Great place to go. Everything within a very short walk. Supermarket, fuel, cafes, fishing supplies, dive bottle refill etc. There is water on the big wharf and fuel on the end. Only accessible close to full tide. You can even catch the ferry back to Auckland at the other end of the bay Plenty of anchorages, Te Kouma etc, and pretty much always somewhere to shelter. Nice cruise up the westside if heading to the Barrier.

So I have a copy of the actual Marina annual accounts. Will try and write up a few comments later.

Just about had a heart attack when I saw the new westhaven marina rental rates. WTF. So as I do I went to look at their financial statements YT 30 June 18. First thing is they look like a property development company, which I guess is not surprising. Good new they only pay themselves $22m per year (whole entity) in salaries They made $12.5m in berth hire. Marinas went up $20m in their accounts in one year due to "transfers" no idea what they transferred. They did a DCF in 2016. They dont do any segment reporting so I cant tell how much they spend in the marinas. Apparently 9

I have an Excel from KM. Awesome anchor. Anchor testing porn. http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?/topic/169269-anchor-geekdom/& Some interesting stuff in his testing.

Thank you Crazyhorse and Rehab.. They dont need Police or AC parking people. It is private land (just happens to be the Council) and they set the rules for parking. Yes Rehab I have raised it with the Marina and I already stated what they told me. If they don't know their own Terms and Conditions they should find another job, it is their contract with the 1000+ boat owners. This is not about the Marina. this is another example of why people who think an extra rule or law will fix the last rule/law that is being ignored need to get their heads read. If people see no enforcement or e

Hi Crazyhprse. To berth in Westhaven you have to agree to abide by their Terms and Conditions. Their Terms include the section I have quoted via a clause that includes aspects of their website. If you don't comply then you run the risk of having your agreement terminated. Westhaven therefore has a legal right to to undertake actions up to and including termination of the agreement. Now I am not asking that hey do that, I am merely asking that they actively ensure people are abiding by the very terms of their agreement. No point having it if they will not enforce it. As to parking,

So as an example of why enforcement should be increased first I give you Westhaven Marina. There is as you will know a 5 knot speed limit. In addition it is a no wake zone. So I asked the Marina to follow up with some boats about speeding and whether they could have a bit of a blitz/flyers etc. Their response was that it was up to the Harbour Master and they had no powers. Now this is patently untrue and shows they cant be bothered enforcing their own marina rules. There is a section in the website that states: Boat owners must moor their vessel at their berth and manoeuver so as

The problem is enforcement. Licensing does not change that. The rules already exist.

Yes I am insured and boat insurance is bugger all given the capital cost insured, the environment it sits in. Is there a broker on here that can tell us what the claims rate is for boats? How many accidents have you guys had that involved another boat and was not during a race with a competitor?
-
We don't hear about it because there are stuff all actual incidents. Worst offenders for exceeding 5 knots in Westhaven - Yachts. Worse offenders for coming too close at speed - giant Rivieras or similar.
-
I am sure everyone on here has never made a mistake, has done all the relevant courses, never exceeds 5 knots where prohibited, never rowed ashore without a PFD etc. Those registered jetskis never break any rules right? Some enforcement would go along way. Along with and first, some serious public education.

If you have Navionics charts they have a function called Sonar charts or similar. If your MFD, depth sounder has the facility it logs where you are and the depths etc, you then upload it to Navionics, they verify it and you can download the latest "crowd sourced" Sonar charts (not for navigation they say ). I often run the standard chart side by side with the "sonar" chart. Where people go a lot and share the data you get some really good depth definition.

Trapped myself on Orapui filling up about 10 years ago. Tide pinned me to the wharf, never been back

Going back from Cat to mono, just for coastal cruising?
dutyfree replied to TwoSail's topic in MarineTalk
on smaller, older, and generally narrow yachts I can see the attraction of a tiller. On more modern wider yachts I think they become less appealing. 1020's with tillers, 1220's with wheels, but an old narrow stern make the wheel on a 1220 a pain to get past etc. Just look at the beam on that modern yacht with plenty of space to get past and easy steering sitting out on the edge. -
Wear and tear and other costs mean they are often happier to cover the big distances on the transporters unless the owner is really wanting to cruise the whole world.

we are lucky and have a center pole on our berth, always have Keeps me away from my neighbours and them away from me.

unless you are diving deep or are stupid (like holding your breath) then scuba is pretty safe especially if you have done you PADI training and follow it. At 2m under your boat not much is going to happen that would not if you were free diving. Scallop/cray diving at 10 to 20m for a short period is also relatively low risk. Start going deeper, wrecks etc and the risk factors start to increase. At 10m you are only the approx depth of your boat down. If you have medical every year and you are judged okay by your doctor you are probably okay. Dive in currents, by yourself, with idiots to

Got an Excel from KM. Anchored all around Waiheke, Kawau, Fitsroy including in January's big blow. Sets fast and hard. Did not budge in January's blow while sitting up past Smokehouse and watching the wind whip the sea into the sky!

I use a few, Wind dan instead of the Coastguard app, and Predict Wind, plus i have a few of the others. I like Predict Wind as they have multiple models and you can get a feel for the potential forecast variances.

You shoudl read some of Mike Lee's articles on this. The setup cutout democratic representation and existing governance.

Correct have not had fuel bug across three boats and many 000's of litres of diesel. I am also a bit slack when it comes to keeping the tank full in winter, which apparently limits the available air space for condensation to occur. But as mentioned earlier I put the fuel master stuff in with almost 100% of fills.
-
I have used the Fuelmaster stuff for over 10 years (or similar). Don't know if it makes a difference or not, but seems relatively cheap, maybe insurance, if it works

The problem is not restricted to sailing. There is massive competition for leisure/sporting time these days. almost 40 years ago when I was my son's age I could play cricket, rugby, soccer may be hockey and athletics. I did rugby and athletics. From my mid-teens I windsurfed and 20s started yacht racing. But as I got older (than early teens) more and more opportunities came up, skiing, mountain biking etc. Not many people want to do the same sport every weekend for hours on end unless it is fun or they are super keen. For example ski clubs are dying, elitist, may be, but driving etc.
