero covers the 0-7kts range OK so the light jib doesnt get used all that much offshore and we have only needed the heavy jib twice in since the boat wa
