  1. They would have to move some logs but loads of room. There is also the area near Hutchinson's boat yard which has been earmarked as a marine precinct which would be ideal. Deep water and easy access to the public.
  2. Plenty of Room at the Mt Maunganui Side of the Port.
  3. Team New Zealand Ceo in Tauranga today, apparently they are scouting alternative locations because Auckland may be to hard.
  4. I bought a 3 horse yammy 4 years ago after our 3.5 tohatsu failed, very reliable and quiet but the things is pretty gutless doesn't like revving. If I was to replace it I would look to a 3.5 merc, great little engine light and powerful. Don't like 4 strokes as they have an aversion to being stored in a locker for long periods.
  5. Ah bit of a stretch there, the course people are quite separate to the inspectors and YNZ.
  6. I see there is a VOR talk, maybe admins could move this there. Thanks
  7. Helicopter shots from after the start this morning pretty impressive.
  8. Funny I got some wet and forget as the boat decks were starting to go a bit green. The instructions said it had to dry out for 4 hours so I never got a chance to use it. Ended up just washing the decks with salt water straight from the sea. Job done.
  9. I have a simrad rudder sensor unit that we are no longer using if you want to swap it out and see if that is the fault.
  10. It does occasionally happen though. Remember the Chico that had to be abandoned after pounding to weather for a few days? Definitely best avoided. Personally I like Y11's great boats but I don't think I would take the family offshore in one.
  11. Chico 40's are very slow, but make good cruising boats. Conversely the Young 11's are a very quick boat but a bit light and bumpy offshore. Think it was about 5 years ago they did an upwind Noumea race in one and the bulkheads started cracking. I think Booboo was onboard.
  12. The Whiting looks like a nice boat for the money, you may have to drop one criteria from your list, you could probably do 2 of the 3 quite easily.

  14. Had a great weekend despite the indifferent weather.
  15. Have an external antennae on ours, worth ever penny, connects first time every time, calls are reliable and downloading weather gribs is also reliable. Used in the last RNI and didn't matter how rough or which way the boat was facing.
  16. Thought I put this up here, Fun for the racers and the cruisers. Highlights include: Motoring clause for the trip there and back to make sure you get there. On shore party with rum Race around the island on your boat or someone elses. Lots of spot prizes. Main prize is drawn so anyone who participates can win it. Awesome sailing prizes also for the racers. Beautiful Island paradise to explore.
  17. We had an inmarsat pro we bought on price was very cheap but basic. Since switched to an Iridium go for the weather forecasts. The inmarsat was a bit harder to get a fix with, the iridium with external Ariel gets an instant fix every time. Depends what you want. For all the bells and whistles the Iridium go is hard to beat. For a basic phone that will get the job done or for backup the Inmarsat is ok. PM me if you want a cheap inmarsat.
  18. Thanks Geoff. Halo did the RNI in 2011 I was there in the Cav36 got a hell of a bashing down the west coast they and many others elected not to continue after Wellington. First time I've heard of a boat needing to be hauled for a Cat 3 inspection normally only for Cat 1 or 2 the recommendations also, Whilst good seem to be more Cat 2 than 3.
  19. Update on this, spoke to the supplier of these flares this morning and the distributor has sent replacement flares down so props to them for standing behind their product.
  20. Wow obviously the skipper made a bad call, wouldn't be that easy to control. I know a few Guys who go on that boat regularly will have to ask them what happened. http://sunlive.co.nz/news/162600-bay-skipper-fined-over-waka-capsize.html
  21. Thanks Elly and Zoe, very helpfull
  22. There still seems to be a bit a FUD around cat 3. As most of the required equipment is what we should all have on board anyway I was thinking maybe there is any easier way to present the requirements rather than the YNZ book. Although very good could be a bit confusing for some. Has anyone done a simple checklist of the required equipment? Was thinking it would be a good thing for most in our area (even if not racing) to be up to spec inspection or not.
