  1. Plus in that time the drift possibilities are massive. Very sad news.
  2. These ones http://richmondyc.org.nz/racing/info/singlehanded-series/
  3. While my knowledge on the subject is limited, I'm led to believe from the reading I've done that part of the problem is the rapid massive population increases in Auckland in the last ten years?
  4. Which means we all get to share the joy as our premiums increase to cover this.
  5. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a blue Beneteau matching the description/photos with that name around somewhere. Possibly for sale on trademe?
  6. Similar to others posting I've done a lot of trips up and down this coast, I'd struggle to guess exactly but it would be 50+, in all sorts of conditions. I agree with what the others have said about big easterlies demanding respect on this piece of coast. However in what looks to be a solid 40 footer, and from everything I can figure of the conditions over the time this unfolded, there were multiple valid options they could have taken which wouldn't have put them or various rescue crews into the serious danger that they did. Reading this: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-advoc
  7. The rock is right by Pataua. Slightly north of Whangarei.
  8. It's also quite possible that at the entrance to tutukaka and whangarei harbour, conditions were made much worse by funneling of wind/tide, reflection of waves off rocks etc. Could explain why coastguard couldn't get out.
  9. Can definitely imagine some of those places looking pretty frightening. I've been past tutukaka in big easterly conditions where I wouldn't have attempted the entrance. But with some south in the breeze it shouldn't be too hard to unfurl a little of that headsail and potter along northwards around Brett and into the boi. Given they've been able to make the poor knights and the picture appears to show them motoring into the conditions fairly happily, it doesn't seem that they have a major breakage. Theyve asked a lot of other people to risk life and limb, and wanted to be winched off
  10. Whangaruru would sound good to me too. I guess if they're having navigation difficulties and aren't familiar with the coast it could be hard to pick out? Cape brett not so bad if you give it a wide berth and don't do anything brave like trying to go through the gap. Then once around hopefully more sheltered and able to find somewhere to stop...
  11. Yeah I was wondering why this didn't seem to be considered. from there to oki or somewhere in se of 30 odd knots in a solid 40 footer doesn't sound so tough.
  12. Have been following this on the coastguard Facebook, nzherald etc. There were initial reports they couldn't steer, but that doesn't seem to match with the latest updates. I saw an update a couple of hours ago saying the rescue helicopter was being dispatched to winch them off, but I've just seen another update saying it was too rough and they've been told to go and shelter in the lee of the poor knights for another night.
  13. Depends on your boat and your needs. I bought one when I had my y88 and found that as they're quite mast forward, without the projection of a prod it was only good for a very narrow wind angle range. Much forward of the beam you couldn't fly it cos it's an mps, and much aft of the beam it got sheltered by the main. At 90 degrees it was good. Also good if you didn't put the main up. If your boat has a smaller main and a more rig aft config then it might work well. If you're a big main small foretriangle config then it'll probably be hard work without a prod.

    Route 66

There's talk on Facebook of a cat having flipped just south of tiri. On the race tracker attitude is shown sitting there not moving, so I guess it's likely to be them. Facebook says coast guard in attendance, hopefully they're ok and not too much damage.
  15. Not saying it is. In fact I don't consider my boat particularly old and it's closing in on double that.
  16. Yeah that was one of my thoughts as I was reading it. I guess the only argument for NZ to behave differently is it's harder here to get tradewind type sailing that they're aiming for with that race. Leaving here for oz/the islands l on a fixed date for a race, who knows what conditions you'll get...
  17. https://interestingsailboats.blogspot.co.nz/2018/02/transat-solo-faster-than-duo-crew.html?spref=fb&m=1 Also apparently a 15 year old plywood boat beating newer more high tech ones...

    Vestas collision

Looking like they're in better breeze and extending too.

    Vestas collision

Yep that was exactly what happened with Scallywag and how they got ahead. I don't agree with some of the way it's run, but I don't believe for a second that the results are rigged. Scallywag are actually leading this leg at the moment too.
  20. Clipper can't you do a refresher rather than the full 2 days?

    M.Sounds

Just to avoid confusion, the pwm stands for Pelorus, Waikawa, Mana. What I think wheels is calling Queen Charlotte is the waikawa boating club. The moorings are definitely worth having access to.
  22. I've been surprised after talking to Tom when we got ours that it doesn't seem prone to death roll. Have had the kite up in some fairly testing conditions including sitting on 14s with the fractional spin and a reefed main. Have original keel in original location too.
  23. Seems they have initiated one change, which is contacting the boats if they see them headed somewhere dumb. At least this time there was no crash. Hard to believe the pros on the boats are still messing it up though!

    Modern Cherubs

I owned purple Haze in Auckland around the year 2000 in half shares with a mate. Not sure what became of it, we kept it at my mates parents house, he went overseas and his folks moved away and I lost track of it. Wicked fun boat though.
