Psyche 755
Frankly I am not surprised but incredibly disappointed that the people who administer these policies appear to have absolutely no idea about boating, it also brings into question who wrote and approved them. It seems that there is absolute need for a representative from a NZ wide yachting organisation to get involved on behalf of owners, if only such an organisation existed? I would happily pay an annual fee as part of our club dues to make that happen.
Clipper 363
Don't we all (as yachties) pay heaps of fees to some kind of national organisation to represent us in matters like this? cough @YNZ cough....

harrytom 682
Ok boys n girls now we have a problem. If a sea snake is protected as it arrived under its own steam, does that now mean Fan worm/asian paddle crab/invasive wedd at Gt Barrier protected?? https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/sea-snake-in-auckland-banded-krait-spotted-at-viaduct-harbour/S4HZWAUO2NGSRM43VSSL2RA6SE/

No more than yellow/bluefin tuna , mahi mahi , sunfish , wahoo and the odd tiger shark that come down on the warm currents . the other buggers you have mentioned are “invasive” and more than likely hitched a lift in ballast water and on hulls
harrytom 682
Just read a fishing report, last weekend while night fishing forbait in Urquaharts bay they had brown one with yellow rings, guess warmer temps will invite these here.

No. They didn't get here under their own steam. Their larva hitched a ride in water ballast or attached to a cruisers hull.
waikiore 454
I wonder if the snakes hitched a ride too

But you leave Westhaven with fan worm and cruise the gulf except northland. So why not put in place same rules? OH that's right they cant due to Westhaven pontoons being infested with the worm and great cost to eradicate.
waikiore 454
Dont forget that fanworm is just cleaning the water, and the BOI square barnacles are heading south that is the real issue that the NRC know about but refuse to address
Jon 398
Just catching up with this but don’t see why Northland Councils are so pissy about this We cleared into Marsden Cove about a month ago and there’s fan worm on the pontoons there The stable door is open, horse bolted and a spark from its shoe set the whole farmyard alight. Black Panther 1,717
A female Fanworm produces 10,000 spawn, at least once and sometimes twice per year. If you start with one female and 0.1% of the offspring survive, then in 6 years you have 1 million adult fanworms. I.E. if you want to stop them you can not let one survive. Good luck with that. Steve Pope 253
There is little actual understanding (by the Regional councils) of the reality (impossibility) of what they are trying to do. I have just read about a yellow sea squirt that is apparently now in Stewart island, they realise that it can't be eliminated, but wish to "slow" its spread. "Yeah right"
waikiore 454
The NRC knows the fanworm is through the BOI as evidenced in the Te Puna inlet two years ago and yet this farce rolls on.
Zozza 334
What's the problem with fanworm anyway? Is it the Mussel Farms that they destroy? If so, good.
harrytom 682
With warm waters, more shipping. this is always going to happen. https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/130495180/new-discovery-of-an-invasive-seaweed-found-in-pristine-dusky-sound?fbclid=IwAR3hr-oAxv5bGgHySqO-rWvlqz_WITAm3t6DV7hadOsADGr-b34pLJR_PCc

Whats wrong with mussel farms??They filter up to 350lt a day per mussel. Provide a haven for fish. The mussel industry are providing, maybe a cheap rate for mussels to be dumped around the gulf to help revive the gulf.
