  1. Wasn't aware of the "built in Aussie thing", interesting. Def the AIS beacons seem like a pretty good thing, esp. if you're not solo... and easy to get over here for a hundred n something each. A good auto pîlot would likely be a bigger ticket item, if the boat didn't already have one. The newest ones, e.g. NKE have a man overboard feature (so long as you have the sensor/remote on you) that will round the boat up if you go over. Raft might have to be a shipped item. Therefore incurring added customs fees etc. Or he could rent/borrow/beg... What size is that ParaAnchor, ex TL? Is it th
  2. hahah yeah, I haven't received it yet and we're already selling it? But there are a few decent deals on older similar boats here in Europe. Willow, I guess he'd drop the top speed off his list, but i'm pretty sure he'd then be a grumpy bugger to crew for in any race... Few of those young 11s look in adequate condition. I totally agree that buying all that stuff separately is hella expensive, and far better to pick up a boat with it all there, but as I say, an Islands cruise would likely be 5y down the track, maybe longer... I wonder how much of the Cat 1 gear I could bring ove
  3. Clearly. Looking more at a boat that could be brought up to cat 1 spec with the correct application of the credit card at a later date...and yes almost any boat can be got there with enough $$ but it's more of a within reason kind of thing.
  4. ok, just checked out a few... also ran into this Whiting... https://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-1314584327.htm
  5. Agreed, but I think were looking more at a boat that can be got up to cat one, rather than one that's already at cat one. the figures quoted are purchase figures rather than ready to sail to the islands... An s34 might not be a bad option, he's had a certain amount of experience, having been introduced to sailing aboard one, racing Wednesdays etc man years back. But they are all getting a bit long in the tooth now. That Eliot looks relatively nippy... albeit over the ditch and therefore with the customs and gst jiggery pokery to work through
  6. Yeah I think it'll be more of a one off cruise, rather than an extended sort of thing. Primarily weekend and holiday Barrier or BOI cruising, and weekly racing... so for a shorter cruise to the Islands, I expect one would be happy (more willing) to put up with a few less comforts. And it's not like we're talking about taking the gun in the coastal...
  7. Yeah, i think DIY means he doesn't want to have to rebuild the deck, or dig out rot or osmosis... OK, so by planing, yes perhaps full time planing is not going to happen, but some good surfing might be on the cards. Perhaps I should have stated "something that is not permanently in displacement mode"... I feel it's a reasonable budget, but i think for ease of sailing and also getting more boat for buck and higher quality/better condition he'd bet better to look in the 32-35ft range... I'll be working on that angle...
  8. I know these Qs come up all the time, but as I'm fishing in a different sea at the moment, so to speak, I thought I'd defer to the collective wisdom. So a situation being bandied about in my circle of friends is a guy starting fresh in life again and considering moving up into a bigger boat. On his list of wants would simply be: relatively fast (i.e. can plane) able to be single handed, 34-40ft some cruising up to the islands coastal and harbour racing (AKL) 60-80k range. He's tired of DIY... What would you go for? I thought of putting this question in the "Who will buy o
  9. Completely surprised to see coper oxide on that list... given it's a simple salt and not an organometalic. Might as well ban copper metal... Why don't we just develop a robot that wanders around under your hull like a giant limpet and continuously scrubs your bottom?
  10. yeah, I too've been wondering about that.....

    Boat prices

Been having this very same discussion at home. The choices are Dacron sails that will "last for ages" vs laminates that will "last not as long but hold shape longer" I figure that the more out of shape the sail, the more difficult the boat handling resulting in far less pleasant cruising = more arguments, less happiness. Cost differences are not enormous. I think we should redefine what constitutes "lasts" in the "lasts for ages" definition of sails. If it doesn't have the right shape, or close to, then what's the point? The other argument is that even if it's out of shape
  12. With luck I'll be able to dry out my new boat pretty much anywhere where the beach and tidal range are suitable without the use of piles. Anyone see any problems with that approach?
  13. let's just be sure no one tries that with a rocket flare...
  14. Can also do a totally cool readout on your android Wear 2.0 watch. I want. But first. Has anyone done this? Additionally, I'd like to have a radar overlay on the AIS readout on my android smart watch. any one with info? IT I'm so glad you posted the name Vesper. For the last year I've been frantically tying to remember who it was in NZ who made marine electronics. I think I'll have to introduce this to Structures in Brittany. Might be nice if they start using this instead of whatever they're using now... it seems ot fit with their interface to everything ethos.
  15. Thanks for posting about the outcome. It's good to be aware of problems, but even better to know when they have been resolved positively.
  16. BTW, The Q23 rolls out the door for around €60-70K + sales tax ... That's an awful lot of money for a suped up skiff...
  17. That thing look pretty darn cool, and it's foiling in basically no wind. Well it's on lake Zürich, and there is never any wind here anyway. That's actually a pretty windy day for here... I wonder how my new boat will go if I knock the keel off and add a set of these foils and a wing... Here's a newer video...
  18. Dunno, but I'm really interested to see what tech comes out of this
  19. I feel it's a good idea for the AC to shift gears. The AC and the Vendee are the leading edge in high performance sailing. Look at what the last 2 ACs have done for foiling. Yes, Moths and some others were foiling ages ago, but the technological advances made possible by the great arms race that is the America's Cup, have really advanced multihull sailing, and have captivated a new wave of sailors. The tech is already filtering into the realm of the normal sailor. By pushing the AC into mono's I hope that the same kind of technology push is now applied to mono sailing, and that the e

  22. So it's not to stop your crew shooting up?
  23. http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/336410/boat-skipper-convicted-of-manslaughter-in-landmark-case The current system works. Let's make sure the correct lessons are learnt.
  24. Big shout out to Tim for hooking us up with these. Fantastic!

    Pogo 36

Went on a test sail - (posted previously in weekend achievements). Copied here: 9.4 knts true wind, +7kn boat speed at about 63-64° true. I can't quite zoom in to check the numbers but they're there on the NKE autopilot display. That's our test skipper on the right (Tanguy Bouroullec), and the prospective owner on the tiller. Boat ticked all the boxes. And they offer an impressive list of extras available at about 40% off what you'd pay retail. Biggest issue was not to get side tracked by the little waterfront house for sale in the village for a reasonable 270k...
