  1. Supercheap have these: http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/online-store/products/Oil-Filter-Wrench-Strap.aspx?pid=12566#Recommendations http://www.supercheapauto.co.nz/online-store/products/Toledo-Oil-Filter-Remover-Nylon-Strap-305211.aspx?pid=SPO1352568#Recommendations
  2. We have a leisurefurl on a 40 footer and find it awesome but you do need to head into the wind to reef (we always start the motor).

  4. Yep happens in houses also - around wood burner flues. I would have thought that boat had a wet exhaust - dry exhausts are often quite noisy
  5. Being safe has more to do with making sure your boat is up to scratch and you are vigilant in your navigation and you carry appropriate safety equipment for the the voyage you are planning. When we are planning more extensive trips the boat is pretty close to Cat 1 equipped and all systems double checked. At night and rough weather we uses harnesses and the man on watch has an Epirb attached to him. In other words you need to be self reliant and confident in your vessel and crew and only call for help as absolutely a last resort. If your vessel is well found the chances of an emergency are
  6. From the Maritime NZ Radio Handbook page 42 : Every effort should be made to notify arrival at a safe anchorage or at the end of the voyage. However, unless a vessel is reported overdue, the absence of a closing TR will not initiate a search or other follow-up action.
  7. Yep got to agree Wheels - tstick data cost sucks
  8. Maritime NZ specifically say they will not instigate a search if you miss a scheduled position report while you are on passage and have set up a TR with them. For that reason we we did not bother with them and instead relied on our predictwind tracker and regular emails home via that system on our trip around NZ. Our previous trip to Nelson return we did file a TR but with the predictwind system we did not consider it necessary this time. On any of our other coastal passages between Auckland and North Cape we never file trip reports with Coastguard or anyone else as we feel they are an imposit
  9. Occasionally these things are set off by accident. Registration means attempts can be made to contact the relevant people and also obtain useful information as IT said
  10. BP - where are the lifejackets and harnesses ? Great times !
  11. Another pic - cutout worth every cent and not a problem in a big sea. Closed cockpit far more risky as any water dumped in there is a lot of weight and slow to get out.
  12. Nothing wrong with a manual toilet - less to go wrong and easier on the battery. Having said that I like the lectrasan mainly because you don't need a holding tank - although we do run the motor because of the voltage drop.
  13. This was done in 2005, transformed the boat - John Lidgard said "Go for it" I would say weight is little changed.
  14. Open transom should be the number one criteria (after Motor conditon, Rig condition, Hull and decks condition and performance of course). With our boat we changed it to open transom - it is the best thing we ever did. Raven 31 is quite a good boat as well.
  15. Yes just go where the Sh is. We draw 2.1m and have never touched. We have anchored where the 2.1 is north of Tokoroa island - nice spot and other times have called the harbourmaster on the VHF and arranged a mooring. Take a bit of old carpet to wrap around the mooring buoy to protect your topsides when the tide turns - only needed on some of the buoys. Rangaunu definitely worth a visit also. Good fishing all along the beach between the two harbours. One trip we went almost all the way to Awanui on a rising tide and back out again before the tide turned but it is quite a long way and
  16. Nothing major planned, around NZ again would be tempting but probably wont happen as it is a bit of a major. Also would be keen to go back gunkholing in the Kaipara as it is home waters but that may not happen either. We will likely be Houhora way in Feb or early March so may run into you. The entrance to Houhora is easy and deepish, just past the island there is a slightly shallow spot with only about 2.5m at low water but the rest of the channel is deep and well marked. I haven't been in there in a big easterly blow but I think it would be fine. There is diesel and water at the fishermans
  17. Hi Dave We spent a night in Cascade Bay on the SW side. It was the best spot in the light easterly swell at the time. There was a dive charter boat there at the same time which had been diving on the Elingamite. Also spent a couple of nights tucked into the little bay beside the island at the Eastern end of Spirits bay which is a nice spot and we have also been into Parengarenga which is magic and reasonably easy but it needs to be settled and you don't want any easterly swell. There is about 4m over the bar at LW. We also like Houhora - ask for a mooring or anchor just northeast of t
  18. General Marine Services did ours but that was with shaft removed, they had a tool for refitting also. You can use a hacksaw if you pull the shaft - just fit the hacksaw blade to the hacksaw through the hole - careful not to cut the strut !
  19. We got in the marina but that was some time ago
  20. Yes that is correct - waterblast only when repainting
  21. Probably similar formulation to Warpaint which is probably not that dissimilar to Altex No 5.
  22. We have been using Altex No 5 for a long time and before that Altex 10. The last application was 2 years ago just before we circumnavigated NZ. Since then the boat has had little use apart from one trip to North Cape in February and return to Westhaven. It has only been cleaned once in 24 months and that was a light rub by Scuba about 9 months ago, luckily not long before inspection by the BOI Harbour outfit. We have just hauled and reantifouled with Altex 5 and could possibly have got another year out of it except for the lower part of keel from pushing through mud to Warkworth. Even when we
  23. Amazing - plus that Spencer has done some mileage !
