  1. Another oldie from the '80's , Gloriana sliding on past in Russell.
  2. another one in 12, looks like I'm on Rawhiti there.
  3. To be fair Tucana ran that prop for a number of years and it was fine. But the trust had a new policy to run the boats without anodes and the shaft anode was removed, So something else got et instead, the body or boss of the propeller. I think that happened in a season or 1 1/2 seasons, my son was running the boat and I can remember pestering him to get it hauled. Anyone like to see it? I have it in the shed at home. Kiwiprops are inexpensive feathering propellers . They run smooth and you can adjust the pitch. Fine tuning the pitch to suit the powerplant and boat is invaluable I think. Yo
  4. Burnsco or General marine in AKL. Possibly a wider range at General marine, but they're next door, so you can browse.
  5. Thats just a syphon break, I had exactly the same issue myself. I tried retrofitting the valve component but couldn't get a proper seal. In the end I replaced it with a True Design composite syphon break elbow, they're rated for some crazy heat figure despite the 'plastic' look, problem solved.
  6. I'm so ^%$#@^%$ envious right now. I saw one boat up there in Fiji last year that looked relatively small, a 30 ft ( maybe a bit bigger)Hunter. When I saw the kiwi on it I asked the guy how the trip was getting there, He told me he didn't bother doing that , he just had one boat in Fiji and another one exactly the same at home.
  7. Not very sailing ( but there are sails up) I hope photobucket cooperates A favourite of mine of us coming out of the pass at Fulaga in the Lau last year.

    Teal

The Cooks and YDL have been the saviours of quite a few classic boats , Innismara ,Teal , Erewhon ( in storage). To name a few.
  9. Western red cedar is quite dangerous to humans cutting it up, full of toxins, and that makes it a great rot resistant boatbuilding timber. Same reason why Kauri is so great too. Alaskan Yellow Cedar has a good reputation too , but I don't know much about how toxic it is , or isn't.
  10. A stand out yacht last year ( cruise to Tonga and Fiji)was an older Beale of 40 or 41 ft, cedar core , relatively light weight compared to most cruisers. That boat easily nailed 180, 195 and 200 mile days.
  11. What I was told about that one was it was laid up overseas without any attention to survey requirements , layup etc. Brought here for fitout ( the complete interior and teak etc was with it) , but they discovered there was no way to get survey. No survey , no insurance = waste of time finishing. I always thought the thing should have gone off and been a house somewhere.
  12. No one remembers this and the subsequent tightening up of the regs? Anyway , just re reading what I wrote it might be seen as a criticism of the Farrs. Not intended , I like both of them , my point is simply that it might be wise to check that they pass current stabilty regs if you want to take one offshore. or , the answer might be that they get grandfathered in for cruising cat 1 because of record and history.
  13. Someone will remember the whole story , but wasn't the catalyst for righting moment specs for cat 1 being taken to another level because of a spat between the Farr Office and someone else about 8 or 10 years ago. Fingers got pointed at a race competitor and it was found that the 1104 or 38 didn't meet the specs? Giant irony at the time because the design was well accepted and well thought of for offshore. go the Davidson 35.( or 37)
  14. We had a thread on this at the time, my recollection of that thread was that the boat was new and was being trialed. .
  15. Not Lady Margaret goes through hole Coincidentally , so does Ian G
  16. With that one I'm thinking,.... three of similar age/ type. ie classics. Looking in the classics register... The early one is Colin Wild 1928 Next is the 1940 Dick Lang , more what I regard as a standard bridgedecker style That one above I don't know and haven't read the ad. looks late '50's or 60's?
  17. Naw , his is the other Lady Margaret.
  18. There is a business in gabador place just before Mc Mullen and wing that strips old paint and powder coating in preparation for new. They have a specialty in stripping alloy. Pretty good . I don't think you'll be able to get that anodised . I bet you're in for some surprises when its stripped, you can't fair with filler for powdercoating( or have any old paint left whatsoever) , but you can for paint.
  19. Clap clap clap....... thats funny.

    Bilge alarm

Talk to Steve H, he set something like that up after exactly the same thing happened. Also Burnsco had something that attached to the battery terminals, but I suspect that was just a low battery alarm.
  21. So valuable to have access to information like this . I read it in the middle of the night and need to read it again to absorb it properly , but it does strike me as the essential ocean travellers dilemma which polarises even the most experienced, whether to run off or heave to in a gale. Not easy to say which is best because different approaches will suit different boats. Was there anything else they could have done to mitigate the situation? Not intended as a criticism at all, you have to be there yourself and make your own decisions, but there's the value in this sort of thing , could t
  22. Anyone who gets to sail with these guys is in for a fun time with really great people. I'm jealous.
