jetskis have to be registered,so why not trailer vessels.

Jetskis were registered mainly due to a number of dangerous and deadly incidents involving young men being idiots, pressure groups formed which got the politicians involved.

And the Mayor of Auckland, John Banks. Busted hooning on a jetski within 200m of shore, might have been Kohi I think.

I would support registration of boats, specifically with a clearly displayed identifying number. That people can be easily traced and followed up for poor behaviour I think would have a profound effect on a lot of poor behaviour. I would say to register fizz boats, but I have no issue with registering all boats, not going to pretend yachties and launch owners don't have a proportion of poorly behaving individuals.

I don't see any benefit in licensing. In Aust it appears to be a revenue generating means, possibly with the justification to fund on water enforcement. I believe people should have the right to kill themselves if they choose not to wear a LJ or try crossing bars when it's not on etc, most of the things that licensing would educate you on.

The only issue with boat registration would be the cost of administering the system compared to the benefits. I'm not convinced the benefits would outweigh the cost. The question being, what problem are we trying to solve? There is a big difference between inconsiderate boats passing too close at speed / putting up wake, and outright dangerous boats that need to be apprehended.

The thin end of the wedge, pin stripe suit wearers in Wellington bring this up everytime their dept looks at downsizing .  Creating a job for themselves with no definable benefit to the general populace.

This mornings Nelson Marina fees update....

  • "Boat Ramp charges have been increased by 150% from $6 to $15 per use"

That is a cut and paste....I am now waiting for a correction to come out.... I hope correction is changing $15 to $9 and not 150% to 250%

There is an easy answer to the registration problem, which avoid the incredible expense of setting up a new authority with all its staffing etc. The AA already register thousands of vehicles. Just add boat registration to the AA, minimal setup cost, just a design of one new form, and we're done.

Auckland Council of course, are thick, with their registration of jetskis. They wanted that as mentioned above to have the details of the owners in case of misbehaviour, loss etc.

Why, oh why, did Auckland Council simple not say "register your jetski by getting a VHF callsign". The same information is logged with your callsign, it uniquely identifies you, and best of all, if you get into trouble, Coastguard can assist, and has your details in case of emergency.

AA doesn't register vehicles.  It acts as an agent for NZTA.

Conceivably, the same system attached to a different database could work.  Problem is, NZTA is not a maritime authority so a whole set of legislation would need to be enacted to make it work.

Same with the vhf call sign idea.

It's generally a bad idea to try and make one database do more than one thing.  If recreational boat regi,stration was to be a thing, the only real approach is a new database under the control of the relevant authority.

Quite correct, AA is the agent. But then we'd  have three authorities, all with their beaurocrats, and all the expenses.

Just treat vessels as vehicles.

Following that logic, they will also issue gun licences and fishing licences, building permits, doctors registrations, etc 

One authority to rule them all.

actually that's not a bad idea, but not "to rule them" just to sell them.

Basically set up an online Govt "supermarket", a shop front to allow purchase payment for whatever you need from Govt. The individual items/license or whatever would be administered under whatever part of govt they come from but then it only need one on line site that does payments, security etc. rather than each department having to set that up.

Why not just trailer regristration? If you have a double trailer,as same do,then add a extra number?
