  1. I'm lifting Ma'ara in a few weeks to do the antifoul and wanting to replace the stripe above the waterline, it was damaged by the anchor chain up in the Med before we bought her. Also want to redo the name etc plus we need sail numbers on the hull. Who can you recommend team ? Boat will be at Pier 21. Also thinking of putting name on both sides of the boom as its a leisure Furl boom and then only having the name on the stern, does this comply with YNZ requirements ?

  7. I find Sailboat data is a rough guide to compare yachts of similar size, more difficult a 32' against 40'. It's not always accurate either but a starting point. Another important thing to consider other than ventilation is stowage, don't limit your search to by a few feet, a 45 footer will have possibly twice the available space of a 40'er. Plus a watermaker is a no brainer to me, not that you can't do it without but finding reasonably clean water can rule your life in the islands, were as with a watermaker your only limited by your draft and dreams. A few said they had trouble seeing us, the orange light was working all night, but it all depends on what traffic is on the waterfront behind and how many street sweepers with orange lights as well. We always anchor about 200m off the end of the wharf, we had our race tracker on and we run AIS. We will be a lot easier to see in Isslington bay for the last race plus if you finish the last and shortest race after dark you may have to take your own time as we could be busy.

Do you think you get all or enough of the old oil out going down the dipstick tube, I really like taking the bung out of the sump and leaving it whilst I change the filter, sometimes I'll also pour a cup of clean oil through just to make me feel better. I can do this with my genset as it has a hose off the sump, but there isn't enough depth in the bilge under the main engine to do this, so seriously thinking of getting a hose made up to attach to sump bung then attach the other end to a small plunger pump Probably just being anal but it always makes you feel good after a good oil change an

I think from the above you can read into this the following If your an older/long time keeler owner your less likely to be a member If your possibly younger or have a fizz nasty or a trip truck your more likely Guess it's a perception of risk thing really just like young and Remuera tractors drivers are more likely to be AA members IMHO anyway.

I'm probably your classic non member Sailed around North Island twice, NZ once, 3/4 of a circumnavigation over the last 35 years and a lot more as a yacht owner, never quite got around to joining but also have prided myself of never having needed to ask for assistance. But have been a volunteer fire fighter for over 20 years and volunteered at yacht club even longer. Maybe I'm just different But now I've said this I should join as this has probably jinked me, but self sufficiency is a state of mind I believe
