  1. That's a shame. He's a distant relative of my family and my father did a bit of racing with him back in the day. they've lost touch over the years though. Sorry to hear.

Thanks again. Whether we have time in Panama Will depend how long the wait is for the canal. Considering flying back to Columbia for a few days if there's going to be a long wait. If it's a shorter wait we'll just stay with the boat and start provisioning etc. Are there are decent provisioning options on the west side of Panama? Various forums seem to say no and that you're better off doing your shopping at shelter bay...

Thanks all. Jon, San Blas is on the list and we're planning 2 weeks in Galapagos if time allows. Already have agents and various contacts sorted for Panama and Galapagos thanks. We've just done antifoul in PR so all good for now on that front too

Thanks for the advice BP and the offer of the book Erice. Might be a bit hard to get it from you as I'm already in Puerto Rico... I've sailed through French Polynesia before through and have various other guides so hopefully we'll be ok.

    Bit of a sail

So while we've not quite got as far as committing to ditching Auckland all together like people are talking about in sundreamers "Auckland" poll, my better half and I have decided to skip winter and go and help our friends deliver their beneteau first 44.7 from Puerto Rico through to Tahiti. After much planning at home, me chucking in my job and Sarah wrangling 5 months off work, we left akl a couple of weeks ago. Had a week on holiday in the states and have now been in PR a week or so prepping the boat, which is coming off the hard where it's been in hurricane storage and going into the
  7. I've only been through the islands on a boat with a watermaker, but we were certainly glad we had it. Places like the tuamotus in French Polynesia availability of water for cruising boats wasn't great, so to not have to worry about it was gold. IT is right about the stack pack. Mine does a great job of collecting rain and then tries to get you wet each time you come to pull the main up after it's been raining.
  8. If I've understood correctly, twosail is resident in AU. If you're resident in AU you can register the boat there, which should remove the need for cat1 when leaving NZ? There are heaps of boats in that kind of size range and plenty more than just how they go in light airs to think about. I assume you mean a farr 1220 as I'm not familiar with a 1250. Maybe you should think about making IT an offer he can't refuse - I think his boat is a essentially a more comfortable version of a 1220. But there are various boats in that size range - lidguards, whitings, mummerys, chicos,
  9. I see Smokey joe has appeared at pier 21 so I assume that means they're looking at fixing rather than writing off.
  10. No duty here on boats from oz anyway, regardless of length of ownership. CER agreement between nz and au. Still have to pay gst though. And if you've owned it for a while you can deprecate the value of the boat for gst purposes by 10% a year
  11. The beneteaus are fine, for all the rhetoric floating around about them or any other production boat being bendy, there are many many of them that have done lots of miles without issue. beneteau own jeanneau, the internet says they're built in the same factory, so to say one is better than the other is pointless.
  12. Surely there comes a point where a kid becomes a help? From about 8 years old I was doing the delivery of the family cruiser up the coast for the xmas cruise to the BOI with Dad each year and doing shifts on the helm. Plenty of kids of that age are racing optis etc and quite capable of steering or even basic trimming in need. They're not necessarily going to do the same job you could, but at some point there must come a point where an extra pair of hands, even if it's just to "keep steering us towards that point" or "hold this sheet while I pull up this halyard" does start to give an adva

It is Charlie of Taboo, which he also designed and built (with his son). I see the auction says for more info ring Charlie on.... so that's probably the way to go.

Charlie is the vendor. And designer/builder. He's a good bloke and normally very helpful so perhaps hasn't seen your question yet.
  15. For situations where it's an actual repair rather than just a clear coat on top, nz fiberglass (in st helliers but they sell online as well) sell an epoxy resin with a uv inhibitor in it which dries nice and clear and isn't supposed to yellow in the sun.
  16. depends on the phone. If you have a phone with an SD card often the easiest option is to take it out and put it in your laptop (assuming your laptop has an SD reader) and drop the files on there. If using a cable it's likely that after plugging in your phone will need you to tell it to allow the computer to browse the phone, and not simply charge it. How this is done will depend on what you've got, on my latest version of android you can swipe down from the top of the screen and go into a shortcuts menu that lets you do it. Or, just use your browser on the phone to re-download the ch
  17. looks like Vela Via are underway again. Guarantee and spearhead both approaching north head at the 18.30 tracker update. Spearhead ahead but the guarantee has been steadily gaining on them.
  18. just noticed an update from Vela Via on facebook that they've suspended racing to "find a bay and find where the water is getting in the boat from". They go on to say they're expecting to be racing again in a few hours. Apparently they've been having 50+ knots on the nose, which doesn't sound like fun at all.

  20. Ran Tan have finished about 5 minutes ago Cool change have had a rigging issue which has caused them to head for gissy
  21. Thanks for the updates smithy and booboo. Glad to hear the cape is getting closer!
  22. Sunfast are smashing it. 4th on the water, 2 miles behind celadon. Looks like pretty slow going out there though. Especially for the back of the fleet. And so far don't seem to have had the big breeze forecast.
  23. Couple of hours ago there was a facebook post from the Marshal Law saying they were 20 miles out from the start but drifting backwards.
  24. Was great to be able to watch. Good job the ssanz team!
  25. Fish I've been witness to those pesky Stewart's going a fair bit faster than 11 knots in the right conditions... And pahi is a quick one. That's a shame about squealer. Long way to have come to not finish.
